Aston Villa have confirmed the appointment of Unai Emery as their new manager from Villarreal, following the sacking of Steven Gerrard.

Last season Villarreal enjoyed a fine run in the Champions League, with Emery leading them to the semi-finals by beating Juventus and Bayern Munich, before they came unstuck against Liverpool. The appointment of Emery by the billionaire owners, Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris, is a considerable coup and emphasises their ambition to return Villa to European competition. Emery’s first game in charge will be at home to Manchester United on 6 November. Emery will take over from 1 November after his work permit formalities are completed, meaning Villa’s caretaker manager, Aaron Danks, will remain in charge for the visit to Newcastle on Saturday. He was brilliant at Valencia, always getting them into the Champions League places. He's had a lot of success with teams just below the elite, almost fighting against the biggest clubs. Emery's previous managerial spell in the Premier League ended three years ago when he was sacked by Arsenal. The Spaniard will hold a farewell press conference with Villarreal on Tuesday. He joined the club in the summer of 2020 and led them to glory in the Europa League - at United's expense - at the end of his first season.
