In the last games we play very well. If we play two months after maybe it will be different, but one week later we have the opportunity to close qualification. We do not have much time to reflect on how maybe we are attacking or defending.

Copenhagen vs Man City LIVE updates from Champions League ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City face FC Copenhagen in the Champions League at Parken Stadium, one win away from qualifying from Group G.

Ake was very interesting on the lack of a weakness in the striker’s game and how difficult he is to defend against even in training. He played 45 minutes in the home fixture a week ago but is amongst the substitutes for the first time in his City career this evening. Against Southampton at the weekend, it was Dias and Ake in the centre, with Akanji at right-back. Then, he was very lively making plenty of runs to stretch the defence, and when he’s played there off the bench without Haaland around, he’s caused problems too. That’s a big call from Guardiola to drop Haaland, although it was a decision that was going to come at some point. Akanji and Laporte are given the opportunity to play at the heart of the back four. More minutes for Laporte is certainly a good thing while Akanji will be pleased to play in his more favourable position of central defence after filling in at right back vs Southampton. This is a perfect chance to give him more game time, allow Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake to get a rest, and keep the competition high in the back line. He might still have a point to prove tonight. They’re making quite a noise as well, jumping up and down in unison in the two-tiered stand with half an hour still to go until the game gets underway. I think the fact they’re so dominant in all competitions, it gives Pep [Guardiola] an opportunity to rotate, rest players at the right times. [City](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-city-fc) have maximum points from their first three games in the [Champions League](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/uefa-champions-league) this season, including a 5-0 win over Copenhagen at the Etihad just six days ago.

Copenhagen vs Man City live online: Haaland on bench - score ... (AS English)

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the early game in the Champions League as Premier League big boys Manchester City arrive in Denmark to face FC ...

It means the likes of Alvarez gets a chance to show his undoubted talent. The record for Champions League goals stands at a remarkable 140 set by Cristiano Ronaldo in his spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Even so, the Norwegian goal machine would likely need at least eight, nine or more seasons at the top of his game in the Champions League to trouble Ronaldo’s efforts. This time Mahrez jinks his way into the box and then chips the ball to around the penalty area. It's a left-footed half-volley this time and the Spaniard gets it all wrong. Well, it sort of makes sense, doesn't it, to leave out the big Norwegian. The Algerian chooses to side foot his effort to the keeper's right but Grabara picks well and pushes it away. Maybe they are in a shock given the tonking they faced last week. Copenhagen build again and the blond locks of Haraldsson are again in view as the Icelandic teen controls, steps away and strikes. He gives the spot kick and Mahrez steps up. It's still unlikely given the quality of this City side but they have a chance. We're back underway and the lively crowd is immediately back and making plenty of noise.

Erling Haaland was named on the Manchester City bench for the first time this season for the Champions League fixture at FC Copenhagen.

We are so surprised how good the impact he had in the team, no problem. The guys who haven't played are tired," he said.

Pep Guardiola has sought to explain why he has been tinkering with his defence at Manchester City so much, with rotation becoming a familiar theme.

[£15 million ($17m) fee already looking quite the bargain. The players we have cannot handle every three days of being fit, other teams might be able to, but we can’t. The reigning Premier League champions have a number of top-drawer centre-halves on their books, with that department bolstered over the summer as Manuel Akanji was signed from Borussia Dortmund.

It turned out that the Manchester City manager's denial might have contained a greater degree of nuance than first appreciated.

Former Manchester City duo Shaun Wright-Phillips and Nedum Onuoha took the positives from Tuesday's draw in Copenhagen.

"You’re playing in the Champions League, down to 10 men, away from home against a team with loads of energy but in fairness to City they controlled most of the game," said the former defender. "Pep has managed over there, and he understands what it is to play against them while Ilkay Gundogan has played there. City will travel to Dortmund in two weeks knowing a win will clinch it, but Onuoha warned it won't be easy. "For me it was a great team performance away from home," Wright-Phillips said after the match. "The clean sheet was another bonus given the difficulties that we had." Sergio Gomez was rightly sent off on the half-an-hour mark following a VAR review, meaning City had to battle for an hour with 10 men.

If he is happy at City in two years’ time, then City could offer him a new contract and end up staying in Manchester for the rest of his career. Many of the other most expensive transfers in soccer have not been anywhere near as successful as imagined. And on top of the transfer fee will be an agent’s fee, which could be more than $50 million, as well as Haaland’s wages. Barcelona’s financial difficulties have been well documented and could get even worse should they fail to make the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League. Haaland is already playing for a club that is competing for the top honors in world soccer, and is already beamed around the world at Manchester City. It’s almost twice Real Madrid’s record transfer fee of $110 million, which they paid for Eden Hazard.
