Champions Cup: Five takeaways from Bordeaux-Begles v Sharks as ... (planetrugby.com)

The Sharks secured a 19-16 victory over Bordeaux-Begles in their second Champions Cup fixture on Friday, with Curwin Bosch scoring 14 points on the night.

Still, it is an area in which most of the side is proficient. He gained good metres with his carries and won a turnover at the breakdown. Luckily there is one key factor in their game that continues to impress, the breakdown. However, he spoiled his opportunity this November when he was red-carded for his tackle on Luke Cowan-Dickie. In contrast, Bordeaux’s Champions Cup journey for this season is seemingly over. 🦈 The Sharks go two from two in the

I have no doubt they will give more than 100% and hopefully that will be good enough to get the result” White concluded. So, I think we got to either hold onto the ball as long as we can and not give it to them, which comes with the risk because if you don’t hold onto the ball with accuracy you can give them the ball and maybe concede penalties which makes it easy for them to enter into your 22,” Having to play in front of sold-out crowds, so the challenge is completely different but having said that, I am fully confident that these guys understand it and they will give it their best.” They have a great squad, great coaches and a great environment here. Speaking on the squad selection, White said: “I needed them to also play away because it would have been unfair to have a different squad travel to play just the one game. “It is a completely different test for these youngsters, a completely different test for us as a group. Both Janko Swanepoel and Chris Barend Smit come into the starting xv from the bench, with Swanepoel slotting in at 5 as Reinhardt Ludwig shifts to 4 in place of Jacques du Plessis. BBCo Director of Rugby, Jake White maintained consistency to personnel as he only makes four changes to the matchday 23 that triumphed over Lyon a week ago. He might show a bit of rustiness but we’re keen to see him back and see what kind of form he’s in. “We’ve had a look at Bordeaux’s game against Gloucester last weekend and it’s important that we scrum well against them because it’s an area we feel we can target” Powell explained. It’s important that we adapt from week to week and we’ve done that this week. “But we can only control what’s in our hands so it’s about how we emotionally and mentally approach this game.

The Bordeaux crowd booed, but Bosch was unfazed as he kicked his conversion. Bordeaux used that numerical advantage to boss the Sharks at a rolling maul, peeling off to score the opening try of the contest through Renato Giammarioli to take a 7-0 lead, but Bosch then knocked over a hugely impressive penalty from over 55m to narrow the gap and put his side on the board. Flyhalf Curwin Bosch was near-flawless with the boot, kicking 14 points - including one effort from over 55m - as the Sharks recovered from an early Werner Kok yellow card and a largely uninspiring first 40 minutes to get the job done.

He was fortunate it was not on the neck, or he would certainly have seen red. In that first half, it also looked like the Sharks had rediscovered their penchant for lining up deep to take the ball, which isn’t helpful to their attacking game. That did come, but perhaps later than expected given how often the French team was infringing. They continued to be in control in the first few minutes of the second half, but then came a slew of penalties against them as the Sharks began to take control with their power game and simply deny their opponents possession and opportunities. Bordeaux applied most of the early pressure and it wasn’t a huge surprise when they scored their first try in the seventh minute, with Renato Giammarioli showing impressive leg drive off the back of a lineout and completing a try that the Sharks will feel they should have stopped. The Sharks started sloppily but it was obvious from around the 20 minute mark that they were growing into the game as their forwards started to gain the ascendancy, and sure enough it was pretty much all the Sharks after halftime as they flicked the switch and suffocated the home team’s ambition by just denying them the ball.

The flyhalf further displayed his game-management acumen by popping over a sweetly-struck drop goal to make it 7-6 as Kok returned from the sin bin. Siya Kolisi and company flipped the game on its head in the second half, taking complete control with their power game and improved accuracy. They trailed 13-9 at halftime as a result, with Curwin Bosch’s boot keeping the Cell C Sharks in the hunt.

Kok is very much an old school Bok winger who goes looking for work and brings an immensely physical presence to the Sharks backline. For Kok however the incident was ugly, and the player knew it as he put his hands up to apologise. In both fixtures’ winger Werner Kok was one of the star performers as he crossed for a try in each fixture both of which came at rather crucial moments.
