Ben Stokes urges rethink on global cricket calendar to protect quality (The Guardian)

England's Test cricket captain highlighted the pressure on standards across all formats by the current schedule, citing the recent ODI series in Australia.

The scheduling and everything like that I think just doesn’t get as much attention given to it as it should. “And I don’t think that’s the way for international cricket to go. Stokes retired from one-day internationals in the summer, saying it was “unsustainable” for him to play in all three formats.

Flintoff would have been compared to Botham and I got compared to Flintoff. “Test cricket has been spoken about in a way I don’t like. Some of the messages were very emotional to read.” “It is perceived that men shouldn’t be seen to show weakness, but I have never had an issue with expressing my feelings and opening up about It. But for me it is so important for the game. It is losing the attention of the fans with all the new formats and franchise competitions,” said England red-ball skipper Ben Stokes, while speaking with former England skipper Ian Botham on a BBC Radio 4’s program, Stokes talked about various pressing issues in cricket.

The South Africa T20 league, which starts from January is one of them, with many IPL stakeholders forming different teams, who'll take part in the tournament. England secured a resounding 3-0 victory over Pakistan in the recently-concluded Test series.

And now Stokes, [who also inspired his country to a T20 World Cup win in November](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/cricket/breaking-england-win-t20-world-28477950), has explained what inspired the turnaround. And he was coy on how long he envisaged being in charge, saying: "I don’t think you can put a time on that. “One thing that I think I've always been very mindful of, you know, is never expect anybody else to do something that I wouldn't,” he said. But for me it is so important for the game. "It is losing the attention of the fans with all the new formats and franchise competitions. I love playing Test cricket and felt we could do something different." The best 30 players in English cricket right now (Telegraph.co.uk)

England have hit some pretty big highs in 2022 but which players ended the year right at the peak?

This belligerent competitor saved his career with a hundred in Sydney before moving to the next level in the summer starting with a sensational hundred at Trent Bridge that proved something was stirring in English cricket. His leadership, astute tactical brain, clear-eyed strategy, intelligent man-management skills combined with a hint of menace, when added to the fact he can bat at any pace, bowl good pitch up swing or reel off 12 overs of bouncers and can field anywhere makes him one of the most influential English cricketers of all time. Will he keep his place for the Ashes with England fitting both Brook and Bairstow in the side? Bought into attacking lengths and fields, and exudes the enthusiasm of a 20-year-old than a 40-year-old. Started the year backing away and having his stumps detonated as the last Ashes wicket to fall. Dropped for the West Indies tour and worried he’d be the scapegoat for Ashes hammering. Stokes will use him sparingly this summer in short bursts to give Australia a taste of what it is like to be peppered. Played all Tests last summer and also embraced the fuller length and less protection in the field. Always clinging on to his place in the side despite a fine record. Has matured into a senior pro who is much better equipped to handle the pressures of Test cricket. Easy to forget he was the young player to emerge last summer. Promising Test debut although he looked exhausted by the end of his second game in Multan.

Mohammed Shami was ruled out of India's tour of Bangladesh with a shoulder injury. | Cricket.

“The whole Indian backups have been injured over a period of time for some strange reason. Ravindra Jadeja is also among those Indian players who are recovering from injuries while captain Rohit Sharma had missed out on the Bangladesh Test series due to an injury he picked up during the limited overs games. He has had an injury and he’s been injury-struck for some time,” said Karthik on Cricbuzz. Bumrah posted videos of himself bowling full tilt in the nets earlier this month, with the caption “Full throttle”, indicating that he has regained full fitness. However, there has been no update on Shami, who had replaced Bumrah in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup. While Shami was ruled out with a shoulder injury, Bumrah was recovering from a back injury that had seen him sit out the 2022 T20 World Cup as well.
