Where is the Lunar New Year celebrated? Why is Vietnam celebrating the Year of the Cat instead of the rabbit?

Each year in the calendar is given a name using a combination of 12 earthly branches — each of which corresponds to an animal in the zodiac — and 10 heavenly stems.” The earthly branch for this year is called Mao, which is similar to “cat” in Vietnamese. In others, it’s the rabbit. In Vietnam, however, revelers are gearing up to celebrate the cat. The Year of the Cat is entrenched in lore, none of which has been proven, so we go with what our elders say. Along with red envelopes of lucky money, Vietnamese people prepare for the festival with peach blossoms and/or kumquats. Celebrating Chinese New Year abroad: Tales from a Malaysian (Study International News)

How do you celebrate Chinese New Year when you are miles away from your family? Hear it from Nathan Hew, a law graduate from Queen's University Belfast.

Surprisingly, my Chinese improved and I grew to appreciate my identity as a Malaysian Chinese. Moreover, I was mingling with many of them for the first time in a foreign country. Alright, that’s the end of my story. After all, I was the first person to study law in my family. It was also interesting to see the different dishes they would whip in the kitchen during this festive period. Let’s not forget the Chinese New Year songs. Unlike my brother, I am an introvert — so I liked being aline. Nothing beats savouring a bowl of hot soup during winter. Back home, Chinese New Year was a time of reunion. Looking back, however, I’ve grown to appreciate their interest in my life. Yes, homesickness hit hard — and the cold made it feel worse. Tilapia (“fei zhou you”), Hainanese Chicken, and Yam Cakes were some of my favourites.

Melody, like so many others, is unimpressed: "We have had free Covid tests and free vaccines for the past three years. That's what Zowie Li, who grew up in Wuhan, missed the most about not being able to make it home during the pandemic for the last three reunions. Even as large swathes of China turn festive red - the colour of the Spring Festival - it's hard to miss the white, the sign of a household in mourning. And then there are those who are celebrating, but with a heavy heart, well aware of the empty seats. We just can't give her the truth," Melody says. That visit happened just before the pandemic was declared - and China's zero-Covid policy in the years since, which required travellers to quarantine for weeks, kept her away from home. It has been promised as "a year of hope," with the cottontail creature symbolizing peace, longevity and prosperity in Chinese culture.

On Saturday night, a gunman opened fire at party-goers at Star Dance Studio in Monterey Park, California, killing 10 and wounding at least 10 more.

At a Sunday morning press conference, Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna relayed to reporters, “Somebody called one of those hospitals [treating the 10 individuals injured in the shooting] to say something along the lines that they ‘want to go and finish the job.’” In total, there were 647 mass shootings in the United States in 2022, according to records kept by the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an event in which four or more people, not including the shooter, are either shot or killed. Police are investigating a possible connection between the Monterey Park shooting and an incident that same night in the neighboring city of Alhambra. According to reports, 17 minutes after the Monterey Park shooting, an individual, described as an armed Asian male, walked into the Lai Lai dance hall in Alhambra, whereupon he was disarmed by the dance hall patrons and thereafter fled from the scene in a white cargo van similar to the van found in Torrance. After a massive police manhunt, a white van matching descriptions provided by witnesses was breached by a police SWAT team Sunday afternoon in the coastal Los Angeles-area city of Torrance. Those in attendance were celebrating Lunar New Year’s Eve at the studio in a Los Angeles area suburb with a majority of residents of either Chinese or Asian descent.

5 things to know about Lunar New Year and the Year of the Rabbit (Saanich News)

Why is it the Year of the Rabbit? The Year of the Tiger has now come to a close as the lunar calendar moves on to its fourth year in the Chinese zodiac cycle — ...

Lion dances are a form of traditional dance in China and other Asian countries — often performed at Lunar New Year celebrations — in which performers in a lion costume mimic the animal’s movements. Many celebrate the first day of the Lunar New Year at home with family, but parades and other public celebrations are popular options this year. Another popular Lunar New Year tradition is when parents, married couples and older family members hand out red envelopes containing crisp money and treats to unmarried youth and younger children. Those born in the Year of the Rabbit — including 2023, 2011, 1999, 1987 and every 12-year cycle before that — are associated with qualities like calm, empathy, patience and ingenuity. Each year is named after one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac in a repeating cycle. The Chinese zodiac is made up of 12 animals, starting with the rat and running through the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Chinese New Year: why is this the year of the rabbit and what does it ... (AS English)

The beginning of 2023 sees the Chinese zodiac symbol of the rabbit leap forward. So what does it mean, and how does it fit?

It’s a time to forget old grudges and forgive mistakes, and to start the new year with a clean slate. The Chinese zodiac is also used to predict people’s fate and how compatible they are with others. In 2023, the 22 January sees the rabbit welcomed in, and what a positive creature it is. The rabbit has long been associated with our Moon and is said to live in harmony with nature. OK, so the first thing to note is that there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac meaning that the rabbit, which comes fourth on the list, takes its place every dozen years. Did you know it was the fourth animal in the Chinese zodiac?

And you always celebrate the Chinese New Year. What I didn’t do was give the house a full cleaning prior to the start of the New Year and make sure everyone had a fresh haircut. It might sound over-the-top, but dumplings are important to the celebration and symbolize wealth in the new year. We have thrown larger Chinese New Year parties in the past, and I love bringing family and friends together for a big animal-themed bash. I pulled into the driveway and saw how wonderful the house looked and was just filled with gratitude for my husband. The bunny’s body is Funfetti inside, and the base is chocolate with chocolate frosting.

What China's Lunar New Year Treks Mean for Covid Surge: QuickTake (The Washington Post)

For the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began, people in China can travel freely for Lunar New Year, the country's most important holiday.

The Lunar New Year has traditionally been a peak season for outbound travel as well, but the flow of Chinese tourists — previously a $280 billion spending force in hotspots from Paris to Tokyo — will take months if not years to recover to pre-pandemic levels. Now that the country has abruptly dropped the Covid-Zero strategy and started reopening its borders, economists broadly expect consumption to rebound robustly later this year after infections peak, helped by a low comparison base but also as pent-up demand is unleashed and economic activity picks up. While normally considered a tame and tender animal, this year’s commemorative stamp issued by China Post has stirred up controversy, with some people saying the rabbit looks crazed or worse. Domestic leisure travel is first in line to get a boost, as people recovering from a bout of Covid are looking to ski down snow-capped mountains in northern China and bathe in the sunshine down south in Hainan, known as China’s Hawaii, and shop at the island’s duty-free stores. It also pledged to redirect more medical supplies to rural areas and urged people to get vaccinated. Also known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, it marks the beginning of the Chinese lunar calendar, and is seen as celebrating values like unity and family ties. Hong Kong set a daily quota of 60,000 people to travel to the mainland, which was then raised for land crossings. Many migrant workers seize what’s often their only chance in the year to return home, and many of the country’s urban elites also make their way back to small towns and villages. Transport authorities are adding more flights and transport options to ferry not just people but also medical supplies, grains and fuel to handle expected higher demand ahead. This year is expected to see not only people swarming out of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, but also the Chinese diaspora rushing in from near and far. The question now is how much of an impact the massive migration will have on the outbreak — as well as the already fragile economy. Traditionally, the celebrations span 16 days, from a family feast on New Year’s Eve through the Lantern Festival on Day 15.

News: Watford FC Celebrate Lunar New Year (Watford FC)

Everyone at Watford FC is delighted to be celebrating the Lunar New Year. As part of our celebrations, we invited Hornets' supporters group to share details ...

For a number of years, the Watford Chinese Association, in partnership with the Watford Palace Theatre, have hosted the Chinese New Year Culture Show. By 2013, with an increasing number of elderly members, it became apparent that there was a need to develop a centre for social activities for the older members and other elderly folks from the local and neighbouring community who are interested in Chinese culture and tradition. In 1998, headed by Mrs Hutchinson, the Watford Chinese (Sunday) School was founded to teach the Chinese language. The Watford Chinese Association was initially established in 1996 with the support of Watford Borough Council. This is beautifully highlighted by The Frank Soo Foundation Communities Youth Football project in partnership with the Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust. With initiatives like the 'We Campaign' and this Lunar New Year celebration, everyone at ESEA Hornets has been made to feel so welcome at Vicarage Road and we hope this encourages even more people from our communities to become Watford supporters. Widely known as the Spring Festival, the Chinese Lunar New Year is an important festival that marks the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season. Watford FC has always had links with East and South East Asia, with its tours to China in 1983, and Thailand in 1985. In December 2013, when China successfully landed a spacecraft carrying a robotic rover on the surface of the moon, they named the lunar rover Jade Rabbit. For over 2,000 years, the Chinese zodiac has played an integral role in Chinese culture. Some of you may also know Lunar New Year as Chinese New Year, but the festivity is commonly celebrated across various ESEA communities. All at Watford FC are delighted to be celebrating the Lunar New Year.
