The Spanish giants had cruised into a three-goal half-time lead courtesy of Karim Benzema’s double and a Ronaldo strike before the latter netted twice more early in the second period to make it three goals in just 11 minutes either side of the interval. Blackburn saved complete embarrassment with a comfortable victory over Rosenborg in their final fixture. Robert Lewandowski scored four times, converting a penalty on 53 minutes to double Bayern’s lead from the first half. Ronaldo became the first player to score more than 10 goals in the group stages with his 11 in six games. Lewandowski remarkably scored three goals in a devastating spell of 10 minutes and 22 seconds to kill this tie. Only Messi and Luiz Adriano have scored five goals in a single match. What Liverpool need to do against Ajax and potentially Napoli to qualify from group and reach Champions League knockout stage.

There is, of course, still a chance Liverpool could yet lift themselves above leaders Napoli over the final two group games. Should Liverpool lose at home to Napoli next week and Ajax win at Rangers, it would leave both teams on nine points. A single-goal loss would negate the Reds' home win over Ajax and put the duo level on head-to-head record. However, it would still require a huge turnaround in goal difference to eliminate the Reds.
