The situation is compounded by loadshedding – particularly the sustained higher levels that we have experienced. The sooner we are alerted to any sewer overflows, not just at our beaches, but anywhere in the city, the sooner we are able to activate our incident management protocols and resolve the issue, thereby mitigating the impact. The City of Cape Town said priority pump stations are being fitted with permanent generators and maintenance staff are on standby with mobile generators to power smaller pumps but some spills and overflows are still expected with high levels of loadshedding despite the contingency measures. In addition to this, there are challenges in terms of inappropriate objects in the sewer network which block the flow, according to Acting Mayor, Alderman Eddie Andrews. However, the City is doing everything possible to mitigate the damage and address the spills timeously. These closures have drawn attention to how the frequent high levels of loadshedding impact the water and sanitation infrastructure in the city.

Closure of 3rd Cape Town beach sparks concerns (Independent Online)

An electrical failure at the Beta sewer pump station has been blamed as a result of continuous load-shedding, leading to the temporary closure of the beach.

In these instances, the public is advised to avoid contact with the water. Fish Hoek beach was closed on Sunday, due to a blocked sewer. “With higher, prolonged stages of load-shedding, sewer spills and overflows are to be expected, despite contingency measures. Last week we closed a section of the beach at Muizenberg, on December 12, and opened it again to the public on December 16. Acting mayor and environment mayco member, Eddie Andrews said: “When we need to close a beach due to water quality concerns, we install signage to inform the public, as was the case at Fish Hoek Beach when we closed it on December 18 and opened it the next day. The City has been taking water samples on daily for water quality testing, and announced the closure to the public of Bakoven beach on Thursday.

The City of Cape Town has announced its public swimming pools will be open daily during the festive peak, however, load shedding disruptions are expected.

“While we have a plan to deal with the challenges, its success rests heavily on the co-operation and understanding of our patrons. “As we swim, water needs to be circulated and filtered for removal of debris such as grass, leaves, hair, and other large particles. “Electricity is needed at a swimming pool to keep the plant room functional.
