Stream It Or Skip It: 'Ludik' On Netflix, A South African Series Where ... (Decider)

Netflix's first Afrikaans-language series has a main character who is one of the most unsympathetic we've seen in some time. Is the show still watchable?

If Brown is the “big bad” of the first season, then we’re forced to root for Daan, who doesn’t seem all that easy to root for in this first episode. Most Pilot-y Line: When Brown tells Daan, “I have a problem, and I believe you’re just the man to solve it for me,” Daan replies, “What do I look like, Dr. Our Take: If you want to enjoy Ludik, you have to accept the fact that the main character, Daan Ludik, is a complete and total asshole. His mother is near death, and he turns to his older sister Linda (Leshane Van Der Bergh) as a mother figure. So it’s not hard to see how he became a middle-aged man who is more concerned with business than hurting people’s feelings. He wants to have some morning fun with his wife Anet (Diaan Lawrenson), but when she tells them that she wants to keep their son Danie ((Peter Vorster) home from school, Daan’s mood darkens and he says, “Unless he’s dead or dying, he’s going to school.”

Ludik season 1 review – a charismatic and action-filled crime drama (Ready Steady Cut)

This review of the Netflix series Ludik season 1 does not contain major spoilers or any significant plot points.

The South African series never delves into the wild and stays sensible with the concept. This series is a stakes raiser, wrapped with some formidable yet surface-level characters that keep the audience engaged. His personal and business life is at risk, and he has to use his resources, old and new allies, and personal relationships to prevent losing his family, dying, or receiving jail time. Arnold Vosloo plays an excellent, charismatic businessman that is a hard negotiator. To ensure the safety of his family member, Daan is forced to use his furniture business to transport guns into Central Africa. In this South African series, Daan Ludik (played by Arnold Vosloo) is a businessman that has come from nothing yet has managed to build an empire.

Ludik Review: A Compelling and Intriguing South African Drama (Leisurebyte)

Ludik balances the realism of what goes bump in the dark while maintaining the concepts that make each episode unpredictable.

It is a common belief that Nordic Noir is the black sheep of screenwriting. The intriguing aspect of this series is not just its story but also its characters, which are covered in such a way as to make them relatable to audiences. While the South African thriller Ludik is praised for being bold due to its characters’ unpredictable choices, several other aspects of storytelling also make the series shine. When it comes to the branding of a series, the tone must reflect one genuine voice. This no-frills series is an intriguing drama bolstered by a strong script that dishes out incredible sequences of realistic action and dramatic tension. Though its short length is a limitation, the series maintains a focused concept that doesn’t stray too far into outlandish territory.

'Ludik' Netflix Series Review – Game of Temptations | Midgard Times (Moviesr.net)

The series follows an enterprising furniture tycoon, who must use his secret diamond smuggling operation to save a kidnapped family member.

The money he collected after selling those eggs was used to buy a gold chain, which he wears to this present date. Daan Ludik is seen on most banners of the city as he is a big man who owns a furniture and carpet company. Brown discovered this fact and then forced him to transport his weapons across the border. Under his furniture and carpet business, Daan also used to deal with illegal diamonds. He knows his priority, and that is making money. The series opens with a man getting tortured as he calls for Daan Ludik in his sufferings.

Is Netflix's Ludik Based on a True Story? (The Cinemaholic)

Created by Paul Buys and Annemarie van Basten, Netflix's crime series 'Ludik' revolves around Daan Ludik, a furniture company owner who smuggles diamonds ...

As Netflix’s first Afrikaans series, ‘Ludik’ does depict an intricate fictional tale that is rooted in the reality of South Africa. Still, the show doesn’t limit its scope and appeal to South Africa. Another significant subject the show explores is firearms trafficking in Africa. The country is historically and currently known for diamond mines and has been affected by diamond smuggling for decades. Although the diamond smuggler Daan Ludik is a fictitious character, diamond smuggling isn’t fiction in South Africa. The South African series progresses through Daan’s efforts to expand his empire, the challenges he faces while doing the same, and the police investigators’ attempts to discover the truth behind his suspicious affairs.

Ludik Review: A South African Drama With a Compelling and ... (List23)

Ludik's six-episode runtime is impressive. Although its short duration is a drawback, the series maintains a focused narrative that does not go too far into ...

Ludik received not just a solid vision, but also surprising creativity in how the story was told. Sure, it has merit — excellent cinematography and solid acting with some good actors you might recognize from other Netflix series (which is not an organic form of advertising). Ludik may not be the finest streaming program on the platform. This series keeps the viewer on their toes without causing them to become frustrated. This no-frills series is an intriguing drama bolstered by a solid script that delivers astounding sequences of real-life action and dramatic tension. The tone must be consistent with one genuine voice when it comes to series branding.

Ludik Season 1 Review - A disappointingly flawed thriller (The Review Geek)

Despite a simple and enjoyable revenge thriller plot, this South African thriller crumbles when it comes to the characters, and, in particular, its titular ...

The story isn’t too bad but a slow pace and a terribly unlikable protagonist make this far less appealing than it should be. It doesn’t help that the sound design is uninspired on the whole, and the characters cliched and very tropey. All of this leads to a bombastic final episode that resolves most of the big plot points but does also leave things wide open after a big discovery at the end. With 6 episodes clocking in at a little under an hour, Ludik has plenty of time to play with but the pacing is really quite poor. In fact, Daan doesn’t really have much of a character journey beyond “don’t get caught”, making for a rather tepid and forgettable journey. One of the most important parts of any show is a likable protagonist.

Ludik Ending, Explained: Who Seizes the Guns? Are Charles and ... (The Cinemaholic)

Swanepoel makes her understand that she is not at all happy with her husband, which can be the guiding light that will motivate her to leave Daan to be with the psychiatrist. In addition, Daan starts to lie to his wife about the illegal affairs he has been a part of. The lack of physical evidence against him also indicates that Davies may not be able to arrest Daan right away. He may think that Arend is the one involved with the diamond smuggling and not Daan, as the latter wanted to establish using Bells. If that’s the case, Daan may escape from Davies and avoids an arrest. Since the non-existing person who oversees the diamond mine in Limpopo is an associate of Arend, Davies may fall into Daan’s trap and believe that Arend is involved in the smuggling and he had been using Daan’s trucks to smuggle the diamonds by threatening the latter. Albert Nkala, a Zimbabwean gangster, meets Daan about the missing guns, only for the latter to promise that he will find and deliver the guns. The Zimbabwean gangster can be behind the group to send a message to Daan. Daan gives Bells a pouch of diamonds to plant at Arend’s house to divert the brigadier to him. Both Arend and Daan tell her that Nick is dead but Rina doesn’t accept the same since they haven’t found his dead body. Daan strikes a deal with Arend’s right-hand man Bells by promising him an opportunity to run the firearms trafficking on his behalf when he establishes himself in the trade, overthrowing Arend. Daan’s life changes when Arend Brown, a firearms trafficker kidnaps the former’s brother-in-law to force him to smuggle guns.

'Ludik' Ending, Explained: Why Did Swys Kill Arend? How Did Daan ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

"Ludik" revolves around Daan Ludik, a man who started his furniture business from scratch and has become a famous figure in South Africa.

Daan’s plan was for Bells to take the gun shipment that Arend wanted him to transport and then return to him, and he would help Bells stay in hiding. Farhad sent his man to murder Daan and his family, but Daan managed to tackle the threat. Arend tipped the sergeant, confirming that Daan Ludik was not as simple and truthful as he seemed to be. The police now started doubting that it was Arend who was involved in the entire diamond smuggling case and Daan was just the medium. Bells lied to Swys about Arend’s location, and he left to kill the man. DJ Jakes was admitted to the hospital, and he refused to continue his relationship with Heins. His delay in delivering the remaining promised quantity of diamonds to Farhad made him furious, and he demanded to know the reason behind the delay. Now that Daan and Bells were working together, Bells exposed the rat who lived with Daan and passed information about him to Arend. He was in a relationship with DJ Jakes and had plans to run away from the country with him. The sudden chaos was affecting his diamond smuggling business, and he asked his associate, Lil, to deliver half of the diamond to his client, Farhad. After being kidnapped, he was determined to find the ones who were responsible for it and seek revenge on behalf of Daan. Charles got off the truck and attempted to escape, but he was shot, and he fell into the river.
