Regardless of the songs that did not live up to the high expectations that SZA sets for her music, the experimentation is commendable, using a vast range of featured artists such as Travis Scott and Phoebe Bridgers, while venturing past the typical R&B that the singer is known for. The songs such as “Conceited,” “Gone Girl” and “Smoking on My Ex Pack” caught a glimpse of the confident, sexy SZA that fans are so familiar with. The self-assurance lyrics such as, “He’s screamin’ get back together, I’m screamin’ back of the bus” in “Smoking on My Ex Pack” is the ultimate revenge, better off without, independent anthem. SZA shows the deepest parts of her self-doubt in these songs — a feat that artists rarely can do without the feeling of superficiality. The highs of the album left the office feeling on top of the world. 9, SZA brought us back to the excitement of listening to her new album after waiting five years since “Ctrl.” The office was not disappointed.

The connection runs deeper when you realize both albums play with a sonic switchup at the exact halfway point, down to the second – this one does so with a brief but effective feature from none other than Phoebe Bridgers on “Ghost In The Machine.” Still, the wildest part of the track has to be SZA’s sudden tangent about artificial intelligence, something that’s clearly been on her mind. Speaking of Lizzo, SZA has her own track called “Special” on SOS, and it’s certainly a standout. The unfurling of the songs on 'SOS' feels as lost as SZA sounds on them — but that might just be the point.

In the end, the track is a tragedy that by its final line will make you wonder how SZA can generate such devastation from such simplicity:“I just killed my ex/ I still love him though/ Rather be in hell than alone.” It’s all to say that this is yet another style we haven’t heard from SZA before, but she executes it beautifully by contrasting its perhaps more elementary, strummy melody with some truly heinous, spectacular lyrics.
