Podence tried to work in pockets of space around Costa but he couldn’t find much space between the Gillingham bodies. He missed the best chance of the first half with a free header that flew wide from six yards. Neves kept Wolves pushing forward and twice went close to opening the scoring in the first half. He won the penalty and teed up Ait-Nouri’s goal too. He got forward well and tested the Gillingham goalkeeper. Kilman played a couple of excellent, raking long balls over to the right flank. Ait-Nouri added the second goal in stoppage time after Jimenez and Hwang combined to tee him up. The ball dropped invitingly for Hwang Hee-chan eight yards out after Gillingham failed to clear the corner and the South Korean was pulled back as he swung his right boot at it. Ruben Neves fired a free-kick just wide and almost gave Wolves the lead on the stroke of half-time. Nelson Semedo tested Turner but the Gillingham goalkeeper got in the way of his low shot.
