The Sharks back-up brigade produced a stirring last quarter of the match to eventually go down fighting 24-12 in the URC against Connacht.
The Sharks finally got a deserved second try in the 79th minute as they attacked into the Connacht 22m, getting right onto the line, where replacement prop Dian Bleuler picked up and drove over for an unconverted try making it 24-12. The Sharks then finally managed to respond in the 61st minute as they attacked from a couple of tap and go’s in the Connacht 22m, with inside centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg receiving the ball and pumping the legs through tackle attempts and over, with replacement back Lionel Cronje nailing the conversion. Six minutes later the Sharks thought they had reduced the deficit to 10 points after hooker Kerron van Vuuren charged down a kick and then got the ball back to go over in the corner. Connacht was now in the ascendancy and they continued pressuring the Sharks over the rest of the half, but it took until the halftime whistle for them to go over again. [Connacht](https://www.connachtrugby.ie/) opened the scoring from a lineout deep in the Sharks 22m, with them setting up the maul and rumbling over for flank Conor Oliver to dot down, while flyhalf Jack Carty hit the post with the conversion to leave the score 5-0. Connacht scored a bonus-point win over Sharks in the Sportsground in their URC clash. Here's how it looked from where we were sitting.
Easily the South Africans' best passage of play of the match. Farrell later palmed the ball right at the try-line, perhaps that was a knock-on... O'Halloran, after a great run, flipped the ball to his left to Hansen. Carty touches down, but was there a forward pass in the build up? Poor kick from Wright though, Connacht back on the ball. Possibly their first such spell in the game. "Smarten up, lads" is the general gist! Good position for the home side. Carty with an excellent kick right into the corner from a penalty. Mchunu, Mbatha, Sadie, Bholi, Hugo, J Venter, H Venter, Gumede. Hopefully that starts tonight." -

And then they wrapped up the bonus point when Forde charged down a clearance from Nevaldo Fluers to score in the right corner after 56 minutes. The Sharks finally tried to play some rugby before the break but Connacht hit them on the counter and after going to the left corner again with a penalty, they worked it into midfield and full-back Tiernan O’Halloran came through to score under the posts. But Connacht finally got to grips with the conditions and hit the front after 20 minutes when they went to the left corner with a penalty and flanker Conor Oliver drove over.
The Cell C Sharks will be tackling Connacht in Galway in their Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash on Saturday night with a vastly different team to the ...
The Sharks stay in the UK after the London match to play Edinburgh in the URC, and they are likely to have all hands on deck for a game that will be the last played by the full strength team before the Boks take their break. Joey Mongalo is understood to be the man in charge of the Sharks team that will tackle Connacht, which makes sense as the promising young coach was recently appointed to head up the Sharks’ Currie Cup challenge. The Sharks’ journey to Galway would have been similarly drawn out.
