Joburg council to vote on election of new speaker (SowetanLIVE)

The DA's Alex Christians and COPE's Colleen Makhubele are the two candidates who have been nominated for the City of Joburg's speaker position.

Combined, the opposition has a total of 130 seats in chambers, meaning they would need an additional six votes which can only come from inside the multiparty coalition for Makhubele to ascend to the position of speaker. The DA-led multiparty coalition government has a total of 140 of 270 seats in council. A total of 270 councillors are present in Wednesday’s sitting.

Cope's Colleen Makhubele celebrated becoming the new speaker, at the Joburg council sitting on Wednesday after receiving 141 votes.

“Minority parties stood together and held hands and have said unless we all win, then it’s not a win in the City of Johannesburg. The position became vacant after Cope and IFP councillors voted with the ANC to oust Da Gama. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika after her election, Makhubele said her victory was a victory for the minority parties in the Joburg Council who had stood together.
