The Robben Island Museum (RMI) is set to host a cleansing ceremony and critical debate to mark the Reconciliation Day at Robben Island Museum on Friday.

Kuhn said that the event will be preceded by a cleansing ceremony taking place on the island on Thursday which covers “Cleansing of the soil and appeasing the grief and trauma of the ancestors and nominating the spear-bearer. “Some of the activities include prayers and petitions to release the ancestors’ spirits still in bondage on the island and a ceremony of washing of spears and banishing colonial and foreign claim over the island. “This will be an opportunity to reflect on the painful past and the transition into a brighter future, in shared space,” Kuhn said.

While most South Africans agree that the road to reconciliation must be pursued as a national objective, there are many obstacles that need to be addressed first. Unfortunately, a pattern has emerged whereby allegations of racism and discrimination are used to divert attention from the real challenges with which South Africans are struggling. Disclaimer: News24 encourages freedom of speech and the expression of diverse views. Irrespective of the meaning attached to the term, an overwhelming 72% of respondents agreed that "South Africans still need reconciliation." Inflammatory rhetoric such as that recently echoed by Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe and the myriad racist tirades of EFF Leader Julius Malema aims merely to divide ordinary citizens who generally have good relations with one another and sabotage any chance at reconciliation and national unity. According to the Barometer's findings, 39% of respondents associated reconciliation with "forgiveness", 31% with "peace", and 25% with "making amends" and "moving on."

Mandela Capture Site –KwaZulu-Natal · Constitution Hill, Gauteng · Apartheid Museum, Gauteng.

Marking the historic capture spot stands a sculpture of 50 individual steel rods that form a magnificent portrait of Mandela as you walk towards it along a path symbolising his long walk to freedom, equality, and justice.
