Which has the better dragons? Which has the better swords? Now that we've seen a few episodes of each, here's an early comparison.
Also, the “House of the Dragon” writers seem much more aware of how to use lines and scenes to stir watercooler discussion and to crank up the old “Thrones” meme factory again. But “Rings of Power” squanders that advantage by barely using Quenya when the elves speak to one another, or Khuzdul among the dwarves, at least in the first two episodes. One on one, they have serious intellectual assets; but as a group, their meager numbers in Middle-earth during this Second Age are no match for the fire-breathing horde in “House of the Dragon.” In the beginning — in “The Rings of Power,” at least — there were the Two Trees of Valinor, growing side by side in a mingled glow, until the Dark Lord Morgoth poisoned them. And they’ll have a more serious role to play in the story once the dwarves get their power jewelry. Dragons are the ultimate weapons of war. We have also learned that a gift of a sapling continues to blossom even in the deep underground of Khazad-dûm. But it’s still early, fan reaction to the end of “Thrones” was truly bitter, and the franchise still has a lot of ground to make up. Instead, “Dragon” implicitly asks viewers to identify Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) with Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and therefore support her claim for the throne. It could be said that the early seasons of “Game of Thrones” were in some ways comparable to the first three (and much-loved) Jackson films, while the derided later seasons of “Thrones” resembled more the polarizing “Hobbit” movies. King Viserys (Paddy Considine) grips the mighty sword of kings, Blackfyre, when he wants to exert authority, and he holds Morfydd Clark, as an adventurous young Galadriel in “Rings” (played by Cate Blanchett in the movies) manages this quite nicely.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is getting slammed essentially everywhere that accepts fan reviews: On Rotten Tomatoes, while its critics score is 84% ...
We’ll see how things play as more episodes air and fans may warm up to the concept in time. Though again, even though House of the Dragon has faced similar issues, much of this seems to be coming from the century-old roots of the Tokien fanbase, whereas fewer people are complaining about House of the Dragon’s adaptation of George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood. Again, Amazon owns IMDB, but they do not appear to be fiddling with the score too much there, if at all. I have also noticed that while Amazon is still not listing the show’s “star review” on Amazon Prime, which was the genesis for this article, they are still showing the IMDB score in some listings. But if you’re seeing these scores and questioning the quality of the show, I’d…take into consideration who is submitting these reviews and why, and make up your own mind once you see it. This does seem to be at a level that House of Dragon managed to avoid, even as it faced similar controversies (cast members faced racist abuse for playing black nobles on that show). - Then just…take your pick of any number of things that die-hard Tolkien devotees see as the show departing from the source material, or skipping over parts that should have been adapted instead. Complaints are that this clashes with Tolkien’s original work and has led to debates about “whether dwarves can be black because they live underground.” In general, the show has let its female characters slay out, including both Bronwyn and Galadriel. But Rings of Power has zero reviews listed because Amazon didn’t want to be broadcasting its premiere with a low score right next to it, no doubt. Unlike its rival House of the Dragon, Rings of Power has become the latest front in the review bombing wars, the most recent since uh, She-Hulk. Amazon is not amused about the fanboy wars that have surrounded its billion dollar Lord of the Rings series, Rings of Power.

Elon Musk's verdict on Amazon's massive budget drama series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? “Tolkien is turning in his grave”.
The series is set thousands of years before the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit stories and features a much younger Galadriel, which in theory provides context on the differences. Powerful elven warriors setting off on epic quests of revenge. Bustling dwarven cities hewn into stone. Diminutive halflings—called Harfoots—hiding from the ...
As I noted in my spoiler-free review, I thought this was a brilliant start to The Rings Of Power. So Arondir and Bronwyn set out to find the cause of the strange illness and eventually come to a village in ruins, great rifts in the earth cleaving the town, its buildings afire. Later, we see a ship pull up alongside the raft and see the silhouette of a mysterious figure looking down on them. The orc is an astonishing creation, at once terrifying (especially for what we know of as kind of the canon fodder of Middle-earth) and beautifully—hideously—crafted. Later, when a drop of his blood touches the blade, we see it smoke and flame and begin to grow. He and Celebrimbor pay the dwarves of Khazad-dûm a visit, hoping to enlist the master-craftsmen’s help in the forge’s building. I believe that Gandalf—perhaps called Olórin or even some other name in The Rings Of Power—will help guide the Harfoots to safety, and that this early encounter with the little people will be the very reason that thousands of years later he continues to visit the Shire and befriend the small folk who live there. Disa also explains her own craft, a sort of divining for where to carve into the stone—and where not to. The Harfoot protagonist is a youth called Nori (Markella Kavenagh) who dreams of adventure and lives by her own rules. In these opening hours we learn about his long friendship with Galadriel, his usefulness to the High King and get a glimpse at the prejudice he faces as a half-elf, snubbed by the pure-blood elven lords. But this is a Galadriel very different from the one we met in Lord Of The Rings played wonderfully by Cate Blanchett as an austere and ancient queen among elves. Elrond is the other main elven character in The Rings Of Power and he, too, is strikingly different than the half-elven lord he becomes by the time Frodo and his companions meet him for the first time in Rivendell.

The original books were also imagined around English landscapes, and filming in the Uk could maintain an authenticity of the country's climate and aesthetic. Where is The Rings of Power filmed? The Rings of Power was filmed between February 2020 and August 2021. Middle-earth is equivalent to the Miðgarðr of Norse mythology, or Middangeard in Old English. It also featured in Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, when Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are attempting to enter Mordor. The Denize Bluffs are situated at the edge of a family farm in the Mangaotaki Valley near Piopio, in the Waikato region of New Zealand. And if he does, the showrunners may end up (humorously) ignoring just a few as they go about their business. And so far, it would seem that the former company president and the writing staff heeded the warning. (I mean, he’s only the richest man in the world and one of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry after all.) Based on what Bezos says, the process wasn’t all that bad on his side of things – even when the writers didn’t listen to him: But in regard to the show, his sentiments would seem to suggest that he and the creative team forged a solid working relationship. However, given the response to the show thus far, I’d wager that Bezos won’t shell out quite as many moving forward. Most Hollywood creatives seem to wince at the mere thought of having to receive notes from the powers that be. That these big, big projects that are getting media coverage like this is the way to cut through the clutter of the streaming wars." "Streamers have a monopoly on the audience now because people don't need to leave their homes." if anything, everybody else is learning from HBO Max's experience with Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, that this is the way to go. Matthew Belloni, former editor of The Hollywood Reporter and founding partner of media news outlet Puck, says that's driving studios and streamers to spend big on tentpole series. That project, from Captain America and Avengers directors the Russo Brothers, has a budget that's reportedly ballooning to over $200 million for just seven episodes — the second-most expensive show ever made, [according to The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/russo-bros-amazon-series-citadel-1235210256/). And for Amazon particularly, Belloni said, actually making money on Rings of Power or any other series is mostly an afterthought. That, Landau said, has come from the move from network and cable TV to streamers — who don't require ad breaks or strict time blocks that often led to necessarily formulaic stories. Vast, serialized and cinematic shows are becoming the norm for production companies and show writers, who are starting to see television as an entirely new genre. The appendices are additional information Tolkien included at the end of his books, and because of that Amazon does not even have the ability to include information from the books' main story or its prequels like The Hobbit. For a streaming show, this is as good as it gets, and the stunning 4K is going to be a joy to watch every week, no matter the setting. The story is first introduced through Galadriel, who we see first as a small child and next leading a group of elves through snowy conditions to try and track down Sauron and his forces. After viewing these episodes, I made the mistake of going on social media to see what others thought of the show, and that was a big mistake. Not everything is going to be word for word what is on the page. And let's be clear about something: none of the problems with the show are the ones that most people are complaining about. This is far and away one of the most beautiful to look at shows that we have ever seen, and though that masks some of the other problems, nothing here is a dealbreaker.

Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is an unmatched feat of genre movie-making.
In Return of the King Frodo also "dies" after Shelob paralyses him and in the Extended Edition, time is wasted by the Mouth of Sauron trying to convince Aragorn and co. The “end” of the movie lasts over thirty minutes and the most egregious part about them is the constant fade-outs. Another popular grievance with Return of the King aside from the Eagles is how long the movie takes to end. One of the most glaring departures from the books, in the adaptation of The Two Towers, the writers decided to include a battalion of Elves (originally including Arwen herself) arriving to help bolster Theoden’s (Bernard Hill) vastly outnumbered forces. Aside from them not being there in the books, because Elves were, at that point, set in their choice to leave Middle-Earth, not a single Elf seems to survive the battle. Thematically, giving Aragorn a chance to contend with the troubled past of Isildur before taking the throne is a great idea. Without explanation in the films, the Eagles come across as a massive Deus ex Machina that only arrive to fly characters out of danger. In the grand scheme of love triangles, this one is done exceptionally well. Regardless of the exposition given in the books, if explanations don’t translate to script and screen, the explanation doesn’t matter. He also single-handedly takes out an Oliphaunt with gravity-defying acrobatics and manages to mount a horse in the most ridiculous manner possible. Some reviews have claimed that the series is unfaithful to the OG series, particularly when it comes to its depiction of certain characters (some of which are presented as people of color).
