Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected as leader of ANC in South Africa (The Guardian)

Country's president wins second five-year term as party leader after campaign dogged by Farmgate scandal.

“South Africa has a lot of potential to reverse the downward spiral … But there is a risk of people giving up on a country that really just needs good leadership.” Ramaphosa has made some efforts to reform the ANC and purge corrupt networks that had become embedded over the decade before he took power. He was on the verge of resignation just weeks ago but has emerged stronger and more powerful. Under the South African political system, Ramaphosa will now lead the ANC into general elections in 2024. He needs to convert this victory into action in government.

His re-election bodes well for the struggling economy and financial markets as economic pundits warned in the build-up to the five-day elective conference that the economy risked collapsing if Ramaphosa were to lose the election to the radical economic transformation (RET) faction of the party. Prior to the announcement, the rand had firmed about 0.5% to the dollar. Once it was confirmed that Ramaphosa would indeed serve a second term as ANC president, the rand extended its gain to 1.8%, to R17.22/$. A clear gap has emerged for finance’s role in the transition to a low carbon economy

But opinion polls suggest that its vote has shrunk considerably because of widespread corruption in government, high unemployment and poor public services - including constant power cuts. But no leader from KwaZulu-Natal, the political heartland of Mr Zuma, was elected to any of the ANC's top seven posts, in the latest sign of his and the region's declining influence in the party. Mr Mashatile is now the front-runner to become South Africa's deputy president, and president in the event Mr Ramaphosa is forced out of power.

Two months later, the day after Zuma resigned on 14 February 2018, the National Assembly (NA) elected Ramaphosa as president of South Africa. As of August 2017, Ramaphosa had 100 Ankole breeding cows at his Ntaba Nyoni farm in Mpumalanga. When he retreated from active politics in 1997, Ramaphosa became a director of New Africa Investments Limited. He returned to politics in December 2012 at the ANC's 53rd National Conference and served as the deputy president of South Africa under President Jacob Zuma from 2014 to 2018. In this regard, he rose to prominence for his role as head of the ANC delegation that negotiated the end of apartheid with the government in November 1991. His credentials for the Struggle against apartheid can be traced to his activism in student politics at the University of the North, which is now the University of Limpopo.

Latest data puts Zweli Mkhize ahead of Cyril Ramaphosa in ANC ... (Independent Online)

Momentum has shifted and latest data suggests Mkhize is now ahead in the race with support from KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, ...

This is expected to split the president’s votes thereby making it for Mashatile. Although he did not visit Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Western Cape and North West, his lobbyists worked tirelessly which resulted in him getting a sizeable number of delegates to his favour. Perhaps the biggest surprise for Mkhize was when he won Free State which was reportedly behind the current president. Mkhize’s political advisers’ strategy of nominating Paul Mashatile, Mokonyane and Mzwandile all from Gauteng appeared to have worked well since latest figures show that about 50% delegates would vote for him. After his visit three weeks to the conference Mkhize came back with the guarantee of 162 votes out of 251 delegates. Mkhize’s first stop was in eKurhuleni in Gauteng where his running mates Nomvula Mokonyane, Mzwandile Masina and Phumulo Masuale officially clarified that they were going with him.

ANC conference: Mkhize rivals Ramaphosa in tight ANC party race (BBC News)

The South African president is in a tight race with former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize to lead party.

Mr Ramaphosa had faced calls to resign ahead of the conference over an alleged cover up of theft of a large sum of foreign currency that was hidden in a sofa at his private farm. The former health minister was forced to leave office last year after allegations emerged that a communications company linked to his family benefited from a contract at the height of the Covid pandemic. South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa is in a tight party leadership race against his former health minister - who he forced to resign amid corruption allegations.
