Following a 39-29 win for Harlequins over the Sharks in their Champions Cup fixture, here's our five takeaways from the match at the Twickenham Stoop.
And, they will also be concerned about the lack of variety and penetration that they got from their 9/10/12 combinations, something that might improve when the injured Rohan Janse van Rensburg returns. The only concerns they might have is their penalty count under extreme pressure and maintaining a level of width in defence, two areas that let them down a little today. For all of Quins’ brilliance in the backline, without pace of ball from set-piece and breakdown they have no platform from which to launch their big guns. The Harlequins backline is a joyous thing, but their seemingly chaotic way is based upon an ability to support their carriers and to react in the transition from defence to attack. Eben Etzebeth slid up side and once it was clear that Marler was no longer part of the ruck, he asked the referee for permission, who replied, correctly, that it was out. It was an outstanding game of rugby and one where both sides played a significant part in the day’s entertainment.

But the try was disallowed for an infringement in the build-up. The Sharks would either mount a comeback or capitulate. Former Sharks lock Stephan Lewies broke from a 10m lineout and scored against the team where he learnt his rugby. 'Quins’ incisive passing in midfield bamboozled the Sharks defence, which they scrambled to create delicious openings. Aphelele Fassi chipped through after joining the line from fullback, and Thaakir Abrahams gathered and fed Lukhanyo Am on his inside, who had nothing but London land in front of him. This is what the Champions Cup promised South African and European audiences.

However, the Sharks showed no sign of giving up as they scored two more tries through Hendrikse and Etzebeth as they trailed by two just points at halftime. This game was a clash of styles if ever there was one.

That was enough to prompt Harlequins to go for posts from a penalty for the first time in the 30th minute. It was a sign of respect for the Sharks that they felt they needed to get some daylight back on the scoreboard. Smith then added a penalty to make it 39-22. Bosch’s excellent conversion from the touchline made it a six point game. And even the currently fourth-placed Exeter Chiefs can pip them if it goes right for them in their final game. That point that might become crucial to deciding who plays where in the round of 16. Smith’s conversion put Harlequins into a lead they were never to relinquish. The hosts were getting the ball back from the recycles twice as quickly as the Sharks in the first half, and it compromised a Sharks defensive system that was way too passive. Smith’s conversion made it 21-8 and suddenly in a game where the Sharks had been up early it looked like they were already out of it after 18 minutes as they struggled to contain the speed and precision of the Quins’ attacking game. The simple fact of the matter for the Sharks was that their discipline was off, and they also failed to slow down the Harlequins ruck ball. But if that suggested it was going to the Sharks’ day in their quest for the win that would have enabled them to finish in the top two in Pool A, it was to prove a mirage. One of the big let-downs for the Sharks on the day was their discipline, and Quins set up an attack from the kick-off after the try by taking a quick tap from an offside penalty.

Tries continued to come thick and fast as Lewies went over from a line-out drive and following a spell of end to end play David ran in his side’s fifth with a solo try made possible by his vision and speed.
Nick David scored the standout try as Harlequins claimed a much-needed 39-29 victory against Sharks.
Harlequins reestablished some breathing space when Lewies splashed over in the corner from the back of a driving maul before David produced the score of the match with a fine finish from inside his own half. The Springboks lock stole in to seize the loose ball from under Care’s nose at the bottom of a ruck and scamper clear. Care had the first after Harlequins had gone through multiple phases with the Sharks’ defence floundering. “We’ve all been really desperate to play in good conditions and score ties and [Nick has] orchestrated a pretty good gameplan that, when it’s executed, looks spectacular, so we wish him well,” said the Harlequins coach, Tabai Matson. Harlequins’ quest got off to a bad start when Lukhanyo Am finished off the kind of stylish try that suggested it could be a long afternoon for the home side. He will be joined by Marcus Smith, who impressed in his second match since injury to offer a glimpse of how England’s attack may function against Scotland next month.
