Goals from Miguel Almiron, Chris Wood, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes gave the Magpies what Sunday's 4-1 score suggests was an easy win against a Southampton ...
Chris Wood – Did what he does best for the second 45 after replacing Wilson, and got his goal when turning inside the box and finding the far corner of the net. Wilson was unwell in the week and came off at half time for Wood. Callum Wilson – Isolated at times but was strong enough to aid Almiron with the opener. A steady performance and worked well with Almiron down the right, although he stepped up for the Saints consolation and was left stranded. Bruno Guimaraes – Eventually got into the game and shut out the Southampton service to Adams. Joe Willock – Had a steady game and exploited the space when Saints opened up midway through the second half, to score the third. Had a handle on Adams and the drifting Lavia too. Che Adams – Missed a sitter of a chance on the counter attack early in the second half. But he was too often pegged back by the Newcastle midfield and spent much of the second half chasing the game. Stuart Armstrong – Bustling in the middle of midfield, Armstrong carved out a golden chance for Elyounoussi in first-half stoppage time. Ainsley Maitland-Niles – Had a quiet start to the game and was shunted to right-back following Larios’ injury. Armel Bella-Kotchap – The calmer head in the heart of defence but, like Salisu, was tested beyond his limits when Wood came into the fray.
