Guenther Steiner: Mick Schumacher still on the table for 2023 Haas ... (PlanetF1)

As rumours swirl about the future of Mick Schumacher, Guenther Steiner has said the German driver is still a possibility to continue at Haas.

We just want to try to make the best decision for the team’s future. That’s the aim, that’s what we need to do.” We want to take the time we have available to try to get the best decision. But we need consistency as well and we need to see also how we can take the team forward. We don’t want to stay with the status quo. So in the end, we just go through the motions and we want to wait a few more races.

A reminder of Schumacher's F1 merit amid fading 2023 hopes - The ... (The Race)

Mick Schumacher could be a casualty of Formula 1's highly-volatile 2023 silly season - and that's a shame based on his recent performances.

“Today it probably cost us a few points, which is frustrating cause I think we had a decent car, decent enough to be in the top 10. He crossed the line 14th and was promoted to 13th by a five-second penalty for Sebastian Vettel. But a slow jack release in the pitstop meant he didn’t even have a chance to try. On the other hand, we had quite a bit of deg on the medium, so I think the softs would’ve been just worse.” France, Hungary and Belgium passed without either Schumacher or Kevin Magnussen having a sniff at points, and in that time Haas introduced a major new upgrade. But whatever the reasons for Haas not being convinced, Schumacher does have merit as a candidate.

Actually, Williams are still an option, and they could well be the best of the lot. If Schumacher was to develop with a team like Williams, then a pairing of Mick and George Russell may yield the next generation of silver success. It is undeniable that the Schumacher name carries a lot of positive weight, and the team could possibly be keen to evaluate Mick as a long-term successor to Sir Lewis Hamilton, the man who replaced Michael. The Dutchman is currently under contract with Mercedes as their Reserve Driver and also won the Formula E World Championship with the Silver Arrows in 2021. As an American, Sargeant’s inclusion would please the suits in charge of F1 with their wish to appeal to the US market. Haas boss Guenther Steiner has been coy on rumors that Schumacher will be leaving the Kannapolis, NC outfit, with Schumacher apparently choosing not to renew his contract with Ferrari, who supply power units to Haas.
