Bagnaia extends MotoGP winning streak (The South African)

Italy's Francesco Bagnaia closed the gap on MotoGP leader Fabio Quartararo on Sunday after winning the San Marino Grand Prix.

I’m very happy to win today, it wasn’t the best start from P5 but I did it.” Foggia is the first rider to complete the Moto3 hat-trick at the track and is 24 points behind Guevara’s fellow Aspar rider Sergio Garcia, who dropped down to second in the standings after being disqualified from the race for irresponsible riding. Bagnaia’s teammate Jack Miller had started on pole for the second time in his MotoGP career but was one of five riders to crash in a chaotic opening to the race. The 24-year-old, who had started second on the grid, pushed past Vinales and behind Bagnaia on lap 20 and then piled the pressure on his compatriot. After taking the lead on lap three Bagnaia held off first Maverick Vinales and then Bastianini to claim his sixth win from the 14 GPs completed in the 20-race season. Ducati Lenovo’s Italian rider Francesco Bagnaia competes during the San Marino MotoGP race.

Guevara tried one move to take over and got shuffled back to fourth, with he and Öncü then hustling to find a way past on the penultimate lap. Then there was a gap back to another group headed by former Misano winner Tatsuki Suzuki (Leopard Racing) and Öncü, with ninth place marking the beginning of another freight train. It was soon a full second, as Vietti re-passed Canet at Tramonto on Lap 8 and then Canet returned the favour at Rio on Lap 9. Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing) put in another stunner at Misano, the Italian taking his third win at the track and becoming the first Moto3™ rider to achieve the feat at one venue. Up at the front though, Lopez was putting the hammer down and setting a new personal best as he moved his advantage over then second-placed Arenas to 1.2 seconds. Fernandez put a move on Aldeguer through the quick Turn 15 on Lap 2 and set about trying to catch the top five before Canet passed Vietti at his second attempt and was into third on Lap 6. and a huge heap of memories from one of the biggest protagonists of the last decade of MotoGP™. Searching for a passing manoeuvre, Bastianini was late on the brakes at Turn 4 and he was out of shape, narrowly avoiding contact and disaster between the two. A great race because I struggled at the start because the grip was not so high, so I was struggling a bit to find some grip, some traction. The Frenchman gapped the Aprilia by 0.7s but it was then the Noale factory rider who set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 9, with the top six – down to the number 41 – split by 2.2s. The Beast was straight back past though on the run into the rapid Turn 11 right-hander though, and in good time as Bagnaia and Viñales started to turn up the wick. Further back, the top two in the World Championship at the time – Quartararo and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) – were locked together in P5 and P6.

Dovizioso came up short - but he made Marquez and MotoGP better ... (The Race)

History will paint Andrea Dovizioso as less of a MotoGP 'alien' than Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo or Dani Pedrosa. Yet the Marquez era is also the Dovi era, ...

He won and lost, he took one of the greatest ever into the final round of their bout, and then kept fighting once his rival ascended to a ludicrous level. It is cliche – but perhaps not inaccurate – to say that the thing that stood out, and continues to stand out, about Dovizioso was how normal he was. But a “less thoughtful” version of Dovi may not have won the 15 races. Dovizioso joined MotoGP as a star of the lower classes, but when it comes to his premier-class tenure that’s a footnote. At Mugello he came off worse than Marquez did in a last-lap three-rider battle won by Dovizioso’s team-mate, the over-exuberant and (understandably) aggressive Danilo Petrucci. He may well do it, because he has been pretty good in many a glimpse even after the injury.

Bagnaia vs Bastianini: 0.034s decides Misano epic (motogp.com)

Pecco becomes the first Ducati rider to win four on the spin as the victory battle goes to the wire between the Italians.

Raul Fernandez (Tech3 KTM Factory Racing), Stefan Bradl (Repsol Honda Team) and Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) rounded out the points. Bastianini regrouped and by the time Turn 10 came around, the gap was back to nothing. Further back, the top two in the World Championship – Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) – were locked together in P5 and P6. The Beast was straight back past though on the run into the rapid Turn 11 right-hander as Bagnaia and Viñales started to turn up the wick. One thing to note and to keep an eye on was a couple of track limits warnings for Viñales and Quartararo – caution for the pair was needed with 12 laps to go. No pass came into Turn 14 and neither into the final corner, but Bastianini hooked his GP21 up on the exit and threatened to snatch victory away from Pecco’s grasp at the chequered flag. The Frenchman gapped Espargaro by 0.7s but it was then the Aprilia star who set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 9, with the top six – down to the number 41 – split by 2.2s. Searching for a passing manoeuvre, Bastianini was late on the brakes at Turn 4 and he was out of shape, narrowly avoiding contact. The Australian slipped out at Turn 4 and a few corners later at Turn 10, Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) was on the floor. From pole, Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) got away fantastically and so did teammate Francesco Bagnaia, as the Italian pounced straight up to third. Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) faded late on but held on to claim another hard-earned podium. New race leader Bastianini then had a hairy moment at Turn 14 as the hottest weather of the weekend was making life tricky for the premier class.

TALKING POINTS – Misano: "It was chaos" (motogp.com)

Comebacks, farewells and opening corner mayhem. Catch up on some hot topics from a busy weekend at the San Marino GP.

"I thought my left boot (made contact), I think it might have touched his wing or something because I felt like a pull on the top of my boot. "In the past when I finished sixth, we had a party in Aprilia! It's going to be a really nice last part of the Championship." I made a big, big, big effort, super focused, working and giving my best and I finished sixth in both races. "We have a lot of confidence and I want to say really thank you to Aprilia because in the worst moment of my career, they took me up. I said from the beginning of the year that Austria, Misano and America will be very tough races. And they give me that extra motivation that of course, I will improve a lot myself." “I hope he can be fighting with us pretty soon and try to destroy a little bit, the plan of the red bikes. It’s been quite the redemption story for Maverick Viñales, and fitting that he took a podium at Misano 12 months on from his first point-scoring finish with the Noale factory. I mean when I will come back it's because the intention is race all races." He is a bit old, but just in the numbers. "When I will return, it's because I want to race all races.
