The franchise and provincial competitions must be the best against the best. What a positive start for the coaching partnership of Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter. I remember so well, as a young kid of about nine years, overhearing my father, as president of the Western Province Cricket Association, having to explain to the Alma Club chair why it was important for the board to reduce the number of club teams in the 1st division. The political narrative should be to give everyone the opportunity to play the game from grassroots. The victories in the first and second ODIs made a statement. It was a long phone call and at the end Dad explained to me the importance of competing strength vs strength. Miller led the younger Jansen through the last phase of the victory talking to him, encouraging him and Jansen responded by showing us his wonderful all-round capability. He is tailor-made for the ODIs and Test cricket. One cannot underestimate the importance of this series win. Did you feel that seismic shift in the Protea strength as they professionally and systematically chased down a large 342 total in the second ODI against England? Miller’s ability to finish matches and his shepherding of Jansen was a masterclass in what it takes to build key partnerships at the end of an innings. The Proteas were blown away.

Whose data is it anyway? Behind the fight to control cricketers ... (The Guardian)

Cricket is heavy with statistics and the battle over fair usage and control of them is just beginning.

The focus for the early part of this year is to move that forward.” “Fundamentally, the debate comes back to, do the players own the data?” Hudson says. “It probably ran for the majority of 2020, just as a bubbling topic,” Hudson says. It formed part of their presentation to professional players before the start of the 2021 season and progress has continued slowly since. A megabucks lawsuit does remain a possibility: “We all get into asking what the potential value of this is for our members. It’s a topic that’s sat within our organisation for a number of years, but has felt it’s gathered pace in the last 12 months.” “We’re talking about any personal data – tracking and performance data is the classic, so in cricket it’s runs scored, how fast, where they score, all that stuff. “There’s lots of talk around litigation, but that’s not a strategy we’re really pursuing,” says Rich Hudson, the PCA’s head of cricket operations, who has led their work on the issue. It’s more than the value of lawsuits, it’s the ability to say: ‘That’s mine and I can say yes or no to people using it.’ That’s the fundamental principle.” Just as GDPR laws forced companies to seek customers’ permission before they could use their data – hence having to accept cookies when you land on a new website – the belief is that cricketers should be able to control who uses data about them. Last September, GSDT launched a lawsuit, which has now been joined by more than 1,400 professional footballers, over the use of their performance data by gaming and bookmaking companies, seeking an eyebrow-raising £500m in damages. Cricket lovers by their nature are probably more inclined than most to appreciate things that happen at a gentle pace, sporting encounters – and perhaps also stories – that unfold leisurely over an extended period rather than with great dramatic swoops and squalls.

Although we have made lots of progress in this area already, I can now feel the buzz of understanding in all the business stakeholders and the drive to create real change in so many people. Sustainability is something I am truly passionate about and to be able to focus on that area as a job is unbelievable – I am very lucky. Growing up, cricket was one of the only sports that existed in my house and at the age of about 7 my dad brought me to a cricket game at The Kia Oval. I remember being sat in the stands in front of the old click-a-clack scoreboard just being amazed at the game and the opportunity to spend time with my dad and his best friend. I started working at Surrey as a casual waitress during one summer as The Oval is about 10 minutes from where my parents used to live and I needed a job. Sustainability is so important, not just for the planet but the very survival of the human race and I find that exhilarating.

Cricket continues to wrestle with contentious issue of 'throwing' (Arab News)

There are certain elements of cricket that are considered to be unsavory or objectionable. One of them is throwing the ball instead of bowling it.

This was despite the availability of biomechanical testing, which showed that Muralitharan did not extend his arm any more than bowlers with actions that were considered to be legal. More than one bowler has been rumored to slip in the occasional “throw” in attempting to realize these opportunities. People on either side turned to ask the question — was it a throw? This is not the first time that a single umpire has taken the view that it is his responsibility to focus on a particular bowler’s action. After remedial work, Husnain was reassessed and cleared to return to play in June. His team has requested that the bowler’s action be biomedically tested. As a result, thresholds were drawn up for the allowable amount of elbow straightening — 10 degrees for fast bowlers, 7.5 for medium pacers and five degrees for spin bowlers. At the time, Neville Cardus, one of cricket’s great writers, objected to throwing because it looked ugly. The next battle centered on the legality of delivering the ball with the hand raised above the shoulder. This led to a new ruling, which stated that “the ball must be delivered underhand, not thrown or jerked, with the hand below the elbow at the time of delivering the ball.” In essence, the Law has remained the same for well over 100 years. There are certain elements of cricket that are considered to be unsavory or objectionable.

Former England captain warns that sport's culture has not evolved to meet modern obligations.

This may lead to some hard soul-searching, but in the name of the spirit of the game, it must be done." "As for the women's game, the rate of growth will just accelerate" he said. The future direction of the sport will be decided not in the meeting halls of the ICC in Dubai but rather by the purchasing power of the increasing number of those who choose to follow the game." "The events over the last 18 months, whether they come from Yorkshire or elsewhere, have shown we have a lot of work to do in this area, but the Spirit of Cricket demands this. From a players' point of view there will clearly need to be an awareness that the world is watching every move that they make in a way that was never the case previously, both on and off the pitch. "There are too many people involved, too many variables, too much disruption and chaos for anyone to be pulling all the strings.

This may lead to some hard soul-searching, but in the name of the spirit of the game, it must be done,” concluded Strauss. In addition, the best players, wherever they hail from, will have to weigh up their own personal aims and ambitions alongside their loyalty to their own countries and formative teams. “The events over the last 18 months, whether they come from Yorkshire or elsewhere, have shown we have a lot of work to do in this area, but the Spirit of Cricket demands this. “While in the past players might have been able to swallow the odd invisible pill, these days they are likely to be in short supply. The future direction of the sport will be decided not in the meeting halls of the ICC in Dubai but rather by the purchasing power of the increasing number of those who choose to follow the game,” concluded Strauss. He added that recent revelations about institutional racism in sport had proven that the game has not evolved enough to meet obligations of the modern world.

New Ireland stadium talks 'serious' says Deutrom (BBC Sport)

Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom believes the Irish government is ready to begin discussions on a new national cricket stadium.

"We sold out in about 24 or 48 hours. Those are numbers which other sports probably only dream about. "And what we are doing in a way is using our global visibility to try and drive the sense of being a major sport here." "The vision that we have needs to cleave very closely to Sport Ireland's and the government's own vision for infrastructure on the campus which is going to be 'world class'," he said. In November, Irish Minister of Sport Jack Chambers said the Sport Ireland Campus should be "the home of Irish sport" and Deutrom says Cricket Ireland's vision tallies with this. "The next cab off the rank for us was to ensure the degree of urgency that it was going to be developed as quickly as possible and the government's announcement around that over the weekend was obviously terrific because it means we can crack on seriously to look at the feasibility of this."
