DStv Premiership Report: Maritzburg United v Orlando Pirates 04 ... (Soccer Laduma)

Orlando Pirates missed the chance to move top of the DStv Premiership table after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Maritzburg United on Sunday evening.

Soukouna made no mistake from the spot-kick to give his side the lead with a thumping strike. There was ten minutes of added time in the first stanza after the floodlight incident and John Maduka's charges came to life, as Amadou Soukouna came close to breaking the deadlock with a low drive that forced a fine save out of shot-stopper Richard Ofori just before the interval. With the Team of Choice absorbing the pressure, the game was temporarily suspended on 19 minutes due to a floodlight failure but play resumed after ten minutes.

Orlando Pirates will be looking to reclaim the PSL top spot when they clash with Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday.

They have been successful in their trips to KwaZulu-Natal so far and they hope to get it right against Maritzburg who have won one of their three games at home. Having shared the spoils away at Stellenbosch as well as in Tshwane against SuperSport, the Buccaneers have twice beaten Royal AM in the league and MTN8 at Chatsworth. They face Maritzburg who have been struggling in this campaign and have just one win in six outings.

Soukouna stepped up and slotted past the fingertips of Ofori, who dived the right way to his right. In the 65th substitute Zakhele Lepasa took the ball off Given Mashikinya in Unitedโ€™s half on the right and set off on a dazzling run, toe-poking-past and rounding centreback Bonginkosi Makume but shaping his attempt at a finish past the right upright. Deep in the 10 minutes of first-half added time a ball over the top landed on Soukouna to take down and find space, under the attention of Olisah Ndah, to squeeze a low strike that was stopped by a diving Ofori.

Late penalty sees Maritzburg United beat Orlando Pirates (Independent Online)

Amadou Soukouna converted a late penalty as Maritzburg United beat Orlando Pirates in their Premiership clash in the KwaZulu-Natal capital on Sunday.

After scoring two goals in their 2-1 win over Royal AM in the MTN8 quarter-final a week ago, Pirates were expected to build on that victory. But as the game started to gain momentum, through duels in midfield, there was a 10-minute break due to a floodlights failure in the first half. Maritzburg werenโ€™t prepared to be bullied around though, taking the game to Pirates as they used the pace of Bongani Sam on the left flank.
