Trevor Noah: Who will take over The Daily Show? (BBC News)

Trevor Noah will leave big shoes to fill at the helm of the beloved late-night satirical show.

Last year, he quietly launched a travelling stand-up show: The Only Former US Senator Currently on Tour Tour. "There's a dearth of female representation in late-night," she said. The comedian and author has certainly had some practice. Hasan Minhaj, the 37-year-old comedian from Davis, California, is no stranger to The Daily Show. One episode covering the story of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi was removed from Netflix in Saudi Arabia. While Minhaj has not yet commented on his role as guest host, he may very well have Noah's vote.

Limiting the arsenal of bits to Donald Trump, white Americans, and Karens will hardly make a dent in the marketplace. Still, the next permanent host will inherit a show of low standards. The backlash is too grave. The list of guest hosts is rather benign and predictable. Comedy Central will air the final episode of “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” on Thursday. The network has yet to name a full-time replacement host.

In his final signoff as 'The Daily Show' host, an emotional Trevor Noah took a few minutes to thank the fans and Black women who shaped his life.

“They are a lot of the reasons that I’m here.” “Black people understand how hard it is when things go bad,” Noah added. “When things go bad, Black people know that it gets worse for them. “Every seat that has ever been filled to watch something that I’m doing, I always appreciate ’cause I know the empty seat that sits behind it, so thank you,” he continued. “I remember when we started the show, we couldn’t get enough people to fill an audience.” Noah even thanked the people who critiqued his show or hate-watched it. Who do you think has shaped me, nourished me, informed me? “Who do you think teaches me? He then switched his focus and gave a special shoutout to Black women. “If you truly want to know what to do or how to do it, or maybe the best way or the most equitable way, talk to Black women,” Noah said. He went on to say that’s how comedy is, too. “Thank you to the people who watch, the people who share the clips, everyone who’s had an opinion, everyone who’s been kind enough and gracious enough.”

When “Daily” returns in mid-January, it will rely on a shifting group of guest hosts and correspondents who will lead each evening in duos and trios. Before any of that gets underway, Noah wrapped his tenure on the program. He told the crowd Thursday that they should be “celebrating” his departure, rather than bemoaning it. But the bulk of the evening belonged to Noah, who used the show’s last segment to try and make sense of a surreal seven-year journey during which he was plucked from near-obscurity in the U.S.

The South African comedian who replaced Jon Stewart in 2015 ended his seven year run on the Comedy Central program Thursday. Here's how it went down.

Instead of a big-name guest to finish out, his final conversation at “The Daily Show” desk was with friend and fellow comedian Neal Brennan. Noah give each of “The Daily Show” correspondents — Roy Wood, Jr., Desi Lydic, Ronnie Chieng, Michael Costa and Dulcé Sloan, along with contributor Jordan Klepper — a chance to poke fun at the host one more time. ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel — in his 19th season — is the longest-running late night host. (Noah, a rabid Liverpool fan, began hugging stage crew members when the Rodgers and Hammerstein tune played). Noah brought a more global view to the program (early in his run he memorably made historically biting comparisons of Donald Trump to African dictators). “Who do you think shaped me, nourished me and formed me from my mom, my gram, my aunt — all these Black women in my life. “It was a wild journey,” Noah said on his show. Younger viewers likely got to know Noah through social media sharing of his clips. Being Black and not from the U.S. ... Black women can’t afford to f— around and find out. The comedian was not widely known in the U.S. Nine months later he became the program’s third host as Stewart moved on.

"When I look at this now, I don't take it for granted, ever," he said, looking at the masked crowd. "They're a lot of the reason that I'm here." I still think it was a crazy choice, this random African," said Noah, who hails from South Africa.

Behind the Scenes of Trevor Noah's Star-Studded 'Daily Show ... (Rolling Stone)

In his final 'Daily Show' appearance, South African comedian Trevor Noah bid his audience farewell for now, not forever.

While later years would see Noah criticized for his tendency to “just talk it out as humans” during some tense political situations, the Daily Show host charted the show from a global perspective, allowing Noah to imbue his comedy with an earnest intent to see the good in others. [The Daily Show](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/daily-show-2023-guest-hosts-sarah-silverman-hasan-minhaj-al-franken-1234642381/) is hosted by a rotating list of guests, Noah will embark on a 28-city North American [stand-up tour](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/trevor-noah-2023-stand-up-tour-off-the-record-1234630420/). “You turned The Daily Show into The Breakfast Club.” There were more thank-you’s than punchlines, and even a moment where Noah pushed everything aside to thank Black women for their support and knowledge. “Part of the reason I did it that way is because I didn’t want anybody to be the person who then tells somebody else, who then tells somebody else, who then tells somebody else,” Noah told [The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/inside-trevor-noahs-decision-to-leave-the-daily-show-1235265367/). But Noah took the praise and the thanks with aplomb, continually redirecting the attention toward the audience and the executives in the audience who first chose him. “[You] brought diversity to late night,” he said, presenting Noah with his *literal* flowers. While the big question on everyone’s mind is what Noah is doing next, the show took a surprising surface-level look back on Noah’s path from unknown newcomer to beloved (and somewhat divisive) public figure. But for [Trevor Noah](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/trevor-noah-internet-little-mermaid-black-daily-show-1234594473/), who stepped behind the Daily Show desk for the last time as host on Thursday night, you say goodbye with a party — and a thank you.
