AUS vs SA: South Africa's batting woes continue in 2nd Test (The Indian Express)

Leading the three-match series one-nil, Australia reached 45-1 at stumps before a crowd of 64876.

Australia’s trophy for men’s test player of the year will be renamed the Shane Warne Men’s Test Player of the Year, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association announced on Monday. Warne reached the milestone of 700 wickets on his home ground in Melbourne in December 2006. Apart from cheering Green off the field, fans also paid tribute Monday to Test cricket’s second-leading wicket-taker Shane Warne, who died aged 52 in March 2022. Starc briefly left the field for treatment on a sore middle finger. Green struck twice in his next over, removing Jansen caught behind for 59 and Rabada bowled for four. Mitchell Starc removed Temba Bavuma caught behind for one off the next delivery to leave the tourists teetering at lunch.

“We sort of stuck to our game plans and unfortunately the bowling was able to undo us. “I think today is probably a bit harder to accept than the previous six innings. Jansen brought up a maiden test half-century in the 57th over after lofting Lyon down the ground for four. However, in the next over Erwee (18) was gone after nicking one to Usman Khawaja at slip off the bowling of Boland. Verreynne brought up his second 50 soon afterwards, taking the Proteas tally to 171 for five. Khaya Zondo (5) was gone soon after lunch, with Labuschagne taking a stunning catch off the bowling of Starc. The Australian bowlers cleaned up the final three wickets for just seven runs, dismissing South Africa for 189. In the 17th over Elgar was given a second lifeline as another caught and bowled chance went down – this time off the bowling of Nathan Lyon. I think that’s where we probably fell short in the previous partnerships, was just that initial period. Having dominated the first Test at the Gabba to take a 1-0 lead in the series, Australia named an unchanged starting 11. De Bruyn, meanwhile, got off to a good start, hitting two fine boundaries early on.
