"The cold front was approaching then we had conditions that are known as Berg winds, this is winds from the interior of the country, from the high lying areas around the Drakensberg." He says this was due to a cold front that was supposed to move in.

This is why Durban's weather was'freaky' on Tuesday night (Independent Online)

The sudden gush of hot and dry wind in Durban on Tuesday night was the result of a scientific phenomenon known as a heat burst or 'berg wind', according to ...

The heat burst occurs once the warm and dry air descends to the surface (see schematic below),” STM said. “Thunderstorms develop when moist, unstable air is lifted upwards; the moisture in the cloud eventually condenses and later falls as precipitation. “For a heat burst to occur there needs to be both a dissipating thunderstorm and a hot, dry environment in the mid-levels of the atmosphere, combined with a shallow surface inversion.

Eskom, aliens, Armageddon ... exactly what happened in Durban ... (TimesLIVE)

A raging wind storm with periodic bolts of lightning during a major power outage left Durban residents questioning what happened on Tuesday night.

What's strange about it is that there was no rain despite there being lightning, the air was dry and hot, and then it all passed as suddenly as it came. Lots of wind knocking down branches and trees, some colourful lights in the sky, and then most of Durban suddenly lost power. Residents experienced a very sudden change of weather and what seemed like a heavy storm coming in.

Golden Triangle – Why Lift Chose Durban As Its Next Destination (Simple Flying)

South African newcomer Lift has been plying one of the world's busiest routes since its launch in December 2020 – Cape Town to Johannesburg.

Durban will launch from Joberg at the end of the month, with a three-times-per-day service. Things have opened up in the recent past with the demise of Mango and later Comair, but still, five airlines, including Lift, will be flying the route this South African summer. All eyes will be on whether Lift can secure its fair share of the passenger traffic. FlySafair, also a narrowbody operator, still dominates, but the small size of Airlink and Cemair’s planes means fewer passengers will be moved. And the real reason we haven't done it up until now was because the sustainability and the stability of the market hasn't been there. This gives them the ability to sustain a lot of different airlines. When you add in Durban and the routes between Johannesburg-Durban and Cape Town-Durban, you’re probably close to 75% of passenger volumes." Sticking to its mantra of sustainable, stable markets, it was a natural addition for the airline, and its passengers knew it. The CEO joked that they only launched the route to stop the constant barrage of ‘when are you going to Durban’ questions on social media. But in reality, it had always been in the plan. It had a good mix of leisure and, even though there wasn't a lot of business travel, it still had some of that on the route.” Lift announced its third route at the end of September.
