Opposition Lowdown: Allan Russell's Norwich City (The Tilehurst End)

Reading's final game of 2022 sees the Royals travel to East Anglia to face Norwich City. Join us as we take a look at the opposition.

Having excelled in City’s youth team, he made his professional debut for the club in August 2019 and has gone on to make 59 appearances, scoring eight goals. Alan Russell and Steve Weaver (caretakers): Former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith was sacked as Canaries boss on Tuesday, following the side’s 2-1 loss to Luton Town, with Norwich only seeing three wins in their last 13 games. Their poor recent form led to the sacking of manager Dean Smith, with Norwich seeing three losses in their last four games.

Norwich City fans now living in fear as Steve Bruce tipped to fill ... (The Mag)

It's uncanny, every time you think surely nobody will employ Steve Bruce now, the next thing you hear is that he's got another job.

‘If this has any truth then the good times are well and truly over. [Newcastle United](https://www.themag.co.uk/2022/11/where-newcastle-united-would-be-now-if-owners-had-kept-faith-with-steve-bruce/), Steve Bruce was supposedly ideal because he was ‘one of us’…hmmm, I didn’t know a single NUFC fan who wanted him. Sacked (and yet another pay-off) in October 2018, Dean Smith then came in as replacement and despite the shambles he inherited from Bruce, got Villa promoted that very same season! I await with interest to see just who Norwich get and for the sake of their fans (and Isaac Hayden), I just hope it isn’t Steve Bruce. Now with Norwich the spin would be the fans supposedly welcoming home a former playing hero, [Bruce](https://www.themag.co.uk/2022/12/curious-tale-of-carlos-corberan-steve-bruce-and-eddie-howe-newcastle-united-west-brom/) playing for the Canaries 1984-1987, 35 years ago… The latest fanbase to be living in fear are the Norwich City supporters.

He is a good man and we maintain a great deal of affection for him. The Canaries are searching for a new boss after Smith, along with his coaches Craig Shakespeare and Liam Bramley, were relieved of their duties on Tuesday after the 2-1 Boxing Day defeat to Luton Town. Norwich City is one of the 'most prestigious' head coach jobs in the country, with applicants flocking to throw their hat in the ring to succeed Dean Smith, says Zoe Webber.

Norwich City vs Reading: Match Preview 2022/23 (The Tilehurst End)

Reading will be looking to secure their fourth win in five league games this evening as they make the trip to Norfolk to face managerless Norwich City.

Considering how difficult our upcoming games our with Norwich and West Brom both having strong squads, it was vital to get something from the Swansea game. The Swans’ defence has been a weak point for the South Wales outfit since his appointment and that might be one reason why the Norwich board decide to turn their back on their former defender. Russell Martin may be an obvious candidate considering his ties with the club - but it would take him a while to implement his style at Carrow Road and he hasn’t been that successful at Swansea either.

We have got to add quality to it and they have got to be our players. The ownership is a massive thing and then there’s the stadium, that’s a massive thing, so all those things will play into what happens financially to the club moving forward. We have got to have loan players as well but we have got to have players who are ours and that are assets. And we can’t just keep churning the assets, we have to be able to player trade down the line, but that’s further down the line.” Robins is excited by the prospect of the proposed takeover by Doug King which he hopes will give him the financial clout to add a bit of quality in the January transfer window, albeit insisting: “It’s going to be incremental. Over the last nearly six years now it’s been unbelievably tough but unbelievably rewarding in equal measure and continues to be so.

Norwich City 1-1 Reading: Andy Carroll penalty earns point for Royals (Sky Sports)

Report and free match highlights from the Sky Bet Championship clash between Norwich City and Reading at Carrow Road as Adam Idah's goal was cancelled out by Andy Carroll's penalty for the Royals on Friday night. Friday 30 December 2022 22:39, UK.

We have to put a lot of hard work in against two possession-based teams in the space of four days but they have stuck at it and got their reward." We aren't the team we want to be yet, far from it, but there is something special about this group of players. I thought the fans were excellent as well. Their player sold it well to the referee and I am gutted for the lads in there. They deserved a win - but unfortunately you don't always get what you deserve in this game. Norwich's interim head coach Allan Russell: "I am proud of every single one of the players in the dressing room now and they have lost a win by a poor decision.

Norwich City 1-1 Reading FC: Player Ratings (The Tilehurst End)

See how Ross rated the Royals for their efforts at Carrow Road and vote for your MOTM.

Good to see him back in the line-up, but he looked a little as though he hasn’t started since November 8. Unlucky not to score on the hour mark as he headed down well, but unfortunately straight at the keeper from a dangerous-looking corner. Carroll was used as the first point of attack, rather than the end goal, and proved effective. A little calmer in possession tonight than he looked earlier in the week, but still guilty of losing the ball outside of his own box multiple times when Norwich pressed high. A good night from Carroll who demonstrated how he can be used as part of a system, rather than as the inevitable end result. He was probably lucky not to have much to do in the first 45 after that, as he took a nasty boot to the back of the head. Performed well defensively in the first half but still seems lacking as a balanced left-wing-back. Interchanged nicely with Ince and Hoilett in the first half down the right-hand side and had some joy, getting crosses into the box for Carroll to knock down. Not bad for the man who’s meant to be providing defensive grit. Bravely got down to stop Teemu Pukki in his tracks when he was put through one-on-one in the first 20 minutes. His general solid self in the first half. All in all, a very solid outing from the loan keeper.

Reading FC covert late penalty to snatch point at Norwich City (Reading Chronicle)

Andy Carroll converted a late penalty to snatch a point from Carrow Road in a 1-1 draw against Norwich City.

Pressing hard for the winner, the Canaries just did not have enough to break Reading down, taking a very solid point back to Berkshire. The hosts pushed hard for a second, which would have all-but condemned the Royals to defeat, with Josh Sargent forcing Lumley into a huge save, but the introduction of Guinness-Walker proved an inspired one. Looking much more of a threat in the second half, it took less than 10 minutes for the Canaries to take the lead, but poor Royal defending played its part.

Paul Ince Highlights Reading FC's Determination In Norwich City Draw (The Tilehurst End)

The gaffer was reacting to a hard-fought point as Reading came from a goal down thanks to Andy Carroll's late penalty.

You look at all these things, but the referee is in a great spot and for me it is a foul.” “His training has been unreal and he’s always telling me he wants to be in the side and that’s what you want. “They’ve just lost their manager, which is a sad thing to see, so I said to the players that the crowd will be up for it and that there will be a response. At the moment, that’s not the case, and it gives me a decision to make every week. It’s a lot for anybody, especially the workload we are putting in, so for the same people to play is virtually impossible. “You’re thinking just stay in the game, and after that we were all over them, especially down the right-hand side. And he won the penalty for AC to put in the back of the net. It was a case of sustaining that into the second half. “We’re nowhere near the team we want to be. Lucas had one cleared off the line and Yakou had a chance and we got our goal. In training he is a player who is always saying he is ready to go. That was half the job done.

Should have had it in the 17th minute when he volleyed into the ground before balooning a header into the air. Will also be frustrated with his relatively tame effort when slipped in at an angle by Nunez in the second half. The talent is clearly there for the Chilean, but he must improve his concentration if he's to reach his high potential. 6 7
