Me Time features fun chemistry between Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg but is held back by a worn-out story.

The promise/premise of the movie is these two and their scenes get held back to an odd degree. The most underdeveloped of the three, actually, is Wahlberg's Huck, whose man-child catharsis at the end happens too speedily as the movie tidily figures out that everyone can have everything they want in terms of family and career. What works best are some of the actual lines and exchanges that capitalize on Hart and Wahlberg's fast-talking chemistry. In the case of Me Time, the reason Hart's Sonny is friendless, or at least hasn't really connected with his childhood friend Huck Dembo (Wahlberg, with a superb doltish movie name) in over a decade, is because he's rigidly dedicated himself to being a househusband and helicopter father after starting his own family. It's a different type of self-dug hole in that regard as the film, clumsily for the most part, addressees the issue of giving away too much of yourself for fear that you have no value outside of acts of service. Yang comes after Huck for $47,000, it seems like a lot but also isn’t enough for someone who spends thousands of dollars on a private raw bar in the desert and a tour bus wrapped in pictures of himself. It is personable, a little ambitious, and only intended to serve as background. Hall undoubtedly deserved more, and Maya is only one of the many poorly developed characters at play here. The wealth on display in “Me Time” is downright distracting. He treats his job extremely seriously, cooking meals fit for an Instagram celebrity and taking care of the house while his wife Maya played by Regina Hall is at work. However, given who was there, it ought to be much better.

Our Take: As ever, Hart is the great leveler, giving an enjoyable performance within the confines of a lackluster screenplay, resulting in a middling shrug of a comedy that inspires a few smirks before it ends and we never watch it again. Even Maya thinks Sonny should enjoy some time to himself, so she throws the kids on a plane to her parents’ house and he gets out the lotion and porn and you know how this scene ends – no, not the logical conclusion of such things, but like you’d get in a predictable broad R-rated comedy. Hart and Wahlberg indulge the boring guy/crazy guy dynamic and share two sentimental moments accompanied by delicately tinkled piano music. Oh, and Huck Dembo should’ve been named something else. Performance Worth Watching: And as always, Hart is the best thing about these romps. He makes the perfect school lunches, gets the kids and wife out the door and only manages to slip twice in shit left on the kitchen floor by their pet tortoise. He brings uptempo energy and an unerringly relatable, sympathetic component to these boilerplate roles. He looks across the school dropoff zone and wonders if he’s becoming poor sad lonely Crossing Guard Lenore.
