Norwich City v Luton Town: Dean Smith Championship preview (PinkUn)

Anger has given way to introspection for Dean Smith as he strives to get Norwich City back on winning terms against Luton Town in the Championship.

“Although Sarge played quite close to Teemu for the most part. "You look at the Championship at the moment and how close it is. The players know they let an opportunity slip through their fingers on Saturday. “They are aggressive, they're on the front foot and full of energy. “But that game probably came a little bit too quick after the first couple. “To expect him to be up to the levels that he was prior to that injury was probably a mistake on my part.

Norwich City: What next for Dean Smith and the Canaries? (PinkUn)

In 2018/19 the attacking midfielders supporting Teemu Pukki amassed a staggering 42 goals and 43 assists between them.

But Sargent is playing and scoring like a young Chris Sutton. Playing right footed players like Hernandez or Cantwell on the left = 70pc from either. His dominance on the ball has diminished by the week as opponents flood the midfield and that isn’t going to change. My opinion is that these limitations ought to result in box to box type midfielders, and it’s why I think we see consistency from McLean. A lack of midfield width = 70pc attacking commitment from an isolated Aarons. I do not wish to be misunderstood, the Irishman is a talented young player that I like. Next, by playing two strikers, a midfielder is either omitted or Sargent plays as an attacking midfielder. This is not a Smith issue, Farke had that problem last season too, and when Russell Martin seemingly insisted on re-inventing himself as a centre back, it was a problem then too. Let’s not forget that Dean Smith has largely been left with the remnants of that era as the basis of his team so this new evolution at Carrow Road is going to take time. Earlier, I alluded to Hanley playing very deep, but my opinion is actually the inclusion of Omombamidele is creating a problem. It seemed so obvious to use wing backs, and that’s why the second half was better. I have no idea, when faced with Sarr and Sema, why anyone would consider playing a narrow system and not protecting our flanks.

This is a tough game to call and is a big game for both sides even this early in the campaign. Yet Norwich City may see this as a good opportunity, at home in front of a big crowd, to find their feet again and go top ahead of Sheffield United and Burnley’s games tomorrow. That’s what has happened to Norwich in the last few games, and they have started to look a little vulnerable again,” he said. Just as you think a team is starting to look unstoppable, they hit the buffers. Whereas Norwich City have struggled to win in recent weeks, Nathan Jones’ Luton Town are unbeaten in six. Norwich City’s resurgence from bottom half to top two showed just how quickly things can change in the Championship.

Report | Norwich City 0-1 Luton Town (lutontown.co.uk)

Carlton Morris netted on his return to first club Norwich City to give the Hatters another huge win in the Sky Bet Championship.

Morris and Bell saw shots blocked at the other end as the Hatters continued to ask questions on the break, and it was Morris who broke the deadlock just after the hour, mesmerising the retreating Grant Hanley with a couple of step-overs as he progressed into the box before curling a beauty into the bottom corner for goal number seven of the season. Norwich boss Dean Smith brought Todd Cantwell on in place of Sargent, who had been down for treatment in the first half, and it was his side who had the first sight of goal in the second period, Danel Sinani firing over the bar in the 46th minute, before Aaron Ramsey did the same ten minutes later. The third-placed hosts, coming into the game after suffering back-to-back defeats at the hands of Preston and Watford, had to wait until midway through the half for their first shot at goal, and even then it was a 25-yard shot that was well off target from Gabriel Sara as the Hatters defended with great discipline.

Norwich City 0-1 Luton: Dean Smith Championship reaction (Eastern Daily Press)

Dean Smith had his say on some of the key issues after Norwich City's 1-0 Championship defeat against Luton Town.

I have been to see the referee and asked him if he had seen the full incident would he have given a penalty and he said, 'No'. (Will you appeal?) I'll have a look at it but we have to prove he has made a clear and obvious error. It was a hand in an attempt to push him off. But they were shouting that when we had a man less and it is a little bit tougher to do but I thought we made a good fist of it. It is certainly not a fist. I didn't think the reaction at half-time was as good as it could have been. I was slightly surprised the referee wanted to jump into his pocket so quickly. We should have beaten Preston and we should have beaten Luton, but we didn't create enough in the final third. Whether he pushes him in the neck or the face, it is not a punch, it is not a slap. I get the reaction at the end. The only thing that was missing was that final pass, the work in the final third. Teemu (Pukki) had a big chance and you would expect him to score.
