King Charles expected to mention Harry and Meghan in his first ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Having studied his mother's attempts to unify Britain for 70 years, the King's first televised Christmas address comes in turbulent times.

While the theme has not been confirmed, it is likely that Charles will pay tribute to his mother, who died in September. In 1957, she embraced the new technology and spoke to the Commonwealth via television for the first time. In the program Harry claims the palace “lied” to protect his brother, Prince William, and accuses his father of saying “things that just simply weren’t true”. Averaging between seven and nine minutes, the speech was traditionally written by the Queen herself, with assistance from her husband, Prince Philip, and close aides. The royals and their extended families will gather at Sandringham this year when they will mark a return to the festive seasons of old; the first gathering at the Norfolk estate in three years and the first any of them will have known without the Queen at the helm. Royal commentators believe the King is likely to mention the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in his festive broadcast with the British press reporting that he had no desire to make any changes to his carefully considered message in the wake of their comments.

How to Watch King Charles III's First Christmas Speech (Newsweek)

Two versions of the British monarch's Christmas speech have historically been recorded for broadcast on Christmas Day; one for radio and one for television.

To date three monarchs have delivered Christmas broadcasts to the nation; King George V, who began the tradition in 1932; King George VI, who gave his first speech in 1937; and Queen Elizabeth II, who gave 69 speeches in total. In 1969 she made the decision to issue a printed statement instead of a recording, in response to the broadcast of a controversial fly-on-the-wall royal documentary that aired earlier that year. The monarch threatened to sue for breach of copyright and received a front page apology. Do you have a question about King Charles III, William and Kate, Meghan and Harry or their family that you would like our experienced royal correspondents to answer? Charles is expected to pay tribute to his mother in his first speech, following her death on September 8. There was no broadcast in 1936 as King Edward VIII, who inherited the throne from his father George V in January, abdicated on December 11. It will also be his second address to the nation since becoming king. Today is another landmark because television has made it possible for many of you to see me in your homes on Christmas Day. For viewers in the U.S. 2022 will mark Charles' first Christmas speech. Unlike today, the monarch had to deliver his speech live from a specially re-purposed room at Sandringham House which was transformed into a recording studio. The time 3:00 p.m.
