Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will face off in a heated Copa del Rey quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday night.
The former duo will also be tasked with holding the fort out wide in case the Atletico back four have to go narrow. The Dutchman will bring in a semblance of dynamism to an Atletico side that has looked largely toothless this season. However, a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu is no mean feat, let alone for the Madrid derby. Diego Simeone will welcome back the defensive duo of Stefan Savic and Sergio Reguilon, who have both served their suspensions in the previous round. Ancelotti is expected to deck out his side in a 4-3-3 formation, with Thibaut Courtois in between the sticks. The last time the two teams faced off in the competition was in the Last 16 in the 2014/15 season. Antonio Rudiger is expected to partner with the fit-again Alaba at the heart of the defence. Diego Simeone’s side are enjoying a season to forget, and a successful cup run could be the impetus they need to turn things around. The Copa del Rey does not have priority status, unlike Atletico Madrid, whose best shot at silverware this season lies in the competition. In fact, neither club have made the final since their respective wins, and there is no better time than now to break that hoodoo. Games between the capital sides have proven to be close-fought affairs with plenty of drama, and more can be expected this time around. However, it has now been ten years since a side from the Spanish capital laid claim to the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid: Mourinho's 'last supper' and the Copa del Rey final that signalled Los Colchoneros' return as a force · Overcoming history and ...
But that's arguably only the case because of the successes that have come since for Atletico. In typical Atletico fashion, Simeone's side did everything they could during the early exchanges to get the faces of Madrid. Ronaldo's dismissal for kicking out towards Gabi's face made things a little easier once the subsequent touchline brawl settled. "When we talk about the chances that Real Madrid or we have in the final, they are better than us, without a doubt." For Madrid, the gravity of the occasion couldn't be much more different. Raul Albiol let Diego Costa and then Falcao know he was there. That Copa triumph was monumental in the moment, but breaking the duopoly of Madrid and Barca in LaLiga – 12 months later and again in 2021 – will be the legacy of Simeone once his chapter as coach ends. But then Madrid started to return the favour. It was so much more than a win, though. Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia dubbed it "Mourinho's last supper". The Madrid coach was quintessential Mourinho in the aftermath, simultaneously declaring it the worst season of his career while also noting that "for many coaches that would be a good year". The Copa del Rey showpiece wasn't technically his last game in charge, but it was his last final with Madrid and a match that many Atletico fans will consider to be up their with their most historic wins.
Real Madrid will go head-to-head with Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals on Thursday (January 26) at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Spanish centre-back carries a goal threat of his own as he has scored in this campaign already. Monitoring his movement on the flank is a tough task, as he can use his pace and skill to take on and dribble past his opponents. Monitoring his movements is a tough task as he can drop deep into the midfield to facilitate attacks. Benzema has netted 12 goals and registered one assist in 18 appearances for Los Blancos this season. However, the Argentine's defensive intuition is outstanding and it will be interesting to see if he can silence Vinicius in their encounter. [Los Blancos](https://www.sportskeeda.com/team/real-madrid-cf) this season and his attacking intuition has been a major part of their play in the final third.
The Madrid derby will take place this Thursday with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
It will be a very tense game as always between the two sides, but Real Madrid are still the favorites to win and get it done. Both of them will be out of contract at the end of the current season. Also, there was a limited number of tickets available for the guests in what is the most anticipated showdown so far in the cup.
Los Blancos are expected to go with the clean-sheet defence from San Mamés as they look to seal passage to the semi-finals.
Some players with the qualities to change the game will be waiting on the bench, if necessary. On the far left and through the middle there will be no surprise: Vinicius and Benzema, respectively. In the offensive phase, it will be one more attacker; and in defence, the Uruguayan will line up with the midfielders and help Nacho on the right side. Militao and Rudiger will occupy the central positions again and the left side will be for Mendy. The third midfield position will likely be filled by either Modric or Kroos, the Croatian being the most likely. In defence, without Carvajal or Lucas, the right-back will once again be Nacho, currently the best-fit defender at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid will be without Eden Hazard, Daniel Carvajal, Lucas Vasquez and Aurelien Tchouameni. They put in a clinical show against Real Valladolid last weekend to emerge 3-0 winners with both strikers, Morata and Griezmann, finding the net. Los Blancos sealed their place in the quarter-finals courtesy of a thrilling comeback against Villarreal from two goals down to win 3-2. Atletico, meanwhile, will be vying for revenge for their loss earlier this season in La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti's troops have struggled to keep clean sheets this season but their performance against Athletic Club over the weekend, when they shut out the Basque team, will boost their confidence before taking on the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata. Hence, this tournament remains their only realistic hope of getting silverware.

Real Madrid vs. In fact, Atletico have put up a whopping 9.1 xG in their four La Liga matches out of the World Cup break. Offensively, Real Madrid have quite possibly the most talent of anyone in the world and they’ve shown that this season, averaging 1.81 npxG per 90 minutes in La Liga. Diego Simeone’s side is averaging 1.53 npxG per 90 minutes, which is third in La Liga behind only Barcelona and Real Madrid. Real Madrid are sixth in La Liga in expected goals allowed (xGA) and 11th in passes allowed into the penalty area. They are currently in the bottom half of La Liga in passes allowed into the penalty area, crosses completed into their penalty area and xG allowed per set piece. Atletico also have conceded 21 big scoring chances already on the season, which is only three less than they conceded over the entirety of last season. They are not providing much resistance in terms of their counterpressing or in transition defense. Diego Simeone’s side is out of the Champions League and is now fighting to stay in the top four in La Liga. The problems that exist at Real Madrid are quite simple. They got revenge against Villarreal and then beat a very good Bilbao team over the weekend, but things are not fixed. Carlo Ancelotti’s team is in the middle of a very difficult run of matches.

Plenty of ball early on to Los Blancos, but Atletico do pick it up in the middle and look to feed Morata on the edge of the box, but the pass is cut out well. Benzema does really well to hold it up on the edge of the Atletico box, before laying it back to Valverde, who sends it out to the right, but the resulting cross is poor and the red-and-white shirts are back to clear. Half-time in this Madrid derby, and there's a hint of a flare up on the pitch, but Koke does well to nip it in the bud and get his players off the pitch. It's a poor one, though, and Atletico have a chance to get a few touches on the ball themselves. Nacho receives the ball on the right and looks to send a piledriver of a cross towards the back post, but it takes a flick off Valverde. The Brazilian did brilliantly to get a toe on the ball and knock it past him, but he was checked in his stride to concede a decent set-piece. Real look to build another attack, but the ball is held up in the middle of the park and the referee blows his whistle. Modric pops it on to Valverde on the overlap and the Uruguayan sends a brilliant cross in towards Benzema, but the Frenchman can't get his feet right and misses the ball completely. This time it's Asensio with the shot as the hosts look to box in the visitors, but it's tame from the Spaniard and Oblak can claim to take a few more seconds out the game. Atletico have their first and so far only attack of the extra time but it's a tame ball in across goal from Molina and Courtois is quickly on it to launch another Real attack. The Belgian has the beating of Nacho, but his crossing has let him down, and Real have a chance to break down the left. It's brilliant work down the right to send the ball in from the byline, and it trickles through the bodies to Vinicius Jr, but the Brazilian can't set his feet properly, and it falls to Benzema.
With a place in the semifinals at stake, we've got the Madrid derby and given recent controversy involving Atleti ultras and Vinicius, it's going to be hot.
There is a definite intensity in this match and the pace of play is high. Madrid are attempting to tighten their grip, but for the moment it's a case of nothing doing. In a play that looked very similar to the one that gave them a goal, a lobbed pass was played over the defense - to the left this time - where Lemar instead of Nahuel was waiting. Madrid appear to have more purpose now and are not simply playing the ball left-to-right in front of a dogged defense. The Brazilian uses a deft piece of skill that leaves Nahuel reflecting on his life decisions, but it's to no avail, the ball is clear and Atleti break. Madrid work the ball to the left where Vincius Jr. The Dutchman gets off a shot but Cortois is able to palm it out for a corner. IT was a well-worked play, but there was an element of luck to it as the low cross across the box was inadvertently deflected by Vinicius' miskick, into the path of the waiting Benzema. Asensio gets in on the act, but his cross is blocked and Oblak will attempt to calm things down. Down the right they go and as luck would have it, they now have a corner. By now you've probably seen the ugly scenes that were witness prior to kickoff, with some of Atleti's fans hanging a caricature of the player from a bridge in the city. Sadly, what looked to be the makings of a historic win for the visitors, began to unravel in the second half.
