Jermall Charlo? Dmitry Bivol? David Benavidez? Canelo Alvarez ... (ESPN)

After his decision victory over Gennadiy Golovkin on Saturday, what's next For Canelo Alvarez?

Against Bivol, he won three rounds at most and the size difference was certainly a factor. Alvarez's lone victory at 175 pounds came against a faded version of Sergey Kovalev in November 2019, a brutal 11th-round KO after Alvarez struggled at times earlier in the fight. "I need to rest my hand, my body, but I will come back stronger. "I need to rest my body," Alvarez said. His next bout could come against Bivol in a rematch for the light heavyweight title he failed to win in May. "I can't hold a glass," Alvarez said in the ring after the fight.

Canelo and GGG End One of Boxing's Fun Rivalries (The New York Times)

For all his successes and talent, Gennadiy Golovkin is destined to be remembered as Saúl Álvarez's foil.

After the fight was delayed while Álvarez served a suspension for testing positive for clenbuterol (he blamed tainted meat he ate in Mexico and said he stopped eating beef), Golovkin called his onetime sparring partner a drug cheat. “He pretends to be a good person and be different, but he’s not.” Whether he fights Bivol next, or somebody else, it seems Álvarez’s future resides in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, one more reason his struggle with Golovkin is finally over. Golovkin won most of the later rounds on the judges’ scorecards, and he has to wonder what would have happened had he begun the fight aggressively. The king of his rivalry with Golovkin certainly, finally. It was perhaps an incongruous statement coming from Álvarez, ever the showman, considering he was wearing a crown as he said it. Fight weekends are always big in Las Vegas, and this time tens of thousands of Mexicans and Mexican Americans descended on The Strip to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, which was on Friday, in proximity to its favorite fighter. The judges scored the fight 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 in favor of Álvarez, scoring that did not do Álvarez’s dominant win justice. Golovkin spent the first two-thirds of the fight weakly probing with his left jab and tagged Álvarez with damaging punches only when he abandoned caution late. Golovkin, 40, is such a fearsome puncher — he has won all of his professional fights against boxers not named Saúl Álvarez, and almost all of them by knockout — that he is regularly avoided. To be remembered as the fighter whose greatest value lay in providing a canvas for Álvarez, known as Canelo, to paint on. Golovkin, then, over the course of 24 rounds, stuck as closely to Álvarez as anybody has.

But ultimately, the general feeling after the fight was that Alvarez had comfortably won the fight, and could have won by a wider margin than the scorecards make it seem. However, knowing that he was likely down by a near-insurmountable margin, Golovkin turned it around in the latter part of the bout and rallied to bring the fight to Alvarez. The Mexican now appears to be keen to move back up to light-heavyweight, with a Dmitry Bivol rematch the most likely next option. Many felt that Alvarez had comfortably won the fight, but he was unfazed by the dodgy scoring, telling reporters after the fight that "I didnt hear the scores. The first round was essentially a toss up, with Moretti ultimately going with Alvarez, while Weisfeld and Sutherland ended up going with Golovkin. But despite a seemingly wide win for the undisputed champion, it was razor-close on the judges' scorecards, which were released in the early hours of the morning.

"That's because we haven't been able to work explosively in the gym, but despite all of the problems that we've had I'm really happy with my performance tonight." He has claimed that he couldn't even hold a glass at times, telling ESPN that it was "f***ed", and plans to chase down a rematch with Bivol once he is cleared for competition. Alvarez is said to have a TFCC tear, which is a cartilage in the wrist that has affected his body's abilities to move to joint without him feeling considerable pain. But I need to take my time a little bit, maybe May, September I need to take my time." However, it came at a cost as the pound-for-pound great irritated an injury that dates back to his fight with Caleb Plant last year and now faces 12 months on the sidelines. But he could miss the best part of the next 12 months, telling reporters at a post-fight press conference today that his hand is severely hurt.

He has not explained to whom he was speaking, and was not asked about it in his post-fight press conference. While the judges' scorecards painted a picture of a fight that was just one round away from being another draw, the bout itself was in fact much more one-sided. Motivated by closing his Golovkin rivalry, Canelo Alvarez made amends with his longtime foe: “We gave the fans three good fights.”

I feel fresh, still have good power, and the first opponent that comes (at me), I will be looking to return to the ring.” He’s strong and that’s why we are here, and I am glad to have shared the ring with him,” Alvarez said. “I have gone through some difficult things in my life and the only thing you can do (in defeat) is to try and continue to move forward,” Alvarez said. “He’s a real warrior.” “It is very important for me and my legacy.” Surgery is required and up to six-to-12 months of recovery, he revealed, confiding, “I can’t even pull grass.” "We had three fights that will go down in the history of boxing." “Probably a tactical mistake,” Golovkin concluded of the inactivity that plagued him. His reactions were slower than in the fierce 2017 and 2018 battles with Alvarez and he looked winded. We felt content to lay down our rivalry.” And I was able to hit him, too." He twice whiffed on left-handed blows and was relegated to repeated jabs without sufficient follow-ups.

Alvarez and Golovkin first fought in 2017 and again in 2018, but those 24 rounds did nothing to determine superiority among two evenly matched fighters with nearly unmatched combinations of skill and punching power. The 32-year-old Alvarez was a 5-to-1 favorite shortly before the opening bell, and he fought like it. "I have a great plan," Golovkin said of his future. Golovkin again said he won't retire after this bout, but the longtime middleweight champion took only his second loss-and the first that was decisive. Alvarez wasn't much more accurate, landing only 26 percent of his shots, but the Mexican star landed 85 power punches to Golovkin's 46 and controlled the ring for long stretches. "I have a lot of appointments. Golovkin started far too slowly with no clear strategy to take the initiative away from Alvarez. I'm glad to be involved in that kind of fight." "For me, I'm just glad to share the ring with him. I've gone through difficult times with my defeat, but defeats can show how you can be great, how you can come back and show humility." Golovkin rallied late, but ran out of time. The Associated Press also favored Canelo, 117-111.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin III was NOT a classic (Deadspin)

Too many once-anticipated fights are taking place long after they should.

Make it happen while fans and the participants still care enough and can put on an amazing match. That was another dream bout that happened far too late, and the evidence was in the product. But this was probably the last big stage elite fight we’ll see GGG take part in. This was another example of a fight left on the shelf a few years past its expiration date. [long-awaited](https://www.ringtv.com/640194-on-this-day-lennox-lewis-punishes-and-knocks-out-mike-tyson-in-eight-rounds/) match in 2002 that had been talked about for almost a decade. The bottom line here is this third fight happened far too late for it to leave fans satisfied. On Saturday night, Golovkin was clearly a boxer fighting way past his prime. In the third bout, neither guy looked great, but it’s safe to say GGG is long past his prime. During that span, Canelo has grown leaps and bounds and entered his absolute peak prime years as a fighter. Alvarez and Golovkin should be congratulated for the overall trilogy and theater they’ve provided over such a long period. GGG looked every bit of 40 years old in that ring. The fight left most fans, and even those covering the battle inside the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, underwhelmed.

As reported by ESPN, Canelo arranged a contract with boxing promoter Eddie Hearn to organize two fights throughout 2022 with a total purse of $85 million: the first was before Dmitry Bivol and the second took place last night against the Kazakh fighter. As long as I have to take to get my hand right, my body right and we'll see what comes next. If you add the TV rights that, according to DAZN, were bought by 1.1 million people, the final unofficial number would climb to $93.4 million for Alvarez. Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin Rivalry Ends on a Quiet Note (BoxingScene.com)

LAS VEGAS - And that is that. An embrace inside the ring between rivals Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin ended 36 rounds of a tumultuous rivalry.

Seeing them acknowledge one another after the fight showed the respect each has for one another despite the insults each would throw at one another in press conferences, commercials, and social media. Alvarez and Golovkin brought out the best in each other. Despite moving up in weight and is still the current top middleweight in the sport, owning two world title belts, Golovkin is on the downside of his career. Instead, Alvarez made it very clear that he did not want the third fight with Golovkin. The Alvarez-Golovkin fight could have and should have been immediately fought in May 2019. It was unfortunate that the scorecards (115-113, 115-113, and 116-112) did not anywhere near reflect how the fight played out.

Lomachenko Thinks Golovkin Had "health" Problem For Canelo ... (Boxing News 24)

Canelo vs. Golovkin - By Craig Daly: Vasyl Lomachenko suspects that Gennadiy Golovkin fought Canelo Alvarez with a "health" problem with his right hand ...

“Before the fight, you think about the strategy of fighters, but during a fight, it all changes; it all happens. After this performance, Lomachenko said that Golovkin could “retire” from the sport. Occasionally, Golovkin would throw a right, but it wasn’t like how he normally fights. “Look, I don’t know; nobody knows. “It was a very interesting fight, but I think GGG has a problem with his health, because he only worked all during the fight with his left hand” said Vasyl Lomachenko to By Craig Daly: Vasyl Lomachenko suspects that Gennadiy Golovkin fought Canelo Alvarez with a “health” problem with his right hand last Saturday night because he ONLY used his left hand throughout the 12-round bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

What comes next for Canelo Alvarez after beating Gennady Golovkin? (Daily Mail)

Prior to this year, he had been on a sensational run which had seen him move up to light-heavyweight to beat Sergey Kovalev before cleaning out the ...

Should he decide to go down this route, Hearn has some British opponents potentially lying in wait. Canelo turned professional at just 15, and has had 62 fights across his 17-year career to date. Then there is Chris Eubank Jr. Eubank Jr is still one of the biggest names in British boxing, and if he can get past Benn, this could lead to a fight with Canelo, potentially at a football stadium in the UK. Hearn has not been shy in revealing that he has had difficulties negotiating with the Eubanks in the past, but he has managed to put on a huge domestic scrap between Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, which is due to take place next month. Despite Ryder's improvements at 168lbs, Canelo would still be the heavy favourite to beat him, and the Mexican may see this as the perfect opportunity for him to showcase his skills in front of the UK fans. However, he does appear to have a strong relationship with the promoter and the broadcaster, and could decide to continue working with them. At 32, it would be too early to say that the end of his career is in sight, but there is a real possibility that his best years are now behind him, especially when you consider that he started in the paid ranks as a 15-year-old. He has held world titles in four different weight divisions, and perhaps now is the time for him to settle back down in a specific division so that he is not demanding too much from his body. Canelo has admitted that he does not know when he will return to the ring post-surgery, and an extensive period of rest may be what he needs to rediscover his spark. Canelo revealed after his fight with Golovkin that he has been struggling with an injury to his left hand for a number of months. But he was made to look ordinary in his defeat to Dmitry Bivol in May, and he failed to dazzle against Golovkin as well, despite getting his hand raised at the end.

Bivol, however, has a hurdle to face in WBA mandatory challenger Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs) on November 5 , from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Each time it looked like Canelo would walk through “GGG” he seemed to put on the brakes. He said he injured his wrist in his November 2021 victory over Caleb Plant to become the first undisputed super middleweight world champion. Despite the close scorecards, Alvarez dominated three-quarters of the fight against Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs), until the ninth round. But I need to take my time a little bit. But take my time.”

Canelo's options: fight his mandatory or ditch the belts (Bad Left Hook)

Canelo Alvarez presently has two mandatory challengers in David Benavidez and William Scull.

Benavidez could have had this fight years ago if he’d kept his head on straight, and Canelo was under no obligation to hand him a title shot. There’s a new purse bid coming up for Parker and Andrade after the first fight collapsed and it’s unclear if Morrell will ever fight Aidos Yerbossynuly, who won a WBA final eliminator in 2021. Having cleared his immediate IBF obligation by beating Caleb Plant for the belt and with the WBA showing no signs of making him fight “world” champion David Morrell, Canelo Alvarez entered 2022 with just one overdue mandatory: Zach Parker, who was coming up on two years since he’d stopped Rohan Murdock in a supposed WBO final eliminator.
