Charcot-Marie-Tooth study to get $250K grant (Labiotech.eu)

The MDA and CMTRF have announced joint funding for a study on restoring membrane trafficking in CMT neuropathies with aberrant myelin.

In this project, researchers will further explore this mechanism of relevance in cell biology and test whether pharmacological and/or genetic modulation of these pathways can represent an effective strategy for the therapy of CMT4B with aberrant myelin. Among CMT neuropathies, CMT4B1 is a very severe demyelinating neuropathy with childhood onset, characterized by myelin outfoldings, redundant loops of myelin in the nerve that degenerate causing axonal problems. This will be a three-year study, with the grant totaling $263,450.

Escambia Children's Trust delays $4.3M in grants after public outcry ... (Pensacola News Journal)

Community members filled the house, with some questioning whether the grants were going to established organizations that regularly receive funding.

"It's up to the sheriff to do what he wants with those dollars. Another $152,000 would have gone to a virtual reality training simulator, and $190,000 going to the creation of a real-time crime center. Council member and School Board member Patty Hightower said the proposal could be brought back up for reconsideration at its next meeting. "The county funds the sheriff's office. He asked that setting a workshop be included in the motion to send back the proposals. Frydrychowicz added that full due diligence should be conducted on all 29 groups before a recommendation comes back to the full council. "I want us to be able to get some programs started so that the kids start getting the services," Greer said. The grant award would've been the Children's Trust's largest expenditure since its creation in a county-wide referendum in 2020. Woods' proposal passed in a 7-1 vote, with council member Melissa Sidoti voting no. A selection committee scored the proposals and recommended funding 18 organizations. "But then, as I look at what was awarded, it was always the same organizations that get money from every source," Lewis said. I hope this is not another taxpayer giveaway to agencies that are not even serving in the impoverished areas."

Chicken Off the Table for Poor South Africans After Prices Surge (Bloomberg)

Low-income earners are being forced to consume a high-carbohydrate diet.

A 378.9-rand ($22) bag of chicken in November equates to a fifth of spending on food for someone dependent on South Africa’s monthly old-age grant. Bloomberg’s Shisa Nyama Index shows that 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of frozen chicken portions -- sufficient to feed an average low-income family of seven for a month -- is the costliest item on their grocery list. Thoracic aortic aneurysm: Condition that killed football writer Grant ... (The Indian Express)

The American football writer Grant Wahl died last week after a catastrophic tear in a major blood vessel leading out of his heart, his family has said.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) page on Marfan syndrome describes it as a genetic condition that affects connective tissue and can damage the blood vessels and cause aneurysms of the aorta. An aortic aneurysm is a weakening and bulging in a portion of the aorta; “thoracic” refers to that section of the blood vessel that passes through the chest. The NYT report said doctors are exploring whether Wahl had Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that increases the risk of this type of aneurysm. According to a note by Johns Hopkins Medicine, aneurysms occur more often in the portion of the aorta that runs through the abdomen rather than the chest (causing what is called “abdominal aortic aneurysm”). The vessel may ultimately burst or separate, triggering a bleeding rush that can be life-threatening, and potentially lethal. As the aneurysm grows, it may produce a cough, shortness of breath or chest pain, the report said — some of which Wahl experienced while in Qatar.

Sports journalist Grant Wahl died of an aortic aneurysm: What is it? (The Hill)

The family of sportswriter Grant Wahl said a ruptured heart vessel caused his death — brought on by an undetected aneurysm.

Medical problems, genetic conditions, and trauma can cause the aorta’s walls to be damaged or weakened, and the force of blood pushing against these areas can lead to an aneurysm. He had complained about not feeling well in the days beforehand. Since vessels are the primary pathway for blood to the rest of the body, when one ruptures, it can be catastrophic. They should bring that information to their doctor’s attention,” Eric Isselbacher, a cardiologist with Massachusetts General in Boston, told WDAF. - Medical problems, genetic conditions, and trauma can cause the aorta’s walls to be damaged or weakened, and the force of blood pushing against these areas can lead to an aneurysm. - Heart specialists explain that an aneurysm is an expanding blood vessel that can eventually rupture.

Grant Wahl, Journalist Detained at World Cup for Wearing Rainbow ... (Metro Weekly)

Grant Wahl, a U.S. journalist who was previously detained for wearing a rainbow shirt at the World Cup, unexpectedly died at age 48.

“We will forever cherish the gift of his life; to share his company was our greatest love and source of joy.” “First and foremost, on behalf of myself and our family, I want to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of support, love, and sympathy from around the world,” Gounder wrote in a brief obituary reflecting on her husband’s life. The referee then picked up the flag and left it on the sideline, where it remained until a worker came to collect it. And yet it’s crucial we stay active and provide vital resources and information to both our local readers and the world. That medical examiner’s office later determined the cause of Wahl’s death to be a rupture of an ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium — also known as an accumulation of blood in the sac around his heart — which had gone undetected, Gounder wrote in a statement on Wah’s Substack. He has since said he regrets posting the video speculating about his brother’s death, but does not regret calling for transparency regarding the circumstances that led to it — especially given the threats Grant had received and his critical reporting on Qatar’s record of human rights. “One of the security guards told me they were just trying to protect me from fans inside who could harm me for wearing the shirt,” Wahl reported. The very decision to allow Qatar to host the World Cup despite its hostility towards human rights generally, and the LGBTQ community specifically, has been criticized by liberals and Western nations. Eventually, a security commander relented and allowed him to enter wearing the T-shirt. Guards said the shirt was “political” and not allowed in the stadium. Wahl reported that he had tested negative for COVID-19, and had received antibiotics and cough syrup to treat what was diagnosed as bronchitis. “Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote.

Aneurysms that are in the chest, such as an ascending aortic aneurysm, however, are generally not due to those typical risk factors and tend to be due to an abnormality of the aorta from birth or inherited conditions, he said.
