Our Premature Evaluation of the rappers' new collaborative album.
For the first time in a while, I’m having a good time listening to a new Drake album. The best thing about Her Loss is that Drake is having fun. And now Her Loss arrives in the wake of tragedy, a few days after the [murder](https://www.stereogum.com/2204705/takeoff-shot-dead-at-28/news/) of Drake’s former tourmate and collaborator Takeoff. The loss of Takeoff hangs over a few Her Loss moments. [What A Time To Be Alive](https://www.stereogum.com/1832257/premature-evaluation-drake-future-what-a-time-to-be-alive/reviews/premature-evaluation/) — when Drake went into Future’s zone, living in the studio in Atlanta for a few days and working with all Future’s favorite producers. (I like this one: “Pink slip in the glove for the ownership/ Limping with the .30 on like a broke hip/ Red flag, giving blood on some donor shit/ All the opps get a bullet on some Oprah shit.”) Savage is on this album for gravitas and because his presence helps get Drake into rapper mode. Later on, Drake deadpans the most Drake line he’s written in years: “I’m a gentleman, I’m generous/ I blow a half a million on you hoes, I’m a feminist.” Hand it to the guy: That’s terrible, but it’s hilarious, too. The timing of Her Loss is also regrettable. On the opener “Rich Flex,” Drake makes it clear that he’s in rapper mode now. On “Jimmy Cooks,” he put Drake in the ground. Drake and 21 Savage worked together a few more times — the unreleased leak “Issa,” 2020’s “Mr. That year, Savage had the world thinking that Drake had bought him a Ferrari for his birthday.
Drake is back on his game with 'Her Loss,' which has levity where that album had sulking. 21 Savage is employed far less often but makes for a edgy, ...
There are fleeting exceptions, as with “3AM on Glenwood,” a 21 Savage solo song that is piercing in its honesty; elsewhere, on “Spin Bout U,” Drake finally reveals his stance on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Though not without its missteps, “Her Loss” leaves the unshakable impression that Drake, in 2022, is doing what inspires him rather than pandering. The nearly seven-minute “Hours in Silence” enlists 21 for a smooth, concise bridge where a traditional verse might have knocked the song off its axis; Drake’s extended outro is hypnotizing in the same way much of “Take Care’s” back half was. [Drake](https://variety.com/t/drake/) declares a few minutes into “Her Loss,” his collaborative album with [21 Savage](https://variety.com/t/21-savage/). This imbalance on its face might suggest a lack of synergy; in practice, though, 21 Savage is a more natural collaborator for Drake than Future, whose stylistic tendencies often defined the song at the outset, inviting Drake to descend into hollow mimicry. If it seems like all of this so far is treating 21 Savage like an afterthought, it’s because his role on “Her Loss” is far more supporting than lead.
