Heilbron says, “The key to accessing these opportunities is affordable and hassle-free funding that lets your retail business bulk buy stock at discounted rates, invest in technology or revamp your store. Even adding a bistro or an interactive product display can attract customers and get them to linger. A funding loan of R700,000 to pay for a diesel consignment over a 90-day repayment period ahead of the estimated diesel price hike in November, to be settled in the first 30 days, can equate to a profit of around R26,000 after finance charges. Retailers should be present where the customer is, offering choices to buy online-pickup instore, curb-side pickup and in-store shopping. South African consumers and retailers have been warned to brace themselves for yet more fuel price increases in November. They can use predictive analytics to forecast which products will be in demand by season.

Fuel price: Transporters hike fares in Calabar - Punch Newspapers (The Punch)

Commercial transport operators in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, have increased their fares by about 100 percent.

Cab drivers also charged N100 for a trip of N50, saying they cannot buy fuel for N200 per litre and still charge the old fare. Also, tricycle operators now collect N100 for a trip from Goldie to Watt market rather than the N50 they hitherto collected from commuters. For instance, a trip from Eta Agbor to Marian and Mobil which attracted a fee N100 before has now increased N150.

This is followed by food products, beverages, and tobacco products – increasing by 12.1% year-on-year. The BER noted that while the view that South Africa’s headline CPI inflation peaked in July, the message from the latest PPI data, the fuel price hikes (51c/litre for petrol and a hefty R1.43 for diesel) this week, as well as recent corporate commentary, supports an outlook for CPI to remain sticky above 7% year-on-year for the next several months. This means that food producers are likely to adjust prices to accommodate the rising cost of fuel – especially the agricultural industry, as fuel accounts for 13% of its input costs, said chief economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa Wandile Sihlobo. This concern over food prices has been exacerbated by the fact that the cost of diesel – a primary input for manufacturing, agriculture, and trucking – would increase to over While the group noted that local prices had been kept lower than international markets due to local surplus production, it warned that under a scenario where South Africa does not produce surpluses of these crops, prices would rise to import parity – this would lead to price increases of at least 30%. Of these indicators, a concern is that manufactured food products increased by a higher-than-expected 1.3% month-on-month in September after a 1% rise in August, the BER said, which suggests that there is more pressure to come on consumer food prices.

This is significant because diesel is used in most trucks that freight goods across the country. The biggest pain, however, comes for owners of diesel vehicles. “Every time it increases, it increases the cost of moving the goods through South Africa. This extends to other transporters as well, with public transport also heavily impacted by the increases.

Here's what you'll pay for fuel from Wednesday, November 2 (Independent Online)

The price of petrol and diesel are going up on November 2. Let's take a closer look at what's happening, and how much more you'll pay per tank from ...

The tank price will vary between outlets as diesel is unregulated, but expect to pay somewhat more than the wholesale prices of R25.11 (coast) and (R25.74) inland for 50ppm. Brent Crude oil prices also increased earlier in October after the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) agreed on its biggest production cut since the pandemic. If you put 35 litres into the fuel tank of a small car like the Volkswagen Polo (with a 40 litre tank that you’re presumably not going to empty), then expect to pay R17.85 more per tank from November. The local currency depreciated from an average of R17.56 in September to R18.11 in October, according to data released by Nedbank. Diesel will see much steeper increases, of R1.43 (500ppm) and R1.44 (50ppm), making this economic lifeblood more expensive than it has ever been. Putting 70 litres into the 80 litre tanks will cost an extra R100.

It is to be noted here that the federal government has the power to levy a maximum of Rs50 levy on petrol. The federal government has deprived the citizens of relief in the petrol price by not passing the slump in global rates to the users, instead using it to increase the levy on petrol by Rs2.74 to Rs50 per litre. It merits a mention here that if the levy was not increased, relief in the petrol price could have been passed on to the people.

Petrol price hike: Here's what it'll cost for a full tank (Citizen)

While the November fuel price hike won't hurt owners of petrol cars that much, owners of big diesel cars are in for a nasty surprise.

The oil-burning Prado can take 150 litres of diesel by virtue of its 87-litre tank and 63-litre reserve tank and will cost R216 more to fill. Equipped with a 57-litre tank, the X-Trail will cost R82.08 more to fill with 50ppm diesel from Wednesday. The cost for every kilometre works out to R1.09. Every kilometre works out to R2.01. From today, it will cost R22.95 more to fill its 45-litre tank from completely empty with 93 octane. We used the recommended diesel price of R25.49 per litre for 50ppm, although the price varies between fuel stations. Depending on what car you drive, you might have to fork out almost R4 000 for filling up from completely empty. The X-Trail is capable of a range of 1 132km according to Nissan’s claimed fuel consumption of 5.3L/100km, which will result in a cost of R1.35 per kilometre. Based on fuel economy of 7.9L/100km, the bakkie is able to cover 962km on a single tank. The Chinese carmaker claims the Jolion uses 7.5 litres of petrol for every 100km, which works out to a range of 760km. As this popular little city slicker’s 35-litre petrol is one of the smaller ones around, it will only cost R17.85 more to fill it with 93 octane petrol from empty from today. With the diesel price rising to well over R25 per litre, owners of big oil-burning bakkies and SUVs will dread a visit to the fuel station.
