Newcastle vs. Everton - Lineups & Match thread: Feasting on Toffees (Coming Home Newcastle)

We're just six games (one of them an EFL Cup affair) from the World Cup break and Newcastle are currently sitting sixth in the freaking Premier League. How you ...

Fraser has not started a game for Newcastle after the break after doing so three times in a row between MD5 and MD8. No ASM tonight with a setback, so it is what it is on the wing. Chris Wood might enter the game late if Newcastle is (somehow) held to a goalless 75 minutes of play, but the odds are minimum. Keep an eye on that, as Anderson can be the under-the-radar starter of the game next to Willock and Bruno. He can track back, cover all of the pitch on defense, provide some second-wave threat arriving late on offense, and can also drift to the left wing when the winger leaves it and cuts inside. That said, a midweek game played at SJP and sandwiched between trips to Manchester and London is definitely looking like the ideal match to make some changes and give some folks a bit of a rest. - Burn has been swinging between a center-back and left-back position for the whole season moving Matt Targett to the bench. The former captain already started a match in the midweek trip to Anfield last August so it’s not crazy to see that happening again. - Joe Willock couldn’t start last Sunday’s game against Manchester United because of a virus, but he still was good for some late 13 minutes of play. - Kieran Trippier to the right is an obvious decision as it’s been all season. On the other hand, they have the bad luck of having to endure the Toon Army at SJP. With Jordan Pickford manning the goalie at the other end of SJP tonight?

Newcastle v Everton - GrandOldTeam (Grand Old Team)

I've written a few times previously about my contempt for the modern game being a fine line between hype and hysteria, engineered by and for the media and ...

Nothing more to add on the team really as you can sort of guess what it will be albeit with some presumable tweaking due to performance and amount of games. I just can’t work it out but honestly, the easiest way to deal with something irritating or confusing is to just ignore it and move on as repeatedly attacking it is a sign of madness, poor perception and – perhaps – widespread gullibility. The big hope being that DCL and any of our wingers suddenly springing into form, or a new face in midfield, might be a quick fix remedy for it. Should they have a real city rival then it might provide some healthy balance, after all no one is better at calling you out acting a prick as a near and dearest mate supporting the other team of your city. There’s a certain grounding in people subject to sustained periods of just abject projects gone wrong, it invokes humility in said people and a real appreciation for taking joy in the small things. Could it be perceived Evertonian delusion believing they are a relevant force in the division and still hold a claim to sit at the very top table of English football despite more than a quarter century of being a barely noticeable footnote of its story? You could get desolate about it of course, or you could perhaps view it as a necessary act of hubris for yet another club that thought it could buy its way to success and instead got swallowed by the bounty of its own ego, and folly. It’s OK mate, I don’t attach my entire self worth to a number of trophies a football club I like have won, with many from before I was even born. As I hope I’ve sort of touched on above, the entire league is the most hideous pantomime in town right now with no real moral high ground to be had, so fuck it, might as well enjoy the circus du grotesque. Klopp does have a point, any romantic notions of a competitive league have long gone since the league itself permitted some nefarious owners with a string of ill behaviour towards ordinary people to use high profile English football clubs as a vehicle for state or oligarch marketing. What many are seeking is in the macros of performance, attitude and fight – a feeling based and necessary counter to the abundance of data we are expected to soak up as definite reasons why our team or it’s staff are or aren’t doing as others say they should. If indeed we get to that stage or it all goes to shit sometime in winter and we end up looking for a ninth permanent manager in way less than a decade.

An astonishing 35-yard volley which screamed past goalkeeper Richard Wright into his top right-hand corner is still remembered as one of the greatest-ever Premier League goals. Frustration turned admiration as the best goal of Alan Shearer’s career finally turned a turgid game on its head. The day began well for him and Everton, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin heading them into an early lead. Florian Lejeune netted twice deep into injury time as the Magpies came from two goals down to salvage an unlikely point. meetings between Newcastle and Everton rarely fail to entertain. . .

One thing I certainly want to see is Alex Iwobi playing in the middle and not being utilised out wide, as he was as Everton chased the game at Tottenham Hotspur. Amid the intensity of the survival fight he decided against implementing a similar system at Everton, but that has now changed - though he insisted the punishments were not so severe. He added he maintains a close relationship with the England Under-21 international and the pair were both focused on how the youngster can continue to develop. But away from the high-pressure of last season's relegation battle he has now brought one in, explaining many players like what is essentially an attempt to police discipline. Everton are making progress too, but at a slower rate, and have just taken a few knocks to the confidence after that unbeaten run of six league games. He’s Everton’s best finisher - though training videos suggest Michael Keane would run anyone close despite being a centre-back - and this is a side that is creating chances but not so many that it can afford to be wasteful. With Frank Lampard's side going into this game following back-to-back defeats, there's an expectation to stop the rot against a buoyant Newcastle United. Since that game I have spoken to both Lampard and Neal Maupay and they have been clear in their backing for the players. Writing in his programme notes, the boyhood Evertonian says: "This season, Everton have been very good defensively and they'll always pose a threat with the players they have. Neal Maupay has been taking the fight to the opposition in recent weeks while ploughing a lonely furrow up front but the former Brighton & Hove Albion man has been feeding on scraps and it's been obvious that the Blues have been crying out for an aerial presence leading the line. James' Park to provide live updates on the action, as well as bringing you team news, analysis and reaction. A big call from Frank Lampard to hand Dominic Calvert-Lewin his first start of the season but it's a decision that most Evertonians will surely welcome.

Newcastle vs Everton live: Score, updates, stream link, lineups (NBC Sports)

Newcastle United looks to continue its early-season push for a top-four place when it hosts improving Everton at St. James' Park on Wednesday.

Armel Bella-Kotchap injured his shoulder against West Ham and had to come off, so Duje Caleta-Car comes in at center back in Saints’ only change. David Brooks and Lloyd Kelly are still working their way back from injury, while Ben Pearson is on the bench. Bournemouth head to West Ham on Monday, Oct. 24, while Saints host Arsenal on Sunday, Oct. Bournemouth went with a back three which was unexpected and some of their defenders seemed to be leaving it to one another and were confused positionally. Saints started with their trademark 4-2-2-2 system and they looked much more comfortable, especially defensively, with Maitland-Niles and Ward-Prowse sat in front of the back four. Pulisic was bright, daring, and did not lack for confidence in almost certainly raising Potter’s eyebrows moving forward. The USMNT winger did enough to get an assist but fellow sub Carney Chukwuemeka and his mates couldn’t supply the dagger. Newcastle had been buzzing along in attack until last week, when the scoreless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford showed the strength of its defense. This will be controversial in some circles (Liverpool circles, really), but Kieran Trippier is playing better than any healthy English fullback in the Premier League right now. That Guimares bought into the project at all is impressive, but Newcastle will find it difficult to resist overtures for the Brazilian international if they can’t fast-forward their European ambitions. Almiron’s form, found: Atlanta United’s most-famous export has five goals this season including four in his last four, and he’s made the extended absence of Allan Saint-Maximin an afterthought.
