What to know about the new weight loss drug tirzepatide. Will it be ... (NBC News)

An Eli Lilly drug, if approved for weight loss, is expected to become the best-selling drug of all time, but concerns are mounting about who can afford it.

[The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act](https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/1577), which would have allowed the federal government to expand Medicare Part D coverage to include anti-obesity medications. “Patients tell me that it appears to them as if insurance companies want to wait until they get so sick that they have more of a necessity for a medication,” she said. Lofton, of NYU Langone Health, said insurance coverage of anti-obesity drugs may not improve until more people in the medical field change how they view obesity. Patients usually aren’t reimbursed by their insurance plan for the money they’ve already spent on the drugs, she added. Holly Lofton, the director of the weight management program at NYU Langone Health, regularly prescribes the new drugs to her patients but many, she says, are denied coverage by their insurance. Most [ patients in the trial](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35658024/) had a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. [ phase 3 clinical trial](https://investor.lilly.com/news-releases/news-release-details/lillys-tirzepatide-delivered-225-weight-loss-adults-obesity-or) found a high dose of tirzepatide helped patients lose 22.5% of their body weight on average, or about 52 pounds, better than any medication currently on the market. If the FDA confirms the drug’s effectiveness, a “fair” price for tirzepatide could be around $13,000 annually, or around $1,100 a month, said Dr. The drugs have been shown in clinical trials to be highly effective for weight loss. What’s more, Butsch said, not everyone responds the same way to any given weight loss drug. Experts are confident that the drug, called tirzepatide, will be granted approval by the Food and Drug Administration sometime next year. Kelly Smith, a spokesperson for Eli Lilly, declined to comment on what tirzepatide will cost.

We are at a time of year when booze-induced dread peaks. So I quit ... (The Guardian)

Facing fear and uncertainty without reaching for liquid courage unlocked a new level of confidence in my life.

In that feeling of relief itself (wine won’t cure my husband of disease) and also in undermining my ability to navigate the turmoil that was 2021 while being fully present. But while I knew that reaching for a glass of wine would give the impression of immediate “relief”, I also knew the feeling it promised was deceitful. Not being able to be with my husband while he was in hospital for surgery led to a level of fear I had never known before, that had manifested even as physical pain. Alcohol seems to fit this need with the immediate impact of increasing the body’s production of serotonin and dopamine, the “happy” hormones. I thought the first days of sobriety would be my hardest. I quickly learnt that having a “drink” (soda water with lemon) in hand was enough to stifle unwanted curiosity and avoid empty-hand anxiety.

F.O.C.U.S. Time: Broken, but still of value (Rome Sentinel)

My little fingers were marvelously stuck together before I even began to place together the chards of glass. Sitting on the floor with glued fingers, broken ...

There is my toy box was a coloring book and a Tupperware container filled with broken crayons. Dwelling on the broken situation too long may lead to a host of emotional and mental ailments such as depression, discouragement and lack of motivation, to name a few. There was a bit of chuckling between them while watching me struggle with my sticky fingers (Why did I not just use the duct tape?). On my journey of personal growth, I have been diligent not to allow a broken situation to dictate my future. Sitting on the floor with glued fingers, broken glass around me as well as a broken spirit, I waited patiently for my parents to arrive and tell them the tale. Our mind will wonder back to the broken situation and may even be triggered by current events. As expected, my parents were not at all thrilled to see the once lovely vase in pieces. Self-care will be your best ally when it comes to dealing with a broken situation. My first reaction was to grab duct tape and do my best to tape it together, as I have seen my father do so many times with much of our furniture. For the longest time I felt as though the word “broken” denotes having no hope of repair. This may take the form of working on your hobbies, journaling, talking to a trusted friend, exercising and meditation. My mom loves her keepsakes and mementos reminding her of wonderful times of old.

And on immortal hits like “Heat Wave,” “Dancing in the Street,” and “Nowhere to Run,” Reeves did it — sang pop hits with deep soul, or made soul records that popped like corn — as well as anyone. Dion had the swagger of a teen Sinatra (“Runaround Sue”), but he also had the heart of a premature old soul (“Abraham, Martin and John”). His happy burble on “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite,” from the latter, and his steely keen on the former’s closer, “Me in Honey,” tell the story as well as the hits do. An instrument of power, precision, and staggering range, it was the central feature of her debut album, Some Hearts, and hits like “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Before He Cheats,” and “Wasted.” Fifteen years and numerous hits later, she’s still singing like she’s got something to prove — 2022’s Denim & Rhinestones has a more aggressive rock edge than some of her past work and boasts some of her most demanding vocal work yet. “A certain reverence for the past, and a steady determination to take her place in the long story she was telling.” —A.M. Nobody can top Morrissey when it comes to flamboyantly melancholy ballads, in the grandeur of “I Know It’s Over,” “Now My Heart Is Full,” or his signature song, “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.” —R.S. 2013’s “Vivir Mi Vida” — a tropical reinvention of a hit by Algerian star Khaled — found him at the top of his game, while the rugged title track of his 2022 album, Pa’llá Voy, confirms him as one of the most distinctive and expressive vocalists in the Afro-Caribbean spectrum. Throughout her prolific discography, she pushes hard in both directions, as on 2014’s “Brooklyn Baby,” when she plays a coquettish character with her tone of feigned innocence, or 2021’s “White Dress,” on which she reveals all the scratches and imperfections of her airy head voice. Brazil's Lula sworn in as president for third time (Euronews)

Lula's predecessor Jair Bolsonaro is believed to have flown in a Brazilian military jet to Florida at the end of December.

He has also said he will bring illegal deforestation of the Amazon to a halt. Lula and his supporters have maintained he was railroaded. They chanted Lula's name and belted out the lyrics of a song that informs outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro it is time for him to leave. Lula has made it his mission to heal the divided nation. But a few hours before reports of his departure, he addressed the country as president on his social media. For months, Bolsonaro had sown doubts about the reliability of Brazil’s electronic vote and his loyal supporters were loath to accept the loss.

Brazil's third-time president Lula has new economic problems (Aljazeera.com)

Unlike Lula's first two terms in office, the current economic outlook is gloomy with high inflation and interest rates.

He is also facing growing pressure to de-carbonise Brazil’s growth model and to reassert greater government control over Petrobras, the state-backed energy company. In the latter, PL and its right-wing allies secured 19 of the 27 seats up for grabs. “Lula is arguably the most talented politician of his generation and if anyone can heal the country’s fissures it’s him. In the first-round elections on October 2, the far-right strengthened its hold on the country’s national Congress. He may also try to raise the minimum wage, but that would cost him politically.” PT has also highlighted the need to simplify Brazil’s labyrinthine tax system. The price of Brazil’s key exports (soybeans, oil and iron ore) are all expected to edge down next year. With other resource-rich countries in the region, Brazil’s economy soared. Compared with Lula’s first two terms in office, from 2003-2010, the current economic outlook is gloomy. Some analysts expect Lula to retain parts of Bolsonaro’s policy proposals, such as unifying regional sales duties into one national value-added tax. The tally was close, with Lula clinching victory by just 1.8 percentage points. He was also able to lure moderates by picking a centrist running mate, Geraldo Alckmin.

He called his imprisonment a political witch-hunt, fabricated by the right to keep him from running in 2018. It was there he planned the failed presidential campaign of Haddad, a regular visitor who lost to Bolsonaro in 2018. Lula became a widower when his first wife Mariza died the year before he went to jail. Lula's new-found social awareness was ignited by reading books on race, slavery and hunger behind bars, as well as biographies of Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela, according to his website. The more ideological Lula who emerged from jail in 2019 should not be a cause for concern, friends and allies said. "He went to prison strong and came out stronger."

He has also said he will bring illegal deforestation of the Amazon to a halt. Bolsonaro finally condemned the bomb plot in a December 30 farewell address on social media, hours before flying to the US. Pavão stressed that Bolsonaro, who mostly vanished from the political scene since he lost his reelection bid, was slow to disavow recent incidents. “I wish I were here when Bolsonaro’s plane took off, that is the only thing that makes me almost as happy as tomorrow’s event,” Coutinho, 28, said after singing Lula campaign jingles on the plane. Lula has made it his mission to heal the divided nation. For months, Bolsonaro had sown doubts about the reliability of Brazil’s electronic vote and his loyal supporters were loath to accept the loss. And with tensions running hot, a series of events has prompted fear that violence could erupt on inauguration day. The next day, police found explosive devices and several bulletproof vests in a forested area on the federal district’s outskirts. Party officials were jailed, including Lula — until his convictions were annulled on procedural grounds. He left office with a personal approval rating of 83 per cent. She decided to attend after seeing pictures of Lula’s first inauguration. Many Brazilians travelled abroad for the first time.

"The mandate we received, in the face of opponents inspired by fascism, will be defended through our democratic constitution. "Today marks the return of a working man to the presidential palace, someone who fights for social causes, for minorities, against racism and homophobia, a person who represents Brazil," he said. "I have so much admiration for his humility, his commitment to ensuring the people live in dignity," added Pinto, part of a crowd cheering for Lula outside the hotel where the new president spent the night. We will respond to hate with love, to lies with the truth, to terrorism and violence with the law." Giving a blistering overview of the past four years under Bolsonaro -- who snubbed the ceremony, in a break with tradition -- Lula said his government would work to undo a legacy of economic decline, funding cuts in health, education and science, and the "stupidity" of plundering the nation's resources for private gain. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office Sunday for a third term as Brazil's president, vowing to fight for the poor and the environment and "rebuild the country" after far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro's divisive administration.

Crowds of people are gathering in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, ahead of the inauguration of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as president.

The man said he hoped to "sow chaos" ahead of Lula's inauguration. Police attempted to remove the demonstrators on Thursday, but withdrew after they reacted violently. She will be expected to achieve Lula's pledge to reach "zero deforestation" in the Amazon by 2030. "Battles are lost, but we will not lose the war." They travelled to see their leader sworn in - but also for a celebration. And other supporters of the outgoing leader have remained camped outside army headquarters, where they have been urging the army to launch a coup.

Haddad has made it clear that Brazil needs to lead a policy of South American integration, with the possibility that Brazil will create a new continent-wide digital currency (the sur) that will anchor this integration. Lula will face a Chamber of Deputies and a Senate that are in the grip of the right wing. This is not a new phenomenon, although the Centrão (centre), the opportunistic bloc in parliament that has run things, will now have to work alongside far-right members of Mr. Lula will travel soon to China and the U.S. He has made it clear that he understands that the hunger epidemic is not merely about lack of income, as hunger demonstrates the reassertion of wretched old inequalities and the mistreatment of people of African descent and of indigenous communities. Fully Equipped mailbag: 8 reasons why it's time to invest in new ... (Golf.com)

In this Fully Equipped mailbag, we look at some of the latest equipment changes to expect if you haven't bought new clubs in a while.

If your clubs are still in good shape, and you still like how they perform in your hands—don’t feel compelled to jump to something new on a whim. Finally, if you’re buying gear just because you feel it’s time and you don’t want to miss out on the latest new technology, then we don’t blame you. But even still, you have to know the line and speed in the first place if you want to make anything. Whether you want to hit the ball high, or low, with spin or without, there’s a golf ball formula out there somewhere that’s right for you in virtually every price category. Because if you find a putter that feels good and looks good, you’ll be much more likely to putt better than you will simply copying your favorite player and using the same one he/she uses. It also comes with sharp UltiZip Grooves for more spin and a hollow cavity with a Gelback insert in the cavity for even more forgiveness and for an improved feel. But what we don’t advise you do is replace your driver, irons, or any other club in the bag because you feel as though you have to. The latest in new putter innovations still work to help make it easier to align your putts and also to minimize distance and direction loss on off-center putts. But even if you’ve slowed down a little, today’s innovations in variable face technology, carbon composite, adjustable weighting, aerodynamics—even the latest in artificial intelligence and new shaft technologies ought to be enough for you to tack on at least 5 to 10 more yards off the tee. Like we recommend with clubs, getting fit for the right ball is a must-do for the new year and especially when you get new sticks. But, if you’ve been playing clubs that are four or five years old (and older), then trust us when we say you’re in for a real treat come time to try the latest stuff. It’s been a few years since the distance-wood fad took center stage.

Book Review of Thinking Time: The Uses of History for Decision ... (smallwarsjournal)

One of the most spirited and lasting discussions among historians pits practitioners against their methods over the utility of the discipline in explaining ...

In conclusion, Thinking in Time proves remarkably valuable in helping readers develop a clearer understanding between the use and misuse of historical tools as well as the relative strengths of case-study methodology to inform policymakers and their staff. To do this, they trace the council’s evolution from standard practice to the eventual departure from standard practice in the treatment of analogies. [[15]](#_edn15) When extracting lessons learned from unique historical incidents, the authors stress various tools to differentiate variables between the past and present, ultimately considering issues as part of a time sequence. He extols the wellspring of readings, examples, and history from which the authors draw, spanning Thucydides to the dubious admonitions of McGeorge Bundy. [[5]](#_edn5) The book concludes with the placement of individuals and organizations to ascertain how different leaders and organizations relate to issues and each other, placing their history on larger timelines to draw trends and convergence. [[6]](#_edn6) Orienting these lessons toward the ambit of policy makers and their staff, the book seeks to provide examples of when these actors used, or misused, historical analogies to shape their decisions. [[3]](#_edn3) It is, in essence, a proposal for the sensible systematization of decision-making by means of comparison and scrutiny. The topic and methods employed in this book are fitting given the background of the authors, both noted scholars and advisors. There, he authored Alliance Politics and The Swine Flu Affair, both referenced in this book when relating the Skybolt incident and the swine flu scare of 1976. This review evaluates Thinking in Time: The Uses of History for Decision Makers by concentrating on the following areas: a primer on the authors’ background and their intended audience; the book’s general content; a brief overview of two previous reviews of the work that comment on its contributions and limitations; the main strengths of their arguments; and a set of concluding observations on the book’s general quality. Rosnau’s The Scientific Study of Foreign Policy and Paul Gordon Lauren’s Diplomacy: New Approaches in History, Theory, and Practice sought to illustrate the nexus of diplomatic history and international relations. Of equal salience, other scholars reoriented this case-study approach in a manner that sidestepped what historian Marc Bloch would call the “badly understood positivism” of abstraction by stressing the importance of historical continuity in any analysis and making these more accessible to those standing to benefit most from it.

Cut the ties with your smartphone and form healthy habits in 2023 with iOS' Screen Time and Android's Digital Wellbeing.

You can always re-add or reinstall them, but you may find yourself surprised at just how frequently you check on them in the day to day. Sometimes you can lower your screen time just by removing notifications from a particularly chatty app, or changing the notifications to be less prevalent and visible. You may even want to try charging your phone away from your bed, meaning you’re less tempted to grab it at night and scroll through social media. Speaking of Focus modes, Apple has been improving its implementation for a couple of years and offers a series of pre-existing offerings which can be customized, as well as the ability to create entirely new ones. In fact, with some easy steps, you can rely less on your device than ever before – and Apple and Google offer the tools to help. Starting to form new smartphone habits isn’t just something that happens instantly, so be prepared to spend some time getting used to the tools available, whether you're on iOS or Android.

Time crystals could potentially improve well-established technologies like atomic clocks, magnetometers, and even the gyroscopes used in mobile phones to determine their orientation. How such structures come to be is unclear and the new research challenges many of the expectations and ideas put forward over the last two years. So even if your pulses are imperfect, the time crystal will oscillate with a clockwork tick. The team had grown crystals for a different experiment but was curious to see if they could observe the expected DTC signal in them. This discovery complicates the theory behind time crystals, as researchers have generally believed that these objects require a certain "internal disorder" to be able to act as time crystals. Now, they have found a new one, in a regular crystal that can be easily made at home in one of those grow-your-own-crystal toys.
