Man City vs Southampton live updates (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City take on Southampton on Saturday as they return to Premier League action.

They might not be in the best form this season, but Ralph Hasenhuttl knows how to get a result against City and the Blues will have to be on their game today. Ralph Hasenhuttl is under pressure at Southampton and is favourite to be the next manager to be sacked. Southampton got in behind on City’s right and it looks like the manager is keen for that not to happen again. City could already be ahead as Joao Cancelo on the left found Riyad Mahrez at the back post and forced a great save from Gavin Bazunu. De Bruyne and Haaland look such a threat whenever they pick up the ball though Pep Guardiola is getting very frustrated on the sidelines, turning away a few times if the pass hasn’t been right or it wasn’t the one he wanted. Phil Foden did really well to find Cancelo, getting clattered in the process, and maybe a moment of individual brilliance is what they needed to get them firing. They’re pressing City well and forcing them into errors on the ball. It might be surprising that it wasn't Haaland who got it though, with Cancelo and Foden getting the goals so far. It may be coincidence but that Haaland chance came just after the crowd had sparked into life again to rally the team. Rodri and Riyad Mahrez deserve credit for stopping a Southampton attack, there, feeding Kevin De Bruyne, and he set up Foden. [Haaland's](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/erling-haaland) remarkable form in front of goal continued on Wednesday as he notched another brace in the 5-0 win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Man City 4-0 Southampton: Erling Haaland scores as Joao Cancelo ... (Sky Sports)

Report and free match highlights as Manchester City cruise past Southampton thanks to goals from Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Erling Haaland; ...

"We had, in the first half, two things where we did not slide and they played so quick and there is immediately a big chance. He had been switched to right-back in the absence of Kyle Walker in midweek but whichever flank that Cancelo plays on he is a creative force. I think this then makes it a little bit harder for us then to press. The supporters seemed a little bemused by it, so accustomed have they become to seeing him score. He helped us again, he keeps the ball and fights. Even the club stuck him on the front page of the programme for this one. The goal maintained Haaland's outrageous scoring while heaping further misery on Hasenhuttl but perhaps the story of this game is that the striker's goals were not needed. Cancelo was the best player on the pitch, while Foden rivalled him until being withdrawn just before the hour mark. The finish for his goal was even cuter, dinking the ball beyond Gavin Bazunu after being played in by De Bruyne. Jack Grealish dropped to the bench with Riyad Mahrez coming in. The 22-year-old forward had been rested against FC Copenhagen in midweek along with Kevin De Bruyne and their return provided the impetus. Joao Cancelo's brilliant solo run started the scoring midway through the first half and Phil Foden added a second soon after with City utterly dominant.

Erling Haaland increased his goal tally, but Joao Cancelo was arguably the top Manchester City performer in a 4-0 win over Southampton.

With Haaland as a team-mate and De Bruyne getting even better, it wouldn't be a surprise if that record is smashed this term. It might not have been another hat-trick but it was another game when he was crucial in the final third. Of course, Erling Haaland was eventually on the scoresheet but by then the game was long over.

The reason Pep Guardiola is right about one of the keys to Man City ... (Manchester Evening News)

At Manchester City the team is more important than any one player, even Erling Haaland.

This is no coincidence; when City hired Guardiola in 2016 they weren't just hiring a coach to decide the tactics on matchday, but someone with a vision and clear specifications of how things should be done. It's common knowledge that the Portuguese midfielder has been unsettled in Manchester for a while, and wanted to leave City in each of the past three summers. Yet when on each occasion it became clear that no suitable offer was going to arrive for him, he knuckled down and played with the same commitment and passion that he always has. Oleksandr Zinchenko is the obvious example; for five seasons he stuck around at the Etihad despite rarely playing in his preferred midfield role, happy to fill in at left-back and spend prolonged periods out of the side when everyone else was fit. Guardiola is right, of course, but the attitudes of his players should come as no surprise. Placed in another dressing room, the 22-year-old striker might not have enjoyed the wildly successful start to his Premier League career that he has at City.

Pep Guardiola's tantrum and other moments missed from Man City ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City thrashed Southampton 4-0 on Saturday as Erling Haaland got on the scoresheet once again.

City were 4-0 up against Southampton and the game was well wrapped up when Ederson, under no real pressure on the ball, spooned a clearance straight out of play. Not only did he look comfortable, aware of pressure and accurate with his passing, he looked like he'd been playing in that team for years. However, it was Akanji who played 'out of position' at right-back, allowing Cancelo to stay on the left. They could well do in the upcoming trips to Copenhagen and Liverpool, as both are likely to be more open, end-to-end contests. But City encountered few issues in breaking down a side they failed to beat in the league last season, with their biggest concern being the threat of Erling Haaland's scoring run coming to an end. When City's starting XI was announced an hour before kick-off, it was perhaps the first time that many City fans felt disappointed to not see Jack Grealish's name.
