Salzburg Sporting Director Christoph Freund Hints At Chelsea Switch (Sports Illustrated)

The RB Salzburg director has been linked with a move to West London as Todd Boehly searches for his man.

But you do that again and again with other clubs – that's it. "You should never rule anything out in football and Chelsea are such a huge club. "Chelsea is a huge club in transition. But I'm sports director in Salzburg and I really enjoy it." "The new owners are interested in how we do it with young players, how we integrate them into the first team. But the next piece on the agenda is bringing in a sporting director who fits Boehly's vision in the same way Graham Potter had.

Todd Boehly's true Chelsea vision made clear following Graham ... (Football.London)

A lot of change has taken place at Chelsea in the last few months and there is more to come.

The prospect of American influence entering the Premier League has seen much criticism levelled at Boehly, characterising him as someone who has not been in the country long and is looking to change the footballing pyramid. Bath was able to present the project to the new owners in a series of meetings, and has since worked closely with Boehly. The new owners are interested in how we do it with young players, how we integrate them into the first team. A potential candidate was in attendance at Stamford Bridge, albeit due to his role with the opposition. Nobody is more synonymous with the Cobham-based academy than Neil Bath, Chelsea's Head of Youth Development, and he appears to have been backed to the hilt. Christoph Freund has already worked within a multi-club structure at Red Bull Salzburg and seen young forwards Erling Haaland and Benjamin Sesko come through the club. Even with this cohesiveness and the arrival of Graham Potter, Chelsea's structure is not yet complete. And for me, the way to do that is through another club in a really competitive league in Europe.” This has already seen the club target non-league more effectively - Mason Burstow spent time on trial while playing for Maidstone United - while this summer has seen players arrive from Southampton, Brighton and Arsenal. [been at the forefront of the mind's of Chelsea's hierarchy](https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/chelsea-todd-boehly-levi-colwill-24201411). Immediate success is wanted but perhaps not required, with process and integrated communication seen as key to moving the club forwards. I would love to continue to build out the footprint.

That Boehly could think such a scheme was worth mentioning reveals that he sees the game as being primarily about individuals, which perhaps explains why he was so keen to sign Cristiano Ronaldo (and Anthony Gordon and Roméo Lavia) even when they would have been such a poor fit for Tuchel’s system. But what is probably of greater to concern to Potter is what it says about how Boehly regards football and how little he understands it. It’s impractical to the point of unworkability, and the idea that it could generate $200 million for the pyramid laughable (there actually has been a one-off showpiece friendly in English football to raise revenue for charity since 1908, the Community Shield, which is tolerated rather than loved. That’s why international football looks so different to club football; national managers simply don’t have the time to drill their players in complex systems of pressing or sophisticated attacking patterns that we’re used to seeing at the club level. Rafael Leao's stance on joining Chelsea after AC Milan make ... (Daily Express)

RAFAEL LEAO has been linked with a potential move to Chelsea over the last few months.

The Italian giants made it clear to Chelsea over the summer that Leao would not be allowed to leave at a reduced price and they are not expected to alter their stance before the transfer window reopens in January. "In the summer, Chelsea sent us an offer, albeit unwritten, for Leao and we turned it down. Milan will also need to pay the remaining compensation which has come about due to Leao's ongoing legal case with former club Sporting, with the player having terminated his deal with the Portuguese outfit back in 2018 after an incident at the training ground involving an attack from ultras. Talks are currently progressing well but there is still believed to be a gap between Milan's offer and the player's demands, with his agent Jorge Mendes having requested a £6m signing-on fee to seal the deal. Chelsea eventually backed off after it became clear that Leao would not be allowed to leave for less than the value of his release clause, which reportedly stands at around £130million. The Blues were said to have identified Leao as a target over the summer after he helped Milan to win last season's Serie A title with an impressive tally of 11 league goals.

In the case of Koulibaly and Fofana, it is just one game though. How Sterling was used allowed him to get on the ball on a number of occasions and drive at his defender, especially in the first half. Potter cut a much calmer, understated and measured figure on the sidelines. We changed a couple of things in the line-up and the structure. The Stamford Bridge press box is a prime viewing spot for some manager watching and Potter carries himself very differently to Tuchel. Aubameyang said: 'He [Potter] is a really positive person and a great character. Potter was happy to make full use of the five subs too. There were times when one wrong move could have left them, and Silva in particular, exposed but for most of the game they avoided trouble. Aubameyang said: 'His ideas are very clear so I think it's going to be easy. 'So we have to adjust to that. Less pedestrian, less sideways passing, more proactive, speed, intensity and forward passing. But we saw positive things.

The level that Sterling has now reached is shown by a remarkable stat following his strike at Stamford Bridge against Salzburg. As a player with, so far, immense longevity - 326 Premier League appearances in 11 years - Sterling has gone on to put up numbers that are in the conversation alongside true greats of the game. Thomas Tuchel may have been a key advocate for Sterling, but just like the other new signings, Todd Boehly gave the green light and backed the 27-year-old to thrive over a five-year deal.

Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang decision is ideal ... (Football.London)

Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are both going on international duty next week and that could be good news for Graham Potter and Chelsea.

As frustrating as international breaks are for the die-hard club supporters, this one really could be beneficial to Chelsea and Potter. With Loftus-Cheek staying at Cobham, too, it could be an opportunity to use the English pair together in the centre of midfield. Common sense would suggest he will be used on the right-hand side of a back trio, but his ability to play in the middle as well begs a different question. Potter's task is to try and find a way he can be found by his team-mates and how Chelsea can properly utilise his talents. Over the next two weeks, Potter will be working intensely with Fofana and the other squad members, where he can really get a feel of their strengths and weaknesses. He was used in the double pivot when Thomas Tuchel was in charge, something that really didn't suit the Cobham graduate. It will be a big period for Fofana, who will look to win over Potter at Cobham. For these players, they will get to work even closer with Potter and his backroom staff at Cobham while the others are around the world. The 21-year-old central defender has been impressive in his four appearances for Chelsea so far. Next week, the majority of the Chelsea squad will jet off to represent their respective countries in the last international break before this year's FIFA World Cup. Aubameyang announced in May that he will retire from international football with Gabon. Despite six days seeming like a while, it would not have felt like that for Potter.

Todd Boehly All-Star outrage exposes Premier League hypocrisy as ... (Football.London)

The overblown outrage to a mere suggestion was the least interesting part of Todd Boehly's interview.

He spoke about the expertise he wants to put in place at the club, the importance of the academy and the potential for owning multiple clubs, albeit a controversial topic. Boehly merely suggesting the idea of a hypothetical game that likely will never happen, is at worst misguided. Whether you think the 'All-star' format is a woeful idea is kind of not the point. Particularly when you realise that out of everything Boehly said, that suggestion was actually the least substantive point. How about the UEFA Nations League, still being played in a ridiculously congested year where a winter World Cup is the sandwich filling in between two slices of domestic football. Chelsea's transfer business was perceived to be the brainchild of Boehly, arriving and going mad like 'a kid in a sweet shop' as one report described. That picture of humour at the expense of an outsider feels pretty representative of some of the responses to The reaction that an all-star game would undermine the integrity of the entire sport is pretty funny, because of course, we currently have no games on the current calendar that lack significance of competitive integrity. Or the out-of-touch outsider, who doesn't "get it" or can be mocked for his accent and attempted Americanization of the sport. "It feels like you are standing in front of all the coolest kids in school" Ker explains in a voiceover. You could do a North vs South all-star game from the Premier League to fund the pyramid very easily." [Gary Neville](https://www.football.london/all-about/gary-neville) referred to his actions as interim sporting director over the summer, a line that has tediously stuck.

Report: Chelsea Eying Purchase Of A Brazilian Club (Sports Illustrated)

Recent reports have discussed the desire of owner Todd Boehly to turn Chelsea into a multi-club model and they are now looking into options in Brazil.

Owning clubs in multiple countries will allow Chelsea to take their pick of many talented players as well as provide them with the opportunity of loaning their own youth players to multiple different leagues. This shift in focus will signal the end of the 'loan army' that fans have become accustomed to under previous owner Roman Abramovich. It seems that new owner Todd Boehly is determined to completely reshape the look of Chelsea Football Club. Following the rejection of Santos, the Blues will reportedly reach out to smaller clubs in Brazil in the hopes of enticing one. He is seemingly interested in creating a model similar to the Red Bull club setup with Chelsea as the centerpiece of this potential multi-club model.

[Arkadiusz Milik](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/179359/Arkadiusz-Milik) header, but Benfica proceeded to dominate the next 70 minutes or so and took home a 2-1 win. It's a rush, and Club Brugge are the best purveyors of this chaos at the moment. This wasn't a dominant showing by any means (Leverkusen attempted 14 shots worth 1.1 xG to Brugge's nine shots and 0.5 xG), but this is a very mature team -- nearly half of Bruges' Champions League minutes thus far have gone to players aged 28 or older -- and they saw out the win. It's not exactly rocket science to note that the teams doing well in one competition are doing well in another (and the ones that aren't, aren't), but it sure does kill some of our narrative urges. PSG (95% to advance at the start) was the obvious heavyweight, and It probably isn't a surprise that two Portuguese teams (Sporting and Benfica) have positioned themselves to take advantage or that Ajax and Salzburg, who have done damage in recent Champions League tournaments, are in position to do so again. [Barcelona](/soccer/team?id=83) nor Inter dropped points to [Viktoria Plzen](/soccer/team?id=11706), and Bayern beat Barca in Munich on Tuesday. Two eventually easy wins for Real Madrid -- 3-0 over Celtic (with all goals in the last 35 minutes) and 2-0 over RBL (both goals in the last 10) -- mean they will almost certainly advance with ease. When you've got a Big Scary Group situation -- especially one with three demonstrably good teams and one that is pretty far back from the others -- your goals are pretty simple to describe (and difficult to accomplish): win at home against the other heavyweights and don't drop any points to the minnow. All three of their goals in Frankfurt came in the 65th minute or later, and both of their goals against Spurs were in the 90th or later. We started out with Spurs at 73% to advance and the other three teams all between 37% and 53%, but every match has caused a lurch of some sort.
