Match preview: Argentina vie to stop France making it 2 in a row (Aljazeera.com)

Much more than a Messi vs Mbappe clash, the World Cup final will be a date with history for Argentina and France.

“Things always happen in a match for which you are not prepared,” said France captain Hugo Lloris, who is looking to become the first man to captain a team to the World Cup title twice. It’s a World Cup final after all, but our opponents are not in the stands.” But all five players will be available to head coach Didier Deschamps – one of only three men to have won the World Cup both as a player and a coach. “Already I had a great experience as a player, and now it’s my privilege to experience it as a coach. Leo [Messi] is doing well and let’s hope the match goes our way, but it’s a game between Argentina and France, and there are many players that can decide the game.” Mbappe, the prodigious talent who has scored only two fewer World Cup goals than Messi, but is aged just 23 and is poised to take the 35-year-old Argentinian’s mantle as the best player in the world.

World Cup final 2022 picks: Argentina vs. France has most experts ... (CBSSports.com)

One way or the other, it's the last hurrah for Messi come Sunday against France in the World Cup final.

Argentina's last win was in 1986 and this is the first World Cup after the death of Diego Armando Maradona. [I picked Argentina to win the World Cup before the tournament started](https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/2022-fifa-world-cup-predictions-picking-every-game-lionel-messi-leads-argentina-to-glory-usmnt-move-on/) and I will stick to my prediction despite the fact that I see France as a stronger side. The torch will be passed on to Mbappe -- if it has not already been done yet -- as the next in line to join the likes of Messi in the Mount Rushmore of soccer greats. Les Bleus to edge this and become just the third team in World Cup history to defend their crown. Les Bleus are in the midst of the type of dynastic run we expected to see from the likes of Spain back in the 2010s. With the exception of an insane last 10 minutes against the Netherlands, this team has been extremely difficult to break down. However, few people (myself included) backed the defending champions to be this good. This feels like a bit of a toss up and in such cases it is rarely a bad idea to back the team that has Lionel Messi. Argentina are the better defensive side and have been able to beat teams in different ways. Messi will do just a little bit more, scoring the winning goal in extra time as France's injuries finally catch up to them. With Argentina getting healthy at just the right time, bringing Paulo Dybala off the bench will help spark a late winner in the match. You could throw a blanket over these two teams, who have a fair few of the same quirks and qualities, most notably an aversion to possession and a defense that makes that a solid tactic.

But they will have to start at a stupidly young age, and keep going for a hell of a long time. And for the record, in that 2005-06 season Ronaldo played in 33 Premier League games (24 starts compared to 11 for Messi). This is not to say that no player will ever pass Messi as the greatest of all time. Well for the former you can certainly make an argument that his peak was as good as Messi’s peak, or even better. Messi’s record against English teams probably speaks for itself there and if you watched La Liga and the Premier League side by side you would probably conclude that the former is better defensively, not the latter. The real truth of the GOAT debate is that it is an entirely personal decison. But more so than anything it is the consistency. Conversely the argument for Messi is that there has never been a player with as much natural talent in his boots. It’s not just the amount of goals but the assists as well, the creativity that Ronaldo and Pele did not possess. Some comes down to age and the era you fell in love with football, and some can come down to the club and/or country you support. For Ronaldo the argument is two-fold. For Pele the argument is three World Cups, including being part of the second team to win back-to-back titles.

And Messi sets up more goals for Mbappe than the other way around. Mbappe and Messi have shared in 26 goals that one has set up for the other. “We know what Messi represents to the history of our sport,” insisted Hugo Lloris, the France captain. If one of them comfortably outperforms the other in the final, he could emerge as Player of the Tournament. But, still, Varane will vividly remember being nutmegged by Messi, still impish deep into his 30s, and being on the wrong end of a Messi hat-trick. Varane against Messi has featured excellent French tackles and shown off Varane's knack of keeping pace with the very best opponent.

Fifa World Cup final: a look at Lionel Messi's legacy and ... (The Indian Express)

As Argentina prepares for the biggest game of Messi's career, with the FIFA World Cup's final against France on Sunday night, here's a look at his legacy ...

Gvardiol seemingly had Messi covered, shepherding him to the edge of the box on the right-hand side. Thus, with the comparisons to Maradona have come the caveats and the cynics. He has easily been the best player in every game Argentina has featured in (even in their loss to Saudi Arabia). One of the defining features of great players is how they make fans get used to their brilliance. Fans want good players to be great and great players to be the best in the world. Like all legends, this one too leans in on exaggeration, but only when it comes to describing the rest of the team as incompetent. Ever since Messi kicked a football, he has been compared to Diego Maradona and touted as his second coming, the torch-bearer of his legacy. While the eras they played in are undoubtedly different, necessitating differing styles of play, in terms of raw skill and physical attributes Messi is undoubtedly Maradona’s footballing successor. And his left foot seemed to make the ball defy the laws of physics. For Messi, winning the World Cup will not just be a fairytale ending to a legendary career, in some ways it will be necessary to cement his legacy. Messi has had a terrific tournament so far, with performances that have willed his team to the finals. Lionel Messi will play the biggest game of his career tonight, as Argentina plays France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar.

World Cup 2022 final LIVE - Argentina vs France build-up and team ... (Mirror.co.uk)

It's finally here: Argentina face France in the World Cup final at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar as Lionel Messi takes on his Paris Saint-Germain teammate ...

That has not been the end of it, however, with speculation he could return after returning to fitness. “Okay guys, for a second time guys, in the World Cup final. [World Cup](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/world-cup-2022) has seen 63 games played over the past 28 days and it's all be building up to this: [Argentina](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/argentina-football-team) vs [France](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/france-football-team) in the final at the Lusail Stadium. "A final you know, it is not played it is won! “In the Copa América they said that the favorite was Brazil and now they can say it’s France. I wish you the best. Bidding to stop them is Didier Deschamps' hugely experienced French side, who triumphed four years ago against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup final in Russia. “I see Messi very well and that helps us a lot. The top four are very dangerous and have world-class defenders. We’ll try to play our game and hurt them," Martinez said. If we have a good defensive night, there are many chances.” We like that, we don’t feel inferior to anyone.

World Cup 2022: latest news and countdown to Argentina v France ... (The Guardian)

Join our writers for the latest team news, previews and colour in the buildup to the 2022 World Cup final at Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

I think there is a bigger story to come out of that once the competition is done and dusted. Argentina have been excellent since their opening match bashing by Saudi Arabia, while France have trudged through to the final two with some acceptable performances. Naturally, if Argentina do win and Messi scores the winner, and a commentator says “you could not write this”, then they should be sacked on the spot. So much so this way of thinking goes that, as a joke to hope somebody would lose, we say “ah, congratulations to the team for having won x tournament” in a way to jinx them. One interesting for France is the absence is Karim Benzema. Having lived in London for the last six years I find it interesting to compare this view with the classic irony of British humour with the “it’s coming home” chant. “Second, as evidenced in how I phrased the potential result above, is the superstition or “cábalas” we Argentinians use. Now it is (to) go step by step and continue at least until Nations League and then we will see.” Reuters So every person here talking about the match will never say something like “we’ll win it” or start celebrating beforehand. I do not know if I will play until the Euros in Germany. It did not take long for Gareth Southgate to stick with England. I need to go step by step,” Modric told beIN Sports.

Fernandez has caused numerous clubs to stand up and take notice with his energetic displays in the middle of the park and a move away from Benfica looks certain in the near future for the promising youngster. De Paul is a box-to-box midfielder and the 28-year-old is the only midfielder to have started every single game for Argentina in Qatar. The Sevilla left-back has impressed during the World Cup, playing a big role in Argentina getting to the semi-final stage. Giroud notoriously won the World Cup in 2018 without registering a single shot on target but was a mainstay for Deschamps team with his ability to link play and create space for his fellow forwards. The 25-year-old looks threatening every time the ball is played to his feet and has the ability to either beat his man down the wing or cut inside to change the angle of attack. Tchoameni scored a screamer against England from outside the box but his main contribution has been consistently putting in dominant displays in the middle of the park to give France a solid base to build their attacks. While he is yet to score at the tournament, Greizmann also has three assists to his name, the joint-highest in the World cup so far. It’s not uncommon to see Griezmann pop up deep inside his own half to put in a perfectly timed tackle to win back possession and then race forward to help link up the play with his immaculate technique. He showed up as Boca Juniors president who won 17 cups (tournaments),” Ava said. Argentina fought a brief war over the islands in 1982 and lost. The passion you see in Qatar reflects the passion you see for clubs at a local level.” The Qatar World Cup has delivered a rich feast of soccer for the past month, with shocks, great goals, incredible celebrations and record-breaking feats served up by the assembled cast.

Messi had caused alarm by clutching his hamstring last time out, but recovered to inspire his side to victory and concerns were allayed after the game. Though France won without regulars Rabiot and Upamecano, it will be a relief to see the pair back training since the Morocco match. Indeed, all three of those players did not feature in the semi-final win over Morocco, with Rabiot remaining at the team hotel due to his condition. On the one hand, the trophy does not matter. And when you have the ball, you need to give it to him as soon as possible so that he can create something.” It was June 1986 and they were playing West Germany in the final at the Azteca in Mexico City. Ibrahima Konate came in for Upamecano against Morocco and was one of France’s best players. They have great players who work for the team also. Kylian Mbappe was the star man. “Today starts another World Cup for Argentina,” Messi had said after admitting they were poor in the first half. And looking at the scenes in Argentina now, I think that is how the people will feel on Sunday if Argentina win our third World Cup. “For me, this is the most important thing about this Argentina team, and why they are in the final on Sunday.
