Mayor Mpho Phalatse heads to court to halt motion of no confidence ... (Daily Maverick)

The head of the Joburg Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse will be on the chopping block at the council meeting scheduled for Friday, 30 September.

“In particular, it beggars belief that Herman Mashaba, whose party initiated the entire process by violating the coalition agreement to call for the renegotiation of previously agreed-upon positions, claims to be a victim of arrogance and bullying. He goes on to outline how the IFP has been underrepresented as far as positions in the coalition are concerned. “The definition of quorum means a total of 50% plus one of elected councillors. UPDATE on Friday 9.15am: The City of Joburg mayor Mpho Phalatse is fighting for her survival. In an attempt to clean up the mess Mashaba created, the Coalition Task Team met last night to agree on a united communications plan. However, Beaumont hit back, saying that the DA does not believe in co-governance but instead wants to govern alone with the support of others. 📑 The Joburg coalition agreement proves that Herman Mashaba signed-off on the allocation of positions. [Helen Zille ](https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-09-19-helen-zille-unplugged-da-is-not-racist-nor-arrogant/)refused any changes being made in a letter she sent to the coalition technical task team on Sunday. The coalition partners then held a virtual meeting on Sunday night where they vented their frustrations about the matter to DA leader John Steenhuisen. They went on to accuse ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba of being a liar. Just after the news of her possible ousting, Phalatse penned an open letter where she ruled out the possibility of resigning: “Over the last few days, there have been calls for my resignation, pending the tabling of a motion of confidence in me, and by extension the entire Executive of the city. Their only focus will be to empty the city’s coffers, stop service delivery and collapse the city,” it reads.

The DA's Mpho Phalatse was removed through an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence vote on Friday.

The PA, TimesLIVE understands, has agreed to the ANC’s offer of two MMC positions in exchange for its support to install Makhubele and Morero. The PA has eight councillors in the council. The ANC’s potential takeover of the metro comes after the DA refused calls from ActionSA and the Patriotic Alliance to give the speaker position to one of their coalition partners, preferably the IFP.

Steenhuisen lambasts parties who axed Joburg mayor, says DA will ... (News24)

DA leader John Steenhuisen took aim at the ANC and smaller parties which managed to vote out Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse on Friday.

The DA made us promises but gave us a false Golden Start." "The ANC, EFF and PA voted together to select the Cope rogue councillor, Colleen Makhubele, as the speaker. On receiving resistance from coalition partners, we were willing to be flexible on the candidate and nominate an alternate, Alex Christians." "But due to the treachery of individual members of coalition partners, Vasco was voted out. "We apologise, and we have learned from our mistakes. The ANC's desperation to get their hands on tenders and contracts from Johannesburg's R76 billion budget is now clear for all to see," he said.
