“The reality is that up to 8 stages of load shedding can be implemented when the need has arisen, just as it has now. “The national electricity crisis committee established by the president to fast-track issues related to Eskom has only had one public engagement, are they still working? “The need to preserve generation is most likely an attempt to avert Stage 8 or more load shedding. Diesel needs to be replenished as does the pumped storage. Unfortunately this will carry on for at least a year with an added risk of load shedding,” Mantshantsha said. What could be more important than our electricity crisis?” Mashele said.

These units are only expected to be fully operational again in 2024. However, neither of these options is available. Eskom will publish a full statement in due course.” Smartphone users can also download the app EskomSePush to receive push notifications when load shedding is implemented, as well as the times the area you are in will be off. Economists, analysts, experts and Eskom itself have warned South Africans to prepare for prolonged periods of load shedding at higher stages for the foreseeable future. For access to other load shedding schedules, Eskom has made them available on Eskom’s load shedding forecast for the year ahead shows that the group either has to keep unplanned outages below 13,000MW or have billions of rands more to spend on diesel to keep load shedding at bay – or, at the very least, at low stages. For people living in the major metros, load shedding schedules are available here: The plan was to initially de-escalate load shedding from stage 4 on the weekend to stage 2 by Wednesday, but instability and breakdowns on the grid ended up pushing the group to extend stage 3 load shedding for longer than intended. As the group prepares to contend with all its lost energy capacity, the last few weeks and months have shown that it cannot reliably keep its on load capacity available. This will pull 920MW of power from the grid, and it will be offline for at least six months. “Stage 6 load shedding will be implemented from 12h00 until further notice,” the group said.

That was to keep up with the peak demand of 28,843MW while ensuring there was a safe buffer to avoid destabilising the grid. To pretend that it’s a few isolated incidents is not substantiated by the facts. Mantashe has launched repeated attacks on De Ruyter in recent months, and previously told News24 that De Ruyter should be replaced with someone who has technical capabilities. The minister said Eskom simply had to fix its operational problems. It all links together in quite sophisticated networks that steal billions of rands from Eskom every year." With the signing on of the 13 new sustainable power projects, Mantashe said 6 800MW of additional power had been brought on to the grid during his tenure as mining and energy minister. "Eskom, by not attending to load shedding, is actively agitating for the overthrow of the state", Mantashe said in Johannesburg.

Eskom's desperate scramble to avoid Stage 7 (Creamer Media's Engineering News)

Not only will Eskom be without 50% of Koeberg's capacity for 12 months - equal to almost one stage of load shedding – it was also using the last of its diesel held for emergencies on Wednesday evening. "I am afraid that what we are starting to see now is that the power stations are taking too much strain and can't manage. The worst-case scenario modeled an outage of 16 000 MW, which would necessitate a minimum of Stage 3 load shedding as the new normal. Teams from international contractors are already on site and there is a looming deadline of 2024 for Eskom to complete the replacement of the steam generators to satisfy the regulator to license the extension of life by 20 years. This meant it had less than 22 000 MW available to meet demand of around 27 000 MW. But a decision to shift the outage out by a few days was made in the evening after Eskom lost an additional two units, including one from Medupi.

Eskom holds off shutting down Koeberg – but not for long (BusinessTech)

Power utility Eskom said that it has delayed its plan to take unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station offline to later on Thursday.

But, at best, these new projects are 18 months away from adding power to the grid, not accounting for any crises, missteps or interference along the way. The elevated levels of load shedding come just as the group was planning to take Koeberg Unit 1 offline for refurbishment and maintenance. These units may be offline until the end of 2023 to mid-2024, the group warned. Oberholzer has hammered the point that the only way to resolve load shedding in South Africa is to build new capacity to take the strain off the overloaded and ageing power stations in its fleet. Eskom’s load shedding forecast for the next year indicates that the power utility needs to keep unplanned outages or breakdowns below 13,000MW to stave off the worst of load shedding – however, the group has been unable to keep outages below 16,000MW, which represents its ‘worst case scenario’ in the plan. Koeberg Unit 1 is the most reliable generating unit in the Eskom fleet, the group previously said, and it contributes close to 1,000MW – equal to one stage of load shedding – to the national grid.

Eskom’s grid operates at a frequency of 50Hz — or 50 cycles per second. Yelland said the system’s frequency and the frequency’s rate of change — and not the load-shedding stage — indicated the likelihood of a blackout. [previously said](https://mybroadband.co.za/news/energy/441570-what-a-total-eskom-power-blackout-in-south-africa-would-look-like.html) that it would take a week or longer to get the grid back online after a total blackout, which could come at a disastrous cost to the economy. “It is when the frequency is dropping and not returning to 50Hz that you can say if that situation persists, then a national blackout may occur.” Yelland said it was important to understand the stage of load-shedding was not necessarily a direct indication of the proximity to a national blackout. “The fact that we have a particular stage of load-shedding for some hours or days actually indicates that supply and demand have been brought back into balance by this load-shedding, which will avert any possibility of a national blackout,” Yelland said.
