Her only hopes to compete on Sunday now rest with the Pietermaritzburg High Court, where she filed an urgent application challenging the decision on Friday. Marazova says she intends to review the decision in due course. It said that her entry and race number had been withdrawn from the registration, in line with a supposed directive from World Athletics, based on Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine.

Top Comrades women's race contender dashes to court to fight race ... (TimesLIVE)

Russian athlete Alexandra Morozova - billed as a top contender for the women's race in this weekend's Comrades Marathon - might be out of the running.

She would be prejudiced because she would not be in the running for the prize money and she would not be able to fulfil her obligations to her sponsor. Race director Rowyn James was quoted as saying: “Depending on what Athletics SA says to us ... In 2017, Morozova went to court demanding the R210,000 prize she should have earned for finishing second in 2017, but ASA objected because she was part of the Russian federation that had been suspended by World Athletics. Morozova said, however, the letter from World Athletics did not reflect that — it stated it “strongly requests” events exclude Russian athletes from competing and only made a recommendation that Russian athletes likely to win prize money not be allowed to compete. On Thursday, August 25, she received a letter from the CMA advising that her entry and race number had been withdrawn because World Athletics (formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations) had given “clear and specific instructions” that Russian elite athletes, or athletes who may win prize money, are to be denied entry to any of its affiliated races. Morozova said the article mentioned her and that she had been billed as the “top contender”.

Runners gear up for 95th Comrades Marathon (Independent Online)

The organisers said even though the race took a break due to Covid-19 not much had changed and the standards were still of global level.

The 2020 and 2021 events did not take place due to the Covid-19- induced lockdown that put a halt on sporting activities. Entries comprise athletes selected from districts and school teams as well as the public. Duma said the 95th running of the “Ultimate Human Race” would bring a much-needed economic boost to the province, with accommodation occupancies reported to be peaking at 93% in Pietermaritzburg, and at 69% in Durban and uMhlanga for the weekend.

That is the extra distance in metres that runners must cover from the City Hall in Maritzburg to Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium this year as compared to back in 2016, when Gatebe slashed two and a half minutes off Leonid Shvetsov’s mark.

Marazova says she intends to review the decision in due course. “Upon reading the letter from World Athletics, however, it is clear that this is not the case. It said that her entry and race number had been withdrawn from the registration, in line with a supposed directive from World Athletics, based on Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine. She says she will suffer irreparable harm otherwise in that she won’t be able to earn the prize money she has “a reasonable expectation of winning,” nor will she be able to fulfil her obligations in terms of a sponsorship agreement that she has with athletic apparel company Asics. World Athletics does not, in fact, give ‘clear and explicit’ instructions to exclude elite Russian athletes from competing in the marathon, but rather ‘strongly requests’ that events exclude Russian authorised neutral athletes from competing, and recommends that athletes of Russian nationality - likely to win prize money - not be allowed to compete,” Morozova elaborated. In the meantime, though, she wants the Comrades Marathon Association interdicted from preventing her from competing this weekend. “The reason given for my exclusion was that World Athletics had given ‘clear and specific’ instructions that elite athletes or athletes who will win prize money, such as myself, were to be denied entry to any World Athletics affiliated races,” she said. Despite this, she says on Thursday - with just three days to go before the event - she received a letter from the Comrades Marathon Association. She also cites a post on the Comrades Marathon’s official Instagram page from earlier this month, in which she was billed as one of the top ten women competing this year. In her papers, Morozova cites an IOL article from just over a week ago in which Comrades Marathon organisers confirmed that 33 Russian runners would be competing in this year’s race - and in which Morozova was specifically mentioned by name.
