'The saga is not yet over': Opposition parties react to Phala Phala ... (Eyewitness News)

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, John Steenhuisen, said that the vote made a mockery of President Cyril Ramaphosa's aim to renew the ANC.

"He will have to re-earn the trust of South Africans. "While we have to subject ourselves to the democratic processes and accept Parliament's vote, the saga is not yet over. This is central to holding our highest public office bearers to account for their actions." "We are not sure whether they go cold feet when they saw those around them but we tried. • The president would have been given ample opportunity to state his case, to point to the deficiencies of the report, instead the ANC have simply shut this down to prevent any further progress on it."

The National Assembly speaker has declined opposition requests to reconsider her decision to not allow a secret ballot.

“The speaker has also noted concerns about potential ‘vote buying’, and it was her view that this could be facilitated by a cloud of secrecy. She stressed the importance of ensuring an environment of accountability while maintaining transparency and openness. The ANC has 230 MPs while all other opposition parties have a combined 170.

ANC Integrity Commission defers its own Phala Phala report to ... (BizNews)

The ANC's Integrity Commission has been sitting on its report regarding Cyril Ramaphosa's Phala Phala scandal, and the wait continues.

Under rules approved in July, any ANC member that the integrity committee has recommended should step aside is barred from running for party leadership positions. The quagmire for the ANC is that both of its top contenders to lead the party face potential sanction from its Integrity Commission. Ramaphosa and Mkhize are running against each other for leadership of the party at a five-yearly conference that begins on Dec. The decision to defer consideration of the reports was taken by the African National Congress’s National Executive Committee at a meeting on Friday, party spokesman Pule Mabe said. And, that’s if the party’s Integrity Commission finds that the incident in which a person is accused of wrongdoing has brought the ANC into disrepute. It’s unsurprising then that the ANC has kicked the reports on these two individuals down the road to the national conference, as you can imagine the effluent storm that would envelop the governing party should both be disqualified from standing.

“This predictable outcome puts an end to the impeachment proceedings,” said Melanie Verwoerd, an independent political analyst and former ANC lawmaker. While Ramaphosa initially contemplated resigning, he later backtracked and said he will challenge the panel’s findings in court on the basis that they’re legally flawed. The police are also investigating the matter, and under ANC rules, he’ll have to resign if he’s criminally charged. “The president has consistently stated his commitment to due process.” Lawmakers from all the main opposition parties voted in favor of adopting the report. The findings were rejected by 214 legislators in the 400-member National Assembly on Tuesday, scuppering a potential impeachment inquiry.

Phala Phala Report vote shatters myth of ANC renewal - John ... (Politicsweb)

DA Leader says President has done everything in his power to avoid answering questions truthfully about money.

Not under this president who rode in majestically on the promise of a new dawn and pledged to do things differently. That is the test before this house today. An inquiry that must be undertaken by a committee of this Assembly. We’re not voting to find a president innocent or guilty of an impeachable offence. We’re not weighing up evidence to reach a verdict. Money that you claim was nothing but a simple misunderstanding - a bit of Christmas day cash buffalo shopping combined with some lax admin and bookkeeping. And this wasn’t some noble sacrifice in service of your country. And to tackle them, we need a president with both hands on the wheel, both eyes on the road ahead, and his head in the game And it was only when your ANC comrades reminded you how your party normally deals with these inconveniences - how easily the ANC abuses its majority in this house to crush any notion of accountability - that you then decided to cancel your resignation. That is how damaging the Phala Phala truth is to you personally, and to your party. The ANC we saw in the House today is the same ANC that leapt to the defense of the corrupt former President Jacob Zuma in half a dozen Motions of No Confidence as well as an Impeachment vote. Today South Africans were left in no doubt that the presidency of Cyril Ramaphosa is no different to the presidency of Jacob Zuma, and that both men would not hesitate to damage and weaken Parliament in order to evade scrutiny and the law.
