Breyton Paulse on the difference between the 1999 and 2022 ... (Independent Online)

Breyton Paulse feels the current Stormers forward pack is superior compared to his team that reached the Super 12 semi-final in 1999.

They can play with a bit of flair, and that is wonderful to see — the transformation of the South African teams for that matter. “You’ve got to compliment the coaches in terms of how fast they learn — guys like John Dobson, Jake White — really worked it out with how to interpret rules, a squad system. “What has been wonderful to see is that the guys have been much more competitive. “They can physically match up to the other teams like Leinster, Ulster, the Bulls, the heavyweights. because at the end of the day, you can have the best backs in the world, but if the forwards don’t do their job, there’s nothing you can do,” the 46-year-old said. The forwards, according to Paulse.

Solid Libbok shows class to spare Stormers blushes in rainy draw ... (News24)

There was a gilt-edged opportunity late in the first half when centre Mike Collins was freed up, only to be stifled by some superb Stormers defence - one of the visitors' highlights of their showing - and a knock-on by wing Keelan Giles with the line at his mercy. Libbok's goal-kicking was flawless and it was his vision that led to the Stormers' sole try. While they won't be miffed by the result, the Stormers' post-title bubble was undeniably pricked after they were held to a 16-all draw by Ospreys in Friday night's gritty URC encounter in Swansea.

There was still time for the Stormers to have one last attacking play. However, shortly after Libbok kicked his third penalty to put the Stormers 16-9 up, Ospreys had one last push at the line through a driving maul, which resulted in hooker Scott Baldwin going over for the try and Myler slotting the decisive conversion. Ospreys v Stormers: Live updates (WalesOnline)

The Ospreys will be looking to make a statement at the Swansea.com Stadium but it will be no small task when the Stormers come to town.

It's a scrum to the Ospreys on the far side in their own half. Ospreys, meanwhile are looking to build some momentum after a mix and match start to the season. The Ospreys have got a full-blooded side out tonight with Justin Tipuric and Gareth Anscombe the only real absentees. Scrum to the Ospreys just outside the 22. Giles makes the tackle and is then penalised for not rolling away. Myler goes to the corner. Ospreys keep it tight and get to within five metres. But the hosts then fell asleep for the first time and were punished. He fumbled the ball and the Stormers counter-attacked. George North made good yards up the far touchline and Jac Morgan almost sent Keelan Giles over on the near side, but his pass under pressure was forward and the Stormers led by three points at the break. And the hosts were perhaps a little unfortunate not to get more than two scrum penalties out of referee Gianluca Gnecchi. In horrendous conditions, the first half was one for the purists.

Myler kick earns Ospreys draw against Stormers (BBC Sport)

Stephen Myler's late conversion helps Ospreys salvage a 16-16 draw against United Rugby Championship holders Stormers in atrocious conditions.

Myler levelled the scores with his second penalty before Stormers took advantage of a loose Ospreys kick and chase. "He is the consummate professional and a very reliable person to have acting as a sort of quarter-back in conditions like that." Outstanding Ospreys flanker Morgan continued to disrupt the Stormers at the contact area with a crunching tackle on Kitshoff. The home side opted for an attacking lineout rather than kicking a penalty and lost possession, with Stormers counter-attacking and getting away with an apparent forward pass only the officials appeared to miss. Stormers launched the early pressure with a Libbok penalty after Ospreys prop Nicky Smith was penalised at a scrum. Stormers had taken the advantage with a try from scrum-half Paul de Wet and 11 points from Manie Libbok.

Libbok added another penalty in the 73rd minute but the Ospreys who struggled with their execution when opportunity beckoned kept plugging away. Libbok delivered a largely composed performance and his accuracy off the kicking tee had kept the Stormers' noses in front for much of the game. Libbok's midfield switch with fit again Leolin Zas breached the Ospreys defence and by the time the final pass was delivered De Wet had the simple task of running in unopposed. Libbok opened the score with a penalty and added an impressive second from long range. Their kicking game, largely though flyhalf Manie Libbok was fit for purpose and mostly on point in absolutely atrocious conditions in the second half. Their forwards, though not having things all their own way in the scrums, put in an honest shift.

Libbok converted to give his side a 13-6 lead going into the final quarter. Skilful handling sent George North away down the right flank before good ball retention created a try-scoring opportunity, but Keelan Giles could not gather a poor pass from Jac Morgan with the line beckoning. It was therefore left to Libbok to extend their advantage with a superbly struck penalty from inside his own half.
