At the time, a spokesman for the prison services said although Pistorius met with Ms Steenkamp's father he will continue to serve his sentence as normal, and that participating in the victim-offender dialogue process does not equate to the end of a sentence or automatic parole. The South African athlete, nicknamed Blade Runner after his racing prosthetics, will argue he has already served more than half of his sentence - enough to be eligible for parole.

“The Steenkamp family is not opposing parole. They, however, did not hear from the Supreme Court during this time. Tania Koen, the lawyer representing the Steenkamp family, meanwhile, said while they did not want to comment on the issue, they shared the department’s viewpoint that he could not yet be considered for parole as they believed that he had not yet served half of his prison time. But the Supreme Court again amended his sentence and ruled that the 13 years and five month sentence should be antedated to the date in 2014 when he was initially sentenced by Judge Masipa. According to the calculations of Pistorius and his lawyer, Julian Knight, he has served half of the 15 years meted out to him by the Supreme Court of Appeal and, thus, is entitled to be considered for parole. The confusion regarding his time spent in jail followed the various appeals and orders issued by the Supreme Court after trial Judge Thokozile Masipa of the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, sentenced him to six years in prison in October 2014.

Barry ultimately met with Oscar on 22 June 2022 for the Victim Offender Dialogue. In 2017, his sentence for the murder of Steenkamp was increased from six years to 13 years and five months. There is a dispute about when his sentence started as he was initially sentenced to six years in 2015, only for this to be extended to 13 years in 2017. Pistorius is serving a 13-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkemp in 2013. The former athlete has argued that he has already served more than half his sentence and is therefore eligible for parole. South African former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius is going to court to try and argue he is eligible for parole.
