The Laver Cup is your last chance to see tennis' 'Big Three' together ... (NPR)

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had a three-way rivalry that made each of them better — and was awfully fun to watch.

Sure, without all three of you in the mix, maybe one of you alone would hold all 63 Grand Slam titles. People can argue back and forth why any one of you is the greatest of all time. We are all blessed to have watched all of you play against each other. (Ironically, that's the same number of Grand Slams that Pete Sampras won, before the Big Three came on the scene and obliterated his reign as the GOAT.) It's not the Olympics. It's not the NBA championship.

Laver Cup 2022: teams, captains, matches, schedule and results (AS English)

The 2022 Laver Cup will go down in history as the last time the Big Four will play together at the same tournament as Team Europe take on Team World.

The Australian enjoyed his best season to date this year, reaching the Wimbledon final and winning the Australian Open in doubles and would have been a considerable test for any of Team Europe, which contains five top-10 players (if Federer’s protected ranking of nine is taken into account). Captains can pick and choose who to use on days 2 and 3, with all players playing at least one singles game and at least four different players from each team competing in doubles. Roger Federer, who [announced his retirement ](https://en.as.com/other_sports/federer-on-bowing-out-i-totally-overachieved-in-my-mind-n/)from the ATP Tour last week, was one of the driving forces behind the Laver Cup, [which was inaugurated in 2017 ](https://en.as.com/other_sports/laver-cup-what-is-it-how-does-it-work-atp-points-and-format-n/)as an annual tournament pitting the best players from Europe against the rest of the world over three days. Team World came close to upsetting the odds in 2019 in Geneva, assuming an 11-7 lead on the final day before Federer beat John Isner and Zverev saw off Milos Raonic to lead Team Europe to victory. Federer will only play doubles and it remains to be seen if Nadal will compete in singles. [The 2022 Laver Cup](https://en.as.com/other_sports/laver-cup-where-is-it-played-dates-times-tv-and-where-to-watch-the-tennis-live-online-n/) will be an historic occasion, marking the final time the “Big Four” of modern tennis will be seen together in a competitive environment.

Sure, without all three of you in the mix, maybe one of you alone would hold all 63 Grand Slam titles. People can argue back and forth why any one of you is the greatest of all time. My prediction and hope is that the whole world will be watching with me. We are all blessed to have watched all of you play against each other. And, this weekend, I will be rooting for all three of them. (Ironically, that's the same number of Grand Slams that Pete Sampras won, before the Big Three came on the scene and obliterated his reign as the GOAT.) It's not the Olympics. [I referred to Pete Sampras](https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1291513) as the best tennis player that ever lived. Roger Federer's emotional farewell brings down the house | News ... (Laver Cup)

Roger Federer brought the curtain down on his illustrious career in an emotion-packed Friday night session at London's O2 Arena, finishing his final match ...

Three times he and Nadal were two points from victory – at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set and 8-8 in the match tiebreak – and they moved to within a point of victory at 9-8. “It does feel like a celebration,” he told the crowd, “it’s what I wanted it to be, so thank you. The match itself was the perfect way for Federer to go out. In the third game he moved for a forehand down the line and threaded it through the tiny gap between the net post and the net. It ended two-and-a-quarter hours later with Sock wrong-footing Nadal with a forehand up the alley, but from then on the American pair took a back seat as the show belonged to Federer. But Friday’s story was all about Federer and the final chapter of a career that signs him off him as one of the greatest athletes in the history of sport, not just tennis.
