Springboks player ratings vs Argentina | The Rugby Championship (RugbyPass)

South Africa stayed alive in the Rugby Championship with a hard-earned 36-20 win over Argentina in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

Francois Steyn (on for Willemse, 65th min) – 6 – Brought the calmness the Boks needed in the backline when Los Pumas looked to steal the show. Albertus Smith (on for De Jager, 54th min) – 5 – Won a breakdown penalty in his first action as a replacement. Deon Fourie (on for Kolisi, 60th min) – 6 – Won a crucial turnover penalty with two minutes remaining and worked hard on defence. Was a real menace on defence. However, was yellow-carded and conceded a penalty try – which put his team under pressure. Great work off the ball, but it was his physical presence on defence and at the breakdown that was invaluable. Continued to work hard and took his tackle count into double digits. He also made a match-high 17 tackles. His reading of the game is up with the best. Great on defence and with the ball in hand. He was not flawless, but is settling into his new role. However, he conceded a couple of penalties and a yellow card.

Springboks overcome off-field issues to keep Rugby Championship ... (Independent Online)

The Springboks endured a difficult week off the field, but kept their Rugby Championship hopes alive with a win over Argentina on it.

Steyn added the extras to stretch their lead and keep their hopes of a bonus-point victory alive. Argentina were awarded a penalty try (13-22). They got some points for it when flyhalf Damian Willemse levelled the scores with a penalty conversion. It all started with a strong run by youngster Canan Moodie, before scrunhalf Jaden Hendrikse went over in the corner. It felt almost unrealistic that they hadn't scored by the 65th minute. They set up a lineout five metres out, but nothing came of it as they lost it.

“It was great to get this this win for our country and the people behind us,” said Kolisi. “We will assess the injuries in the next two days and then make decisions on whether we have to bring in players next week. All credit to the players for remaining composed and showing their character in the way they played.” “The coaches believe in us, and we believe in ourselves, and we have ambitions of doing much more. Disappointingly, these allegations have already appeared online despite the absence of any evidence to support them. But I must take my hat off to the players for keeping such calm heads toward the end of the game to pull it through.” De Allende was pleased the team and backline’s progress in the last few months and said: “Not much has changed in the backline. The set piece battle was always going to be big in the match.” We are looking forward to it.” They will kick off their on-field preparations for their final match of the competition against Los Pumas on Tuesday. There were some good hands to the touchline, and we would like to continue improving as a team.” “We knew they would fight back, and unfortunately our discipline lacked in the second half.

Tyler Maclennan, a Grade 9 learner at Fourways High School has high hopes after being called up in the Golden Lions U15 rugby team.

My primary school introduced rugby when I was in Grade 4 and I was hooked. I have been training with my dad since the age of seven at Pound for Pound gym doing boxing, wrestling and MMA. Tyler had previously been announced in the U13 Lions side but Covid-19 reared its ugly head and prevented sports from taking place.

WORLD OF RUGBY: Rugby is crying out for a 'Drive to Survive ... (Daily Mail)

Northampton are showing the way for a sport which needs to abandon secrecy and bare its soul to create more box-office appeal.

Let people see the beating heart of the sport and it would take off with a new audience. Everyone is scrabbling for their slice of a pie which just isn't big enough to go round. The official deserves credit for taking an important stand, not damnation from one-eyed pundits. There is not enough ball-in-play time and there is far too much cynical stalling. The time has come for rugby to abandon secrecy and bare its soul, to create more box-office appeal. Last season, Nadolo's humble nature was apparent when he turned up to take part in training at local, lower-league Leicestershire clubs Birstall RFC and Quorn RFC. These impressive productions by the Saints provide the sort of insight which is too often lacking in a game so used to keeping its true nature hidden away. There's plenty of swearing - bleeped out - but that's the reality of rugby changing-rooms. The uninitiated could become hooked if they were given a glimpse of so much raw human emotion which the game is founded on. Viewers won't be drawn to content which isn't raw and real. The sport has all the ingredients for the sort of documentary series which have become such a familiar staple on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime. rugby is crying out for a 'Drive to Survive' project

South Africa defeat Argentina in Rugby Championship (The South African)

Tries from scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse, centre Damian de Allende, a brace from hooker Malcolm Marx and a penalty try proved enough to keep South Africa's title ...

But De Allende powered through two tackles to score from close range and Marx benefitted from tired tackling to score in the corner as South Africa extinguished Argentine hopes. Almost immediately, Matias Moroni made a stunning break though the heart of the Springbok defence to dot down under the posts and Boffelli’s conversion made it a two-point game, with South Africa still down to 14 men. South Africa brushed aside a series of scandals during the week to storm grab a bonus point 36-20 win over Argentina on Saturday. The tide appeared to be turning in their favour when Willie le Roux was sent to the bin after a string of South African infringements. “The message was very simple: we trained in the style of rugby we want to play and we didn’t see that in the first half,”said Cheika. Scrum-half Bertranou was yellow carded and Lood de Jager bulldozed over for what would have been a fourth South Africa try, only for Doleman to rule there was a knock-on in the build-up as the Boks led 22-6 at half-time.

Underhill’s absence is a blow for England head coach Eddie Jones as the countdown to next year’s World Cup in France continues to gather pace. To muscle our way up the field to 80 metres to score and give us the chance of the draw is a massive credit to the players and their efforts. It's important for us to get a win and put in a performance we could be proud of. It is a starting point and we now want to build on it. A tweak to the global calendar could pave the way for the perfect ... (RugbyPass)

A more marketable Super Rugby season would strengthen rugby's standing in Australia while also future-proofing the game in New Zealand - and it's easily ...

A more marketable Super Rugby season (along with the addition of cross-over games with Asia and some incredible popular heritage series) would likely strengthen the standing of the game in Australia while also future-proofing the game in New Zealand. By pushing out the international calendar by a month, the Test season for the Southern Hemisphere nations could run from the start of August until the end of November, creating a perfect window for the club season to operate between February and July. Australia, meanwhile, could introduce their own similar competition to be played concurrently with the North v South series – something RA have had one eye on for a number of years. [All Blacks](https://www.rugbypass.com/teams/new-zealand/)’ standing on the world stage has been strengthened by the creation of the five franchises, with strong links between each of the players on the field. Many would argue that there’s also still a divide between the clubs and the wider regions, with the There are undoubtedly some who have taken this improvement as a sign of things to come, that the disruptions of 2020 and 2021 (which saw NZ and [Australia](https://www.rugbypass.com/teams/australia/) split off to play their separate [Super Rugby Aotearoa](https://www.rugbypass.com/super-rugby-aotearoa/) and AU competitions) left the Australian sides unprepared for trans-Tasman warfare and that with more regular match-ups throughout the season, the competition will even out over time. Rugby Australia have made it clear they aren’t willing to shed a team, however – and that means it might be up to NZR to think outside the box. The trans-Tasman games didn’t kick off until halfway through the season when teams were already struggling with injuries and Moana Pasifika’s addition to the competition meant that the next tier of talent which would normally slot in as injury replacements for the existing five NZ franchises was no longer available as a resource. It would also make the current NPC somewhat redundant, but that’s perhaps a natural evolution of the game in New Zealand. Ultimately, NZR should be looking to future-proof the game, which means what worked almost three decades ago when the franchises were first conceived in 1996 may no longer be appropriate and sunk costs shouldn’t prevent a necessary switch-up. Selecting players from nine different sides would present a bigger challenge – but there’s a potential solution to that. From 2016 until 2018, they lost over 40 games in succession.

Hitting the edge from deep has now become a regular option for the All Blacks. They tried at times in Mbombela but handling let them down. [Will Jordan](https://www.rugbypass.com/players/will-jordan/) on a kick chase has been a major problem for the opposition. The Rugby Championship has seen a more explosive All Black side, in part because of their willingness to use any part of the field to attack space on offer, a stark contrast to the conservatism that had crept into their game in the Irish series. The biggest difference has been the evolution of the kicking game and a change in risk appetite to a level now that is currently the highest tolerance for risk in test rugby.

Springboks beat Pumas to rival All Blacks for Rugby Championship (1 News)

All four teams could still win the most fiercely competitive championship in the last round next weekend.

Warned repeatedly by New Zealand referee James Doleman, who penalized the Pumas 12 times in the half, the home side lost a second player to the sin-bin, scrumhalf Gonzalo Bertranou, and almost conceded another try on halftime. Then the Springboks produced a textbook lineout maul that carried hooker Malcolm Marx over the line for 22-6 after 32 minutes. Carreras conceded the penalty try and was sin-binned.
