The present church, started by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, with the medieval shrine of Anglo-Saxon saint Edward the Confessor still at its heart. The Queen Mother's funeral was held at the Abbey in 2002, five years after Diana's. The Queen's was the 38th. Then on Monday, the coffin will be moved from the Houses of Parliament that morning on the state gun carriage and transported to the neighbouring Abbey. It was a morale booster in tough post-war years and millions of people listened on the radio. An estimated 27 million people in Britain watched the ceremony on TV after the Queen agreed it could be televised. Some 16 months later, on June 2 1953, she was crowned at the Abbey - the scene of coronations for some 900 years. The funeral of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Philip's uncle, was also held there in 1979. The last was George II's in 1760. It will then close at 8.30am in preparation for the procession. The military will also join the procession. Her coffin will be flown to London on Tuesday, acccompanied by the Princess Royal, before being driven to Buckingham Palace.

The queen will be buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel alongside her parents, George VI and Queen Elizabeth, known as the queen mother. It was from there that her coffin was carried on Sunday morning to a waiting hearse by the estate’s gamekeepers at the start of the procession. Much of the current grief for the queen “is a reflection of her particular contribution to the nation and longevity of her reign,” said Professor Edgerton, the historian. “The relationship between Scotland and the queen was one of shared admiration,” said Ian Blackford, the leader of the S.N.P. The queen’s death in Scotland, at her home in Balmoral, underscored her close ties to the country, which for two days will be the center of national mourning. The accession of King Charles III comes at a time of renewed mobilization for Scottish independence, complicating the approach for those who want to break away. Hoyle said, to take note of revolutions in a formal statement to the monarch. There were expressions of fealty from Parliament to the king and a reciprocal pledge by him to abide by the limits of his constitutional role, which stipulates that he remain above politics.

Why Is Queen Elizabeth II Going To Be Buried In A Lead-Lined Coffin? (IFLScience)

All Royals are, but it has nothing to do with ensuring Henry VIII doesn't rise from the dead in search of a future ex-wife.

By the day of the funeral, it was too bloated to fit into the sarcophagus. The tradition dates from a time when modern methods of preservation were not yet available – using formaldehyde to preserve bodies was not discovered [until 1869](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3931544/). Lead does not decay and so remains airtight, preventing decomposition, but also any smells and gases from being released; not something you want if multiple Royals are sharing a vault or may be moved in the future. As he slowly died, the people in his life – most of whom he had not treated well, including his son, who he was at actual war with – decided not to take on the matter of arranging his funeral. The king, no longer occupied with matters of rule, now wiled away the hours by It probably hasn't escaped your attention that Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has died.
