Still clouded in controversy, former champion TJ Dillashaw looks to regain gold against the current king Aljamain Sterling who is at the height of his ...
Surging contender Sean O’Malley (should he defeat former champion Petr Yan on the undercard) stands out as the most enticing option for the UFC to be the next title challenger. For Dillashaw, a pursuit of the takedown will be key to breaking up the attack of Sterling. A win over Sterling would not only be arguably the greatest feather in his cap competitively, but would a modern era triumph to regain a UFC title for a third time. He is one of only two male bantamweight champions in promotional history to regain championship gold and has been an elite fighter for the better part of a decade. His return performance was also not quite enough to exorcise the demons as he went the distance in a razor close split-decision to Cory Sandhagen that many scored for “The Sandman.” Now competing once again for the biggest prize in the sport on the biggest stage, the emotions regarding his controversy have been reignited across the fan base. Instead, “The Funkmaster” returned with a masterful performance to overcome the dangerous Yan and cement his place as the best bantamweight in the division.

Dobson (+175) Armen Petrosyan (-200) vs. Dillashaw (+155) Aljamain Sterling (-175) vs. Dillashaw (+155). Muhammad (21-3-1) is known for his nonstop pace that involves a combination of grappling, wrestling and striking. In the co-main event, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling (-175) defends his title against No. The late-blooming Oliveira (33-8-1) had lost four of six and appeared headed toward journeyman status before he embarked on his current winning streak. Marley also has strong picks for Oliveira vs. This probably comes down to who is having success in the wrestling, and I will side with Muhammad," Marley told SportsLine. Makhachev is a -190 favorite (risk $190 to win $100), while Oliveira comes back at +170 in the latest UFC 280 odds from Caesars Sportsbook. But to become champion he must get past the top-ranked Oliveira, who has won 11 straight fights and has dominated the division since the turn of the decade.

Omargadzhiev has youth on his side and shown to be better at getting the fight to the ground than his opponent in their Octagon careers thus far. Zane Simon: The thing with Krylov is that most of the time he has to have a significant wrestling advantage to win fights. Standing, Krylov can be violent and surprising, but usually just in short bursts on his way inside, and often with a lot of mess and a lack of defense. We’ve seen a small sample size, but I think Fiorot poses as much as a threat as some of the women who were able to outlast and outpoint Chookagian. Zane Simon: If I had to guess here, my bet would be that Dariush starts this fight with a really good blitzing round of offense, both men find success in the scramble come round 2, and Gamrot really makes his gas tank count in round 3 to close out the fight. She’s got the size and strength to trouble Chookagian, but her ability to finish fights has still been dictated much more by volume and persistence than it has one-shot power, and few fighters trade in volume and persistence like Chookagian does. The method I’m testing with these picks is all about win percentage, though, and due to Oliveira’s wobbles earlier on in his career (which I think are more of a benefit than a detriment to who he is as a fighter) it will be Makhachev who gets the pick here. I think injuries and matchmaking may have conspired to close the window on Dariush’s chances of achieving more than he has to date. Beneil Dariush, though more tested in the UFC, has four losses and a draw on his record. As dangerous and technical a grappler as Oliveira is, his willingness to give up position means that confident takedown artists who can survive in his guard, tend to get all the time they want there. For all the Khabib comparisons and talk about smeshing people, Makhachev is actually far more patient and more methodical in his approach than his teammate, especially on the ground. Anton Tabuena: I think this is one of the most intriguing title fights in a long time, with two insane win streaks, and two of the most technical and well rounded fighters right now.

Plus, the potential for human interference or corruption.” Hardy’s gripe with the UFC 280 scales came just before Alexander Volkanovski – who was the back-up fighter for the lightweight title fight – admitted he was surprised to hear Oliveira and Makhachev both made weight. Old analog scales, traveled around the world.
We look ahead to UFC 280 with some predictions for the fights including Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev and Petr Yan vs Sean O'Malley.
I believe he’s destined for the top and will grind his way to the biggest victory of his UFC career on Saturday night. The 33-year-old is a veteran of the 125lb landscape heading into the 16th fight of her lengthy UFC career – but Chookagian has only challenged for UFC gold on one occasion previously. Book your seat now for UFC 280, exclusively live on Saturday 22 October from 5pm on BT Sport Box Office. He’ll need to be careful on the mat though with O’Malley an accomplished jiu-jitsu brown belt despite rarely relying on his grappling over the course of his UFC career to date. Yan’s boxing might well be the most polished attribute of his skillset but he remains one of the most well-rounded fighters in the promotion and could look to utilise takedowns in order to negate O’Malley’s physical advantage. A black belt under the tutelage of his coach and former UFC champion Matt Serra, Sterling is an opportunist who uses his athleticism to take advantage of chaotic scrambles for position. However, I believe experience could be the key to success at UFC 280 with Oliveira by far the more battle-tested of the two men having fought against the best of the best for a number of years now. Also a talented grappler – albeit Division III, not the same calibre as Dillashaw – Sterling has found his success in the UFC thanks to an uncanny ability to find a way to his opponent’s back. [TJ Dillashaw](https://www.bt.com/sport/ufc/fighters/tj-dillashaw) is the perfect opponent to test him given the credentials of his challenger on Saturday night. To state the obvious, this fight will be won and lost in the battle for supremacy on the ground; if Makhachev is as good as those in his corner have relentlessly claimed, he should be able to control Oliveira from top position and inflict some serious damage on a man who cuts notoriously easily. His ability to control the contest on the ground will be tested to its limits against Oliveira however, with the 33-year-old Brazilian the most prolific submission artist in UFC history with 16 finishes to his name. [Charles Oliveira](https://www.bt.com/sport/ufc/fighters/charles-oliveira) against the most dominant contender in the division, [Islam Makhachev](https://www.bt.com/sport/ufc/fighters/islam-makhachev), in a battle that could turn out any which way of a million possibilities.

The Sporting News breaks down the betting lines for the UFC 280 co-main event showdown between TJ Dillashaw and UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
There may be a temptation to bet on Sterling to submit Dillashaw at +500, but the former champion has never been submitted in his MMA career. He'll likely make it to the final bell but will have to watch as Sterling has his hand raised in victory. Sterling isn’t a refined striker by any means, but his purpose for striking is to ensure his opponent's hands are always moving and remain open for the takedown. Dillashaw may be a better striker, but Sterling perhaps has the most underrated grappling in the UFC. Dillashaw has won the title on two occasions: a stunning upset against Renan Barao in 2015 and a stoppage of rival Cody Garbrandt in 2017. Aljamain Sterling may be one of the most disrespected champions on the roster.

Former UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw is confident he'll once again have gold around his waist after facing Aljamain Sterling.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to fight very much in the last four years and I still hold most of the records in the UFC at bantamweight. It doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be fearful of him but all that aside he’s not that much of a threat.” Sterling entered that bout as a +350 underdog but used his superior wrestling skills to get his Russian opponent to the mat for ground-and-pound and submission attempts. “You’re praising the guy who got caught and saying that he did it the right way and did it like a man. “I know plenty of athletes that pay a little fine and miss a couple games. “Even though I’m 36, I’m able to hold my own and continue to evolve,” he said. “I came back and fought at the Apex, which was cool and an easy way to get back into it but I enjoy this,” he told The Athletic this week. That’s a long time, a long part of my career, especially at the age that I was at. I don’t get it and I think it’s a very odd thing to say.” Dillashaw admitted to the use of the banned substances — which aided him as he cut down to the 125-pound limit to face then-flyweight champion Henry Cejudo in Jan. After serving a two-year suspension following a positive test for recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), he returned in July 2021 for a fight with Cory Sandhagen at the UFC Apex — with limited fans in attendance. Dillashaw isn’t quite sure what to expect when he makes the walk to the cage on Saturday against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.

Even at that steep projection, the market points me toward the goes-the-distance prop (+320 at [FanDuel](https://www.actionnetwork.com/online-sports-betting/reviews/fanduel)) or the Over on Rounds. [total](https://www.actionnetwork.com/education/over-under-total), despite an initial lean to the under. I projected this lightweight fight to end inside the distance 76% of the time (-311 implied) compared to a divisional average of 51%. I would want +179 (35.8% implied) or better to back “Do Bronx” at a 2% edge compared to my projection. Makhachev’s straightforward, singularly focused plan of attack is the foil to that chaos. And in that chaos, he remains calm, technical and poised to finish. And there could be opportunities where the ex-champ can create a scramble and snatch Makhachev’s back or neck in those exchanges. Just one of his past 18 fights (against Tony Ferguson at UFC 256) went to the judges; Oliveira typically has a kill-or-be-killed style. Still, I expect Makhachev to get this fight to the ground eventually. Oliveira is a world-class jiu-jitsu practitioner and comfortable fighting from his back, but he can’t spend too much time there. He rarely hangs out within his opponents’ striking range and misses opportunities to let his hands go. He’ll hope to reclaim the belt previously owned by his friend, training partner and now coach, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Yan has the patience to avoid recklessness and the power to make O'Malley wither. And provided he can hurt Yan enough early to try and activate the former champion's desperate want to avoid a three-fight losing skid, O'Malley just might be able to line him up with the type of explosion which could end the fight. On the ground Makhachev might be able to maul the Brazilian, but he has to be careful for every second to not get caught in a submission. Yan Expect Sterling and Dillashaw to play for points before Sterling eventually gets the takedown and takes over. Yan vs. Perhaps Makhachev presents the answer in the form of a strategic takedown game and stifling top control. Oliveira Oliveira vs. Sterling vs. Dillashaw is back after a year away because of injury and also not too far away from a two-year drug suspension that cost him the title. Elsewhere on the card, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling looks to continue his incredible run when he takes on former champ TJ Dillashaw in the co-main event.

Petr Yan and Sean O'Malley had their final staredown for their anticipated UFC 280 showdown at ceremonial weigh-ins.
UFC 280 takes place Saturday at Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The former champion and surging contender meet in a key bantamweight contest. [Petr Yan](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/tag/petr-yan) and [Sean O'Malley](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/tag/sean-omalley) had the final staredown for their highly anticipated [UFC 280](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/events/ufc-280-abu-dhabi) showdown at Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins.
Sean O'Malley has been lauded as the potential next generation superstar for the UFC, but he must overcome his toughest test in the returning former ...
Considering his popularity and the prospect of having a DWCS alum potentially when the world title ahead of another season next summer, it is difficult to see O’Malley not get the title shot with any sort of victory on Saturday. Though not conductive to another high volume assault as per his usual, a conservative approach that sees less powerful combinations as to avoid staying in the pocket is expected to be O’Malley’s most effective route to a victory assuming he can’t stop the notoriously tenacious Yan. His typical approach that sees him seemingly eschew efficient fighting in favor of a potential highlight reel finish is one that is has largely been expected to change as he takes on tougher competition. However, he has publicly stated that he is not interested in pursuing the elite unless he is compensated as such. The show has become the premiere place for prospects around the world who wish to enter the big show and the UFC proudly points to O’Malley as an example of the heights one can reach through the platform of DWCS. Since arriving to the UFC as a 22 year-old in 2017 through Dana White’s Contender Series, O’Malley has been groomed as the next great prospect of the promotion.
Sean Zerillo breaks down Saturday afternoon's UFC 280 pay-per-view card, including his analysis, bets and model projections for all 12 fights.
Oliveira to win inside the distance (projected +209, listed +200) is my official pick on the fight. I projected this lightweight fight to end inside the distance 76% of the time (-311 implied) compared to a divisional average of 51%. I would want +179 (35.8% implied) or better to back “Do Bronx” at a 2% edge compared to my projection. 90% of Oliveira’s career fights, including 17 of his past 18 and 10 of the 11 wins on his current streak, have ended inside the distance. I would bet Rosa here, up to about -369 (78.7% implied) at a 2% edge compared to my number. 1 contender to face the winner of Makhachev and Oliveira. He hasn’t fought anyone near this level of competition and may struggle to make the proper adjustments. Chookagian has all the tools to keep this fight competitive and potentially win it. He should have a clear grappling advantage against Muradov, and I expect him to have success landing takedowns. Oezdemir has gotten wobbled more easily in recent fights, so I suspect Krylov may find a chance to finish on the feet against a fighter who is incredibly difficult to take down. Mokaev is a grinding wrestler who can keep a pace and wear on his opponents, but he should have an opportunity to find Gordon’s chin. ET) on ESPN+ and ESPNNews.
