Proteas white-ball captain Temba Bavuma has heaped praise on Sisanda Magala for his role in the exhilarating comeback win over the world champions England.

I was first-change, it was what the situation needed. Having posted 298/7, England were seemingly cruising to victory after openers Jason Roy and Dawid Malan posted 146 for the first wicket in 19.2 overs. A bit two-paced, used the steepness. Bowl as straight as possible, hit the length, a few change-ups. “Temba was trying to suss out the situation. But that’s when Magala (3/46) intervened.

However South Africa’s aggression with the ball turned the match in their favour and they eventually ran out victors by 27 runs. Kagiso Rabada, indifferent with the new ball, returned and forced a misjudged pull out of Roy that Wayne Parnell did well to catch while running around the square leg boundary. The key wicket was that of Jos Buttler, who needed to bat until the end but didn’t with Nortje returning and finding the outside edge to end the England skipper’s innings on 36.

While so much of the focus leading into this three-match series has been on Jofra Archer, this game was turned by a very different fast bowler.

“It was always going to be a challenge to get back to bowling ten overs in a game,” Buttler said. Three balls later, Archer sent down a wide full toss that was slashed for four by Miller and, to the bowler’s displeasure, it was called a waist-height no-ball. The pitch drew the sting from most of his short balls, but Temba Bavuma was slightly late on one bouncer and was lucky that his edged hook flew over third man for six. Before the game, after his stint in the SA20 competition, Archer had estimated that he was operating at about 80 per cent of capacity. But he has a smooth, repeatable action, a strong wrist and no little skill, and when he forced Malan to splice a pull to mid-off to end the opening stand, he sparked a flurry of three wickets in as many overs. After Roy had pulled Kagiso Rabada to deep square leg, Jos Buttler made a steadying 36, but he tickled Nortje behind and England were six down, still needing 65 to win.
