Over 90 videos of an unfinished, in-development version of GTA 6 have been released online, with Rockstar sources confirming to journalist Jason Schreier ...
Changes in company culture at Rockstar are said to have reduced overtime for developers and changed the tone of the game itself, with humor that is less likely to punch down at marginalized groups. On the forums, they took questions relating to the source code, and [One of the longer videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSxfIHx5pN8), about three minutes long, shows the female player character robbing a diner, threatening staff and customers, who react in fear to having a gun pulled on them. The videos have been so widely distributed already that Take-Two’s lawyers may be fighting a losing battle in trying to scrub them from the internet. [50 minutes of footage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxIPmU07Ds0). In an unprecedented leak, more than 90 videos of the in-development Grand Theft Auto 6 have surfaced online.
A massive media leak has seemingly revealed GTA 6's protagonists, timeline, and long-rumored setting.
For now, though, it seems safe to say that we know where GTA 6 will take place, when it will take place, and who it will star (at least initially). While it’s a little sad to learn that GTA 6 won’t take us back in time (at least for the soundtrack’s sake), it makes sense that Rockstar wouldn’t want to give up the many modern conveniences a more modern time period offers (cell phones, the internet, etc.). Furthermore, it seems that the leaked footage and screenshots represent either a work-in-progress version of GTA 6 or an even older version of the game. Not only do many of the background locations certainly look like Vice City (palm trees, beaches, etc.), but at one point, we actually see a character board a “Vice City Metro” train. Furthermore, I won’t be directly sharing links to the pieces of leaked media in question. That all changed a little earlier today when one of the biggest leaks in video game history seemingly gave the world their first look at an in-progress build of GTA 6.

The hacker indicated in a follow-up message about the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game, “I am looking to negotiate a deal,” and raised the prospect of publishing more internal information about the project. The last Grand Theft Auto came out in 2013 and became the most valuable entertainment property, built on the sustained popularity of its companion online game. It will feature a playable female protagonist for the first time in the series and will be primarily set in a fictional version of Miami, Bloomberg reported. The hacker posted dozens of never-before-seen videos from Grand Theft Auto VI on an online message board over the weekend. Moreover, the NPC conversations, cars, and other assets remind one of GTA 5. Some experts believe that the leak will force Rockstar to cull the work-from-home flexibility for its developers which may cause a temporary halt in the development process. Did the hacker behind the Uber hack just breach Rockstar Games' servers and leak Grand Theft Auto 6 development videos?
As well as making claims to be the same 'Tea Pot' hacker who was behind the Uber incident, the threat actor says they had gained access to both GTA 5 and GTA 6 source code along with other assets. That Slack server access was involved, and the very public, boastful nature of the video postings certainly suggest a similar modus operandi, however. As evidence of this, videos of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6, which is still in the early stages of development, have been leaked and published online.

Yesterday, Rockstar suffered one of the worst leaks in gaming history as a hacker posted 90 videos from early builds of Grand Theft Auto 6, ...
But what problem I’m not sure Rockstar has to contend with in the wake of this is that public perception of GTA 6 has dropped because of the early leaked footage. So yes, this leak is hugely damaging to GTA 6 development given everything that came out and a hacker who at least claims to have the source code of the game itself. But I do wonder if they’ll now release some official news and looks at the game they can control, given that everyone’s interest is now piqued. A segment where Lucia robs a diner had some interesting, very detailed NPC AI as they react to the robbery, and it all just looks…very good, especially for being what, potentially three years away from release? It’s not good for development of the game. But what the leaks showed was something perhaps a bit surprising.

“From what we’ve read about the situation, it may force a large amount of rework and in the process slow production down considerably,” the MoffettNathanson analyst wrote. “The footage alone wouldn’t do much to harm the commercial prospects of the game, in our view, although it’s completely unfair to Rockstar,” Griffin wrote. First released in 1997, the open-world, action-adventure “Grand Theft Auto” game has been far and away the top-selling title for Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company.

In the two decades plus I've covered gaming, I'm not sure I can recall a leak more startling than this weekend's dump of 90 videos from a test build of GTA ...
I feel for the developers who want their games to be shown in the best light, but I don't think some leaked pictures or videos do much to dampen the excitement of playing it, in the end. I'm actually way less leery of a leaked game trailer or footage that was never meant to be public than I am the official trailers for movies I'm excited to see. Evan and I talked about this in the morning meeting, and part of the problem stems from the fact that gamer culture has completely ingrained the idea that information is parceled out to us in small portions to build excitement. And this hacker is definitely going to get caught and go to prison. It looks like GTA, and I don't think anyone was expecting GTA to not look like GTA. Naïve of me, maybe, to hope for the internet at large to empathize with something instead of thoughtlessly critique it, but I have seen a fair number of YouTube and Reddit commenters genuinely intrigued by this massive peek behind the curtain. Whether I hear about the next Mass Effect game tomorrow or in five years' time makes no difference to me, because I am a modern warrior monk with diversified interests and hobbies. Moments like this call attention to the fact that only video games are marketed as a drip-feed of information in slow procession. I really don't like the culture that's built up around extracting any and all details about games years before they're real (often shared with the goal of chasing clout). I have never made a game, and never will, but am sure it's a diabolical experience to see your work in progress pored over. Though nothing new for the games industry, and increasingly the wider entertainment media now that everything is digital, working from home and the proliferation of productivity software during the pandemic has surely only increased the risks. In that instance the damage to Valve team's morale (though ultimately not the game's critical or commercial reception) was [well-documented](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-final-hours-of-half-life-2/1100-6112889/), so we can imagine how aggrieved Rockstar's team must be feeling at seeing their unvarnished work stolen and shared.

This is something else altogether, and it’s not a win for transparency in any sense of the word. The point here is, it’s not like Rockstar is looking at this leak and feverishly thinking about how to get ahead of the story, as in an episode of The West Wing. Reuters, citing Bank of America analysts, says Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to generate bookings (i.e., contracted revenue) of $3.5 billion at launch and $2 billion thereafter. 30, and then [partially confirmed them two days later](https://www.polygon.com/23332863/assassins-creed-mirage-confirmed-release-date-ubisoft), mainly as an announcement for a livestream event in which everything would be revealed, anyway. [a leaker gave up](https://www.polygon.com/2015/4/23/8478211/nba-2k16-spike-lee-cover-stars-release-date-ps4-xbox-one) that Spike Lee was directing NBA 2K16’s story mode, and they also revealed two of the game’s three cover stars. Most of MultiVersus’ roster [was data-mined in March](https://www.polygon.com/23291209/multiversus-leaked-datamine-upcoming-character-roster-complete-fighter-list), and Warner Bros. This leak, comprising about an hour of in-development footage, is a work in progress in its rawest form, albeit without that little disclaimer at the bottom of the screen. Fans were able to compile a playable version of the game one year before its launch in November 2004. [reported this summer](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-27/gta-6-release-date-rockstar-cleans-up-image-after-employee-backlash#xj4y7vzkg), GTA 6 has been in development “in some form” since 2014. But setting Stuff They Don’t Want You to See loose into the wild like this is hardly a victory for transparency, or whatever higher-minded idea some might try to attach to what was, from the looks of it, an online burglary. Either way, it’s unlikely that whatever they stole from Rockstar would do much more in the public’s hands than recreate the kind of janky demonstrations seen on Sunday.
PC gaming is abuzz today: Over the weekend roughly an hour of footage from Grand Theft Auto 6 was leaked onto the internet. Most of the videos, ...
A couple of apps are referenced in the footage, like LifeInvader (the parody of Facebook from GTA 5) and WhazUp, which seems to be a play on WhatsApp (the messaging app also owned by Facebook). In one short clip we see a character on the ground in the prone position. What we still don't know: Well, it's just one tiny clip so we have no idea if expanded stealth will be in the game. Only once is a small portion of the map shown, so we don't know how far outside of Vice City the world roams. But several clips from the leak show pedestrians holding smart phones, with one appearing to take a selfie. One of the leaked clips shows a light rail car with "Vice City Metro" painted on the side as Jason walks onto the train and then exits it. In the original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was a stand-in for Miami, so we're headed back to Florida for GTA 6. What we still don't know: While most of the footage shows either Lucia or Jason, we still know very little about them. It's not like a reveal trailer leaked early or it's 90 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay: There are some interesting tidbits, but the footage doesn't really shed a lot of new light on the game or answer the biggest questions we have. Most of the videos, some 90 different clips, are just a few seconds long and show early development footage and game testing in debug mode, though a few longer sequences show interior locations and some character dialogue. While I've seen just about all of the footage, I won't be sharing a link to it or posting screenshots in this article. And frankly, while the footage gives the answers to a few of the questions we've had for years, the clips appear to largely be made for the purposes of bug reports or animation tests.
The GTA 6 leaks are filled with references to the game's weapons and vehicles, as well as a few needle drops that hint at some final soundtrack selections.
While I will personally always love Vice City‘s period-specific soundtrack, one of the biggest advantages to a GTA game set in the modern era is the fact that they can realistically include music from every time period. The band also contributed to the GTA 5 soundtrack, so there’s clearly a relationship there. I also didn’t notice any flying vehicles or motorcycles clearly showcased in any of the leaked footage, but it’d be shocking to learn that both of those vehicle styles won’t be present and functional in the final version of the game. Given that one of the most significant clips in the GTA 6 leak sees the game’s playable characters participate in a fairly elaborate diner robbery, I do think that the game will eventually emphasize the “theft” part of the GTA name. However, we do see a few glimpses of more elaborate vehicles such as the latest model of Pegassi sports cars (essentially the GTA universe’s equivalent of exotic Italian sports cars). Actually, those who comb through the leaks closely enough will find a few early examples of GTA 6‘s arsenal of weapons, collection of vehicles, and even a few soundtrack selections.
Whelp, back to the drawing board: Rockstar Games confirmed that about 90 videos of early development versions of Grand Theft Auto were leaked, Darrell reports.
